A Case of Recurrent Erysipelas Caused by Streptococcus mitis Group.

The aetiology of erysipelas remains poorly defined though beta-haemolytic streptococci are considered as the main causative pathogens. We describe a case of a 70-year-old woman with recurrent erysipelas in her left arm due to infection with streptococci of the mitis group. Her past medical history includes lymphoedema of the left arm secondary to lymph node dissection due to breast cancer surgery. On seven different occasions during a decade, she has presented a clinical picture of erysipelas and in three of them with Streptococcus mitis group bacteraemia. The results indicate that two cases w

Septic arthritis of the pubic symphysis caused by Streptococcus mitis.

Septic arthritis of the pubic symphisis is distinguished from osteitis pubis by positive cultures. The symptoms, physical examination and laboratory findings of these two conditions are comparable. We present a case of 57-year-old woman with septic arthritis of pubic symphisis caused by Streptococcus mitis, a commensal oral flora that belongs to viridans group streptococci, which normally reside in the oral cavity, the gastrointestinal and the urogenital tract.

Pediatric Infective Endocarditis Due to Streptococcus mitis: A Case Report.

Infective endocarditis in pediatrics is a rare but serious condition, even in immunocompetent children without congenital heart disease. Streptococcus mitis, a commensal inhabitant of the oral cavity, has emerged as a relevant etiological agent capable of causing invasive infections due to its strong endothelial adherence and biofilm formation. Accurate microbiological identification requires advanced tools such as matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, given its genetic similarity to Streptococcus pneumoniae. This case report presents a 12-ye

Lung abscess due to Streptococcus mitis: case report and review.

Streptococcus mitis is a bacterium traditionally regarded as a normal commensal of the oropharynx, skin, and intestinal and genital tracts. To our knowledge, we describe the first case of bilateral lung abscesses caused by S. mitis in an immunocompetent host. The abscesses were successfully treated with clindamycin and gentamicin. Our case illustrates that S. mitis should be considered a cause of pulmonary abscesses.

Streptococcus mitis septicemia in leukemia patients; clinical features and outcome.

The frequency of streptococcal infections has been reported to be increasing. To determine the significance of such infections complicating treatment of leukemia, we studied the incidence and clinical features of Streptococcus mitis septicemia among 51 leukemia patients in our department. During 166 consecutive treatment courses for leukemia, eight episodes of Streptococcus mitis septicemia were observed in 35 septicemic patients. In seven out of eight episodes (88%), severe mucositis developed after aggressive chemotherapy, suggesting that oral mucosa might be the site of entry for Streptococ

[2 newborn infants with septicemia caused by multiresistant Streptococcus mitis].

Multiresistant viridans streptococci had not yet been encountered in the Netherlands. In the spring of 1990 we isolated multiresistant S. mitis from blood of two Dutch neonates (minimal inhibitory concentration of penicillin 64 mg/l). In both patients septicaemia developed while they were being treated with beta-lactam antibiotics. Although viridans streptococci usually are extremely sensitive to penicillin and other beta-lactams, the possibility of development of (multi-)resistance in these microorganisms during antibiotic treatment should be kept in mind.

Glenohumeral Joint Sepsis Caused by Streptococcus mitis: A Case Report.

Septic arthritis of the shoulder girdle remains relatively uncommon, with Staphylococcus aureus and β-hemolytic streptococci the typical offending organisms in adult patients. Rare cases of Streptococcus viridans, an oral bacterium with low virulence, have been reported in the setting of septic arthritis, mostly involving the knee joint or the sternoclavicular joint. In this article, we report a case of Streptococcus mitis infection of the glenohumeral joint that likely resulted from hematogenous spread after oral trauma in a patient with poor underlying dentition. Inhibition of pneumococcal growth and biofilm formation by human isolates of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis.

UNLABELLED: In a world facing the unprecedented threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, targeted approaches to control colonization and prevent disease caused by common pathobionts offer a promising solution. Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a leading cause of infections worldwide, affecting both children and adults despite available antimicrobials and vaccines. Colonization, which occurs in the form of a biofilm in the upper respiratory tract, is frequent and a prerequisite for disease and transmission. The use of live bacterial strains as biotherapeutics for infectious diseases is

Streptococcus dentisani sp. nov., a novel member of the mitis group.

Genomic, taxonomic and biochemical studies were performed on two strains of α-haemolytic streptococci that showed them to be clustered with major members of the Streptococcus mitis group. These Gram-stain-positive strains were isolated from tooth surfaces of caries-free humans and showed the classical spherical shape of streptococcal species growing in chains. Sequence analysis from concatenated 16S and 23S rRNA gene and sodA genes showed that these strains belonged to the mitis group, but both of them clustered into a new phylogenetic branch. The genomes of these two isolates were sequenced,

Septicemia due to Streptococcus mitis in neutropenic patients with acute leukemia.

