Pathogenic effects of Streptococcus oralis intestinal colonization on bladder health in mice.

Streptococcus oralis, a commensal oral Streptococcus, is known as an early colonizer of the tooth surface and causes opportunistic infections, such as bacterial endocarditis. However, its pathogenicity remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the pathogenicity of S. oralis in vivo using a mouse model. To establish S. oralis-colonized mice, germ-free mice were orally infected with S. oralis. After colonization was confirmed, these infected mice were bred, and their offspring were used as S. oralis-colonized mice. S. oralis was detected only in the intestine of these mice, which exhibite

Does Streptococcus oralis supernatant influence on the proliferation and virulence of Candida albicans?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of Streptococcus oralis supernatant on the proliferation and virulence of Candida albicans. DESIGN: S. oralis supernatant was obtained by filtration of overnight cultures. Single or dual-species cultures of C. albicans and S. oralis were cultivated in both planktonic and biofilm-based models. Planktonic culture growth was measured, and mature biofilms formed on resin disks were collected to measure biofilm metabolic activity, total biomass, and cell counts. Hyphae formation (virulence factor) and biofilm thickness were analyzed by confocal laser scanning m

Rare Postoperative Pelvic Lymphocyst Infection by Streptococcus mitis/oralis: A Case Study.

Lymphatic cyst with infection is caused by interruption of lymphatic vessels during para-aortic lymphnode dissection in patients with gynecological malignancies. It is generally considered that the infection is caused by bacteria invading through the lower limb and perineal wound, but the pathogenic factors of most lymphatic cysts are not clear. Our literature search revealed no previously reported cases similar to ours, in which a lymphatic cyst infection resulted from a co-infection with Streptococcus mitis/oralis (S. mitis/oralis) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae). A woman of 61 yea

Neonatal conjunctivitis due to uncommon pathogen Streptococcus mitis/oralis: a case report.

Neonatal conjunctivitis (NC), historically attributed to Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is now known to be caused by various pathogens, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Chlamydia trachomatis. Although viridans group streptococci are generally regarded as commensal organisms, they may cause opportunistic conjunctival infections. Here, we present a case of NC caused by Streptococcus mitis/oralis, a member of the Mitis group of viridans group streptococci. A 15-day-old female neonate presented with bilateral severe eyelid edema and moderate hemopurulent discharge that precluded anterior segme

Understanding Lactobacillus paracasei and Streptococcus oralis Biofilm Interactions through Agent-Based Modeling.

As common commensals residing on mucosal tissues, Lactobacillus species are known to promote health, while some Streptococcus species act to enhance the pathogenicity of other organisms in those environments. In this study, we used a combination of in vitro imaging of live biofilms and computational modeling to explore biofilm interactions between Streptococcus oralis, an accessory pathogen in oral candidiasis, and Lactobacillus paracasei, an organism with known probiotic properties. A computational agent-based model was created where the two species interact only by competing for space, oxyge

Streptococcus infantis, Streptococcus mitis, and Streptococcus oralis Strains With Highly Similar cps5 Loci and Antigenic Relatedness to Serotype 5 Pneumococci.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a highly impactful bacterial pathogen on a global scale. The principal pneumococcal virulence factor and target of effective vaccines is its polysaccharide capsule, of which there are many structurally distinct forms. Here, we describe four distinct strains of three Mitis group commensal species (Streptococcus infantis, Streptococcus mitis, and Streptococcus oralis) recovered from upper respiratory tract specimens from adults in Kenya and the United States that were PCR-positive for the pneumococcal serotype 5 specific gene, wzy5. For each of the four strains, the 1

Genomic identification and characterization of Streptococcus oralis group that causes intraamniotic infection.

BACKGROUND: Intraamniotic infection is a cause of spontaneous preterm labor. Streptococcus mitis is a common pathogen identified in intraamniotic infection, with the possible route of hematogenous dissemination from the oral cavity or migration from the vaginal canal. However, there are a few reports on Streptococcus oralis, a member of the S. mitis group, as a cause of pathogen in intraamniotic infection. We reported herein whole genome sequencing and comparative genomic analysis of S. oralis strain RAOG5826 that causes intraamniotic infection. RESULTS: Streptococcus mitis was initially iden

Effect of acidic pH on expression of surface-associated proteins of Streptococcus oralis.

Streptococcus oralis, a member of the mitis group of oral streptococci, is implicated in the pathogenesis of infective endocarditis and is the predominant aciduric non-mutans-group streptococcus in dental plaque. We undertook to identify the most abundant surface-associated proteins of S. oralis and to investigate changes in protein expression when the organism was grown under acidic culture conditions. Surface-associated proteins were extracted from cells grown in batch culture, separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, excised, digested with trypsin, and analyzed by matrix-assisted l

Bmal1 Regulates Coagulation Factor Biosynthesis in Mouse Liver in Streptococcus oralis Infection.

Streptococcus oralis (S. oralis) has been recognized as a fatal pathogen to cause multiorgan failure by contributing to the formation of microthrombus. Coagulation and fibrinolysis systems have been found under the control of circadian clock genes. This study aimed to explore the correlation between BMAL1 and coagulation factor biosynthesis in S. oralis infection. Mice were administered S. oralis to induce sepsis, and HepG2 cells were also infected by S. oralis. The expression of BMAL1 of hepatocytes was downregulated in the S. oralis infection group, leading to the downregulation of coagulati

Low penicillin susceptibility in Streptococcus mitis/oralis from bloodstream infections in pediatric populations.

