Streptococcus gordonii septic arthritis of the glenohumeral joint following deltoid intramuscular vaccination.

A 68-year-old woman presented for left shoulder pain, decreased range of motion (ROM) and fever 7 days following COVID-19 vaccination. Investigations showed a tender left deltoid mass, decreased shoulder ROM and elevated inflammatory markers. MRI demonstrated a large glenohumeral effusion with synovitis, and arthrocentesis confirmed septic arthritis (SA). She required subtotal bursectomy. Intraoperative joint cultures grew Streptococcus gordonii She completed 6 weeks of antibiotics and is undergoing physical therapy for post-infectious adhesive capsulitis. SA is most commonly due to Staphyloco

Binding of Streptococcus gordonii to oral epithelial monolayers increases paracellular barrier function.

The junctional epithelium comprising the gingival attachment to the tooth acts as a barrier against pathogenic subgingival plaque microbes and their products. There is evidence that pathogenic Porphyromonas gingivalis has the potential to disrupt epithelial integrity, contributing to breakdown of the junctional epithelium characteristic of the immunopathological response of chronic periodontitis. The present study investigated the capacity of the oral commensal Streptococcus gordonii to increase epithelial barrier function to support epithelial integrity of healthy tissue. Oral epithelial barr

Streptococcus gordonii infectious endocarditis presenting as a neurocysticercosis mimic - A rare manifestation.

Infective endocarditis (IE) usually presents with nonspecific signs and symptoms, which delay diagnosis and proper treatment. Here, we describe a patient with initial clinical and radiological features compatible with neurocysticercosis who was later found to have IE. Furthermore, the patient course was complicated by multiple neurological complications (brain abscess, meningitis, infected intracranial aneurysm, subarachnoid hemorrhage and hemorrhage), and patient ultimately deceased. To our knowledge, an IE case mimicking neurocysticercosis and progressing with prominent and complicated neuro

Contribution of phosphoglucosamine mutase to determination of bacterial cell morphology in Streptococcus gordonii.

Phosphoglucosamine mutase (GlmM; EC 5.4.2.10) catalyzes the interconversion of glucosamine-6-phosphate to glucosamine-1-phosphate, an essential step in the biosynthetic pathway leading to the formation of the peptidoglycan precursor uridine 5'-diphospho-N-acetylglucosamine. We have recently identified the gene (glmM) encoding the enzyme of Streptococcus gordonii, an early colonizer on the human tooth and an important cause of infective endocarditis, and indicated that the glmM mutation in S. gordonii appears to influence bacterial cell growth, morphology, and sensitivity to penicillins. Promoter and transcription analysis of penicillin-binding protein genes in Streptococcus gordonii.

An optimally cross-linked peptidoglycan requires both transglycosylation and transpeptidation, provided by class A and class B penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Streptococcus gordonii possesses three class A PBPs (PBPs 1A, 1B, and 2A) and two class B PBPs (PBPs 2B and 2X) that are important for penicillin resistance. High-level resistance (MIC, > or =2 microg/ml) requires mutations in class B PBPs. However, although unmutated, class A PBPs are critical to facilitate resistance development (M. Haenni and P. Moreillon, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 50:4053-4061, 2006). Thus, their overexpressi

Infected left atrial myxoma with Streptococcus gordonii: case report and literature review.

Cardiac myxoma is a relatively common type of benign heart tumor, but infectious myxoma is rare. The symptoms of non-infected cardiac myxoma and infected cardiac myxoma are similar and mostly nonspecific, which can easily lead to delayed diagnosis, missed diagnosis, and delayed treatment. A 57-year-old male patient presented with nonspecific systemic symptoms such as anorexia, fever, and cough, and was initially considered to have gastrointestinal disease or pulmonary infection. Preoperative bacterial culture was negative, and imaging features were consistent with cardiac myxoma. A small amoun

Reverse Vaccinology Approach to Identify Novel and Immunogenic Targets against Streptococcus gordonii.

Streptococcus gordonii is a gram-positive, mutualistic bacterium found in the human body. It is found in the oral cavity, upper respiratory tract, and intestines, and presents a serious clinical problem because it can lead to opportunistic infections in individuals with weakened immune systems. Streptococci are the most prevalent inhabitants of oral microbial communities, and are typical oral commensals found in the human oral cavity. These streptococci, along with many other oral microbes, produce multispecies biofilms that can attach to salivary pellicle components and other oral bacteria vi

Peptide-modified nanoparticles inhibit formation of Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilms with Streptococcus gordonii.

PURPOSE: The interaction of Porphyromonas gingivalis with commensal streptococci promotes P. gingivalis colonization of the oral cavity. We previously showed that a synthetic peptide (BAR) derived from Streptococcus gordonii potently inhibited the formation of P. gingivalis/S. gordonii biofilms (IC50 =1.3 µM) and reduced P. gingivalis virulence in a mouse model of periodontitis. Thus, BAR represents a novel therapeutic to control periodontitis by limiting P. gingivalis colonization of the oral cavity. Here, we sought to develop drug-delivery vehicles for potential use in the oral cavity that c

Inhibition of Porphyromonas gingivalis adhesion to Streptococcus gordonii by human submandibular-sublingual saliva.