Eight neutropenic patients with acute lymphocytic or nonlymphocytic leukemia had septicemia due to different strains of Streptococcus mitis (St. mitis), a microorganism not commonly recognized as a special pathogen in leukemic patients. Four of the patients had been treated with high-dose cytosine arabinoside as part of the cytostatic regimen, six had a central venous line and four patients had oral lesions prior to the infection. Selective gut decontamination consisted of co-trimoxazole/colistin in five patients and quinolones in three patients. The first three patients died, either due to in

Determination of 16S rRNA sequences of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus gordonii and phylogenetic relationships among members of the genus Streptococcus.

We determined the 16S rRNA sequences of the type strains of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus gordonii and calculated the phylogenetic distances between those organisms and other members of the genus Streptococcus. The viridans group streptococci were separated into five phylogenetic groups; we named these groups the anginosus group, the mitis group, the salivarius group, the bovis group, and the mutans group. S. mitis and S. gordonii clustered in the mitis group together with Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguis, and Streptococcus parasanguis at levels of

Relationships among streptococci from the mitis group, misidentified as Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The aim of our study was to investigate phenotypic and genotypic features of streptococci misidentified (misID) as Streptococcus pneumoniae, obtained over 20 years from hospital patients in Poland. Sixty-three isolates demonstrating microbiological features typical for pneumococci (optochin susceptibility and/or bile solubility) were investigated by phenotypic tests, lytA and 16S rRNA gene polymorphism and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). All isolates had a 6-bp deletion in the lytA 3' terminus, characteristic for Mitis streptococc and all but two isolates lacked the pneumococcal signature cytos

Apparent failure of endocarditis prophylaxis caused by penicillin-resistant Streptococcus mitis.

Antibiotic resistance among viridans streptococci has increased with Streptococcus mitis being more resistant than other viridans species. In a case presented in this report, it is possible that antibiotic resistance contributed to an apparent failure of endocarditis prophylaxis. The patient had undergone periodontal surgery on 2 separate occasions and in both instances was administered 2 g of amoxicillin orally 1 hour before each procedure. He subsequently developed a subacute illness and had multiple blood cultures drawn that grew S. mitis with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 1.0 micro

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Streptococcus mitis caused by accidental human bite.

Human bite wounds are more prone to infection than animal bites, which may cause necrotizing soft tissue infections such as myositis, fasciitis. Both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms may be responsible, including Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Peptostreptococcus spp. Necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by serious tissue destruction and systemic toxicity with high morbidity and mortality. We report a patient with Streptococcus mitis associated necrotizing fasciitis on the upper extremity resulting from an accidental human bite, which caused nearly fatal infection. Prophylacti

Major outbreak of toxic shock-like syndrome caused by Streptococcus mitis.

Severe illness caused by viridans streptococci rarely occurs in immunocompetent hosts. Between December 1990 and May 1991, thousands of patients in the YangZi River Delta area of Jiangsu Province, China, suffered from scarlet fever-like pharyngitis. Fewer cases occurred in subsequent years with the same seasonality. Approximately half of the cases developed complications characteristic of streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome (TSLS). Throat cultures yielded predominant growth of alpha-hemolytic streptococci. All cases admitted to Haian People's Hospital were investigated. Clinical specimens

Streptococcus infantis, Streptococcus mitis, and Streptococcus oralis Strains With Highly Similar cps5 Loci and Antigenic Relatedness to Serotype 5 Pneumococci.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a highly impactful bacterial pathogen on a global scale. The principal pneumococcal virulence factor and target of effective vaccines is its polysaccharide capsule, of which there are many structurally distinct forms. Here, we describe four distinct strains of three Mitis group commensal species (Streptococcus infantis, Streptococcus mitis, and Streptococcus oralis) recovered from upper respiratory tract specimens from adults in Kenya and the United States that were PCR-positive for the pneumococcal serotype 5 specific gene, wzy5. For each of the four strains, the 1

Structure-Activity Analysis of the Competence Stimulating Peptide-1 in Streptococcus mitis.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are one of the greatest challenges in modern medicine, as multidrug-resistant strains continue to outpace traditional antibiotic development. Unlike conventional antibiotics that promote resistance through selective pressure, quorum sensing-targeted therapies disrupt bacterial communication systems that regulate, among other traits, virulence, biofilm formation, and resistance acquirement through competence without directly killing the bacteria. In this study we examined quorum sensing modulation in Streptococcus mitis, a commensal oral bacterium that has recently

IgA Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance and Complication of Streptococcus mitis Bacteremia.

This case presents a patient with bacteremia of an unusual organism with a history of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). MGUS is typically thought to be asymptomatic until potential progression of the disease. This case reports a patient with a history of MGUS who does not show disease progression, however, may be showing symptoms, such as immunodeficiency. This case displays bacteremia with Streptococcus mitis within a two-week period of an invasive procedure. Recent studies parallel this case by showing MGUS patients may have two times the risk of infections compared