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus mitis/oralis can cause invasive diseases, including bloodstream infections. However, existing research primarily focuses on specific populations, and limited studies have been conducted on the prevalence of bloodstream infection caused by S. mitis/oralis across the entire pediatric population. Therefore, clinical data of S. mitis/oralis isolated from blood samples at Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, during the period 2019-2023 were collected retrospectively to provide a comprehensive understanding of the clinical characteristics and drug re

A Case of Urinary Tract Infection Caused by Multidrug Resistant Streptococcus mitis/oralis.

S. mitis/oralis has been previously reported in isolated cases of bacterial endocarditis and liver abscesses. Its presence in urine is generally considered a contaminant. A 66-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital due to recurrent chest tightness and four-year history of exertional dyspnea. On the second day of admission, the patient presented with urgent and frequent urination, as well as dysuria. Both initial and subsequent urine cultures showed S. mitis/oralis infection, with polymorphonuclear leukocyte phagocytosis observed in the second sample. MALDI-TOF results confirmed the

In Vitro Effects of Streptococcus oralis Biofilm on Peri-Implant Soft Tissue Cells.

Human gingival epithelial cells (HGEps) and fibroblasts (HGFs) are the main cell types in peri-implant soft tissue. HGEps are constantly exposed to bacteria, but HGFs are protected by connective tissue as long as the mucosa-implant seal is intact. Streptococcus oralis is one of the commensal bacteria, is highly abundant at healthy implant sites, and might modulate soft tissue cells-as has been described for other streptococci. We have therefore investigated the effects of the S. oralis biofilm on HGEps and HGFs. HGEps or HGFs were grown separately on titanium disks and responded to challenge w

Streptococcus oralis cerebral abscess following monkey bite in a 2-month-old infant.

Although cerebral abscesses caused by animal bites have been reported, they are extremely rare in infants and have not been described following monkey bite. A 55-day-old male infant presented with a multi-loculated Streptococcus oralis cerebral abscess following a monkey bite on the scalp. There was a clinical response to antibiotic therapy and repeated surgical aspiration followed by a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. This is the first report of a patient with a brain abscess following a monkey bite.

Highly Variable Streptococcus oralis Strains Are Common among Viridans Streptococci Isolated from Primates.

Viridans streptococci were obtained from primates (great apes, rhesus monkeys, and ring-tailed lemurs) held in captivity, as well as from free-living animals (chimpanzees and lemurs) for whom contact with humans is highly restricted. Isolates represented a variety of viridans streptococci, including unknown species. Streptococcus oralis was frequently isolated from samples from great apes. Genotypic methods revealed that most of the strains clustered on separate lineages outside the main cluster of human S. oralis strains. This suggests that S. oralis is part of the commensal flora in higher p

Genotypic heterogeneity of Streptococcus oralis and distinct aciduric subpopulations in human dental plaque.

The genotypic heterogeneity of Streptococcus oralis isolated from the oral cavity was investigated using repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR. Unrelated subjects harbored unique genotypes, with numerous genotypes being isolated from an individual. S. oralis is the predominant aciduric bacterium isolated from noncarious tooth sites. Genotypic comparison of the aciduric populations isolated at pH 5.2 with those isolated from mitis-salivarius agar (MSA) (pH 7.0) indicated that the aciduric populations were genotypically distinct in the majority of subjects (chi(2) = 13.09; P = 0.0031). Probiotics Streptococcus salivarius 24SMB and Streptococcus oralis 89a interfere with biofilm formation of pathogens of the upper respiratory tract.

BACKGROUND: Infections of the ears, paranasal sinuses, nose and throat are very common and represent a serious issue for the healthcare system. Bacterial biofilms have been linked to upper respiratory tract infections and antibiotic resistance, raising serious concerns regarding the therapeutic management of such infections. In this context, novel strategies able to fight biofilms may be therapeutically beneficial and offer a valid alternative to conventional antimicrobials. Biofilms consist of mixed microbial communities, which interact with other species in the surroundings and communicate t

Streptococcus oralis Meningitis with Gingival Bleeding in a Patient: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

An 81-year-old man with a history of gingival bleeding presented with a fever, headache, and drowsiness. His mouth and full dentures were unsanitary. Laboratory tests revealed Streptococcus oralis meningitis caused by odontogenic bacteremia. We reviewed eight reported cases, including the present case, because S. oralis meningitis is rare. Our review indicated that S. oralis meningitis needs to be considered when encountering cases of a fever, disturbance of consciousness, and headache with episodes of possible odontogenic bacteremia.

Use of MALDI Biotyper plus ClinProTools mass spectra analysis for correct identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus mitis/oralis.

BACKGROUND: Differentiation of Streptococcus pneumoniae from other viridans group streptococci is well known to be challenging in clinical laboratories. Matrix assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) had been reported to be a good alternative for Streptococcus species level identification. However, differentiation of S. pneumoniae from other Streptococcus mitis group organisms was found to be problematic using the Bruker MALDI Biotyper system. METHODS: This study used the Bruker MALDI Biotyper system in addition to a mass spectra model analysis gen