Porphyromonas gingivalis W50 adheres in vitro to biofilms of Streptococcus gordonii G9B. This phenomenon is believed to facilitate the initial colonization of the oral cavity by P. gingivalis and to contribute to the maturation of dental plaque. In this report, we describe the modulating effects of human submandibular-sublingual saliva (HSMSL) on this in vitro model of intergeneric bacterial adhesion (coaggregation). HSMSL inhibited P. gingivalis adhesion to S. gordonii by 50% at a concentration of 57 micrograms of protein per ml. Maximum inhibitory activity was associated with a 43-kDa protei

Levofloxacin-Resistant Streptococcus gordonii Infective Endocarditis in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report.

Infective endocarditis (IE) in older adults often presents with nonspecific or subtle clinical features, which may delay recognition, especially when antibiotics are initiated before appropriate diagnostic testing. Streptococcus gordonii is a common oral organism capable of causing IE. We describe a case of IE caused by levofloxacin-resistant S. gordonii in a woman in her 90s with poor oral hygiene. She developed persistent fever after receiving empirical levofloxacin for a presumed urinary tract infection. Although recent dental procedures were absent, blood cultures obtained prior to hospita

Streptococcus gordonii Supragingival Bacterium Oral Infection-Induced Periodontitis and Robust miRNA Expression Kinetics.

Streptococcus gordonii (S. gordonii, Sg) is one of the early colonizing, supragingival commensal bacterium normally associated with oral health in human dental plaque. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in the inflammation-mediated pathways and are involved in periodontal disease (PD) pathogenesis. PD is a polymicrobial dysbiotic immune-inflammatory disease initiated by microbes in the gingival sulcus/pockets. The objective of this study is to determine the global miRNA expression kinetics in S. gordonii DL1-infected C57BL/6J mice. All mice were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10

Streptococcus gordonii-associated infective endocarditis in a girl with Barlow's mitral valve disease.

We present a case of infective endocarditis caused by Streptococcus gordonii in an 11-year-old girl with Barlow's mitral valve disease. The differential diagnosis of rheumatic carditis and infective endocarditis was difficult as the patient fulfilled the Jones criteria. Vegetation on the mitral valve which became evident later in course of the disease and positive blood culture allowed diagnosing "definite" infective endocarditis.

BAR-encapsulated nanoparticles for the inhibition and disruption of Porphyromonas gingivalis-Streptococcus gordonii biofilms.

BACKGROUND: Porphyromonas gingivalis adherence to oral streptococci is a key point in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases (Honda in Cell Host Microbe 10:423-425, 2011). Previous work in our groups has shown that a region of the streptococcal antigen denoted BAR (SspB Adherence Region) inhibits P. gingivalis/S. gordonii interaction and biofilm formation both in vitro and in a mouse model of periodontitis (Daep et al. in Infect Immun 74:5756-5762, 2006; Daep et al. in Infect immun 76:3273-3280, 2008; Daep et al. in Infect Immun 79:67-74, 2011). Culture-Negative Endocarditis Complicated by Cerebral Abscesses Due to Streptococcus gordonii: A Diagnostic Odyssey.

Endocarditis is a serious diagnostic entity that carries a high rate of morbidity and mortality, with complications including heart failure, septic embolization, brain abscesses, and stroke. Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) represents a particularly challenging clinical scenario where the causative organism is undetectable, either due to being difficult to culture or due to the empiric administration of antimicrobial agents. This entity generally results in delayed diagnosis and treatment of endocarditis, with a potential increase in the rate of complications. In this report, we pres

Reactive arthritis and subacute infective endocarditis caused by Streptococcus gordonii infection: A case report.

Streptococcus gordonii (S. gordonii) belongs to the alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus group. It is a symbiotic bacterium found in the human oral mucosa which is present in large quantities on the surface of the teeth. It is generally considered nonpathogenic or weakly pathogenic and is known to cause subacute endocarditis; however, there are few reports of reactive arthritis (ReA) caused by S. gordonii. Herein, we report a case of ReA complicated by subacute infective endocarditis caused by S. gordonii and explore the possible pathogenic mechanism of ReA caused by S. gordonii.

A Challenge of COVID-19: Associated Infective Endocarditis with Streptococcus gordonii in a Young Immunocompetent Patient.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a new challenge for the diagnosis and treatment of infective endocarditis (IE). Fever and other unspecific symptoms of coronaviral infection could be misleading or masking its manifestations. We present the case of a young patient admitted for persistent fever, profuse sweating, headache, articular pain, myalgias, and weight loss. She reported regression taste and smell disorders compared to a month earlier when diagnosed with moderate COVID-19 pneumonia. While the RT-PCR SARS-COV-2 test was positive, she was admitted to a COVID-19 ward. Investigations of febrile syndr
