Osteology, variation, and adaptations of the oldest Eurasian little owl Athene vallgornerensis, with implications for the evolutionary history of the genus Athene (Aves: Strigidae).

Extant little owl (Athene noctua) and its relatives are iconic strigiform birds (Aves: Strigiformes) with a very poorly known evolutionary history. The anatomy and adaptation of early members of this group are poorly understood, as the fossil record of the genus Athene is very fragmentary prior to the Middle Pleistocene. The fossil taxon Athene vallgornerensis represents the earliest known species of Athene owls in Eurasia. Previously documented exclusively from the Lower Pleistocene of Mallorca and the Iberian Peninsula, this species was until now known from only a few postcranial elements, l

APPARENT PREVALENCE, DIVERSITY, AND ASSOCIATED LESIONS OF PERIORBITAL NEMATODES IN A POPULATION OF BARRED OWLS (STRIX VARIA) FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, USA.

Over the last four decades, Barred Owls (Strix varia) have expanded their range to include much of western North America, including California. This expansion is suspected to have contributed to declining populations of a closely related species, the federally threatened Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). As a result, understanding potential health threats to Barred Owls has implications for Spotted Owl health and recovery. From 2016 to 2020, 69 Barred Owls were collected to determine the apparent prevalence of periorbital nematode infection, to identify the parasite species pr

Anatomical study of the scleral ring and eyeball of the long-eared owl (Asio otus) with anatomical methods and diagnostic imaging techniques.

BACKGROUND: The scleral ring in birds consists of ossicles that are fixed as small plates by cartilage joints and have no articulation to other parts of the skeleton. OBJECTIVE: Due to inadequate examination of the scleral ring anatomy and its specific form in owls, this study aimed to investigate the exact structure of the scleral ring and some morphometric characteristics of the eyeball in a long-eared owl (Asio otus). METHODS: The eyes of 20 alive and 10 dead male and female owls were examined. In addition to common anatomical methods, computed tomography scans and radiographic and ultras

Lesions associated with Pasteurella multocida infection in raptors.

Several case reports attest to the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida in raptors; however, the pathologic syndromes have not been fully described. We describe here the lesions encountered in 22 avian cholera cases in raptors. Besides septicemia-related lesions, a unique syndrome of esophageal abscesses was noted in 8 of the 11 (73%) Buteo hawks that succumbed to avian cholera. Esophageal abscesses were not noted in birds belonging to the order Strigiformes (owls) or family Falconidae (falcons and their relatives). Thus, the presence of white plaques in both the oropharynx and esophagus of

Anatomical Study and CT Scan of the Scleral Ring in the Little Owl (Athene noctua).

Athene noctua, commonly known as the little owl, thrives across the warmer climates of Europe, Asia and North Africa. One of the anatomical features of birds is the presence of a bony scleral ring in the eye. In avians, this configuration comprises ossicles that are affixed together in diminutive plates and are not articulated to other components of the skeleton. The morphology, number, development and location of the scleral ring vary among different vertebrate groups. The objective of this research is to furnish a comprehensive elucidation of the morphology of the scleral ring in the A. noct

Successful rehabilitation and release of a powerful owl chick with suspected rodenticide poisoning.

The successful rehabilitation and release of raptor chicks can be challenging, especially when the chicks are still in the post-fledging dependency period. Here, we report on a recently fledged powerful owl chick that was held in care for 33 days before being successfully reunited with its parents. We document the steps undertaken during the entire process from collection from the wild to post-release monitoring and recommend clinical procedures for treatment of raptors entering veterinary facilities. Success of this rehabilitation was facilitated by early care and treatment for potential rode

Mucocele in a spectacled owl (Pusilatrix perspicillata).

A 6-year-old breeding female spectacled owl (Pusilatrix perspicillata) was presented for a soft, fluid-filled, spherical mass under the neck that had been increasing in size over the previous 3 days. Results of a fine-needle aspirate of the mass showed clear, pale-yellow fluid with a total protein of 12.6 g/L. Cytologic examination revealed erythrocytes, moderate numbers of heterophils, and numerous foamy mononuclear cells against a mucoid background. Macroscopically, the mass appeared to be attached firmly to the esophagus. The mass was excised surgically and submitted for histopathologic exa

Integrative description and histopathological lesions of Cyathostoma americana (Nematoda, Syngamidae) parasitizing a barn owl (Tyto alba) in Chile.

Syngamid worms (Nematoda: Syngamidae) parasitizing birds of prey are considered cosmopolitan, but the efforts to understand their biology and systematics are restricted to the Holarctic region. However, in the Neotropical region there is only one recent record with no data about its molecular characterization or its significance to the health of its hosts. Thus, this study aimed to identify through an integrative approach the Syngamid worms parasitizing a native owl, and to describe its pathological consequences. A total of 14 barn owls (Tyto alba) were dissected between 2015 and 2021, from wh

Optocollic responses in adult barn owls (Tyto furcata).

Barn owls, like primates, have frontally oriented eyes, which allow for a large binocular overlap. While owls have similar binocular vision and visual-search strategies as primates, it is less clear whether reflexive visual behavior also resembles that of primates or is more similar to that of closer related, but lateral-eyed bird species. Test cases are visual responses driven by wide-field movement: the optokinetic, optocollic, and optomotor responses, mediated by eye, head and body movements, respectively. Adult primates have a so-called symmetric horizontal response: they show the same fol

Pulsed resources at tundra breeding sites affect winter irruptions at temperate latitudes of a top predator, the snowy owl.

Irruptive migration is mostly observed in species specialized on pulsed resources and is thought to be a response to unpredictable changes in food supply. We assessed two alternative hypotheses to explain the periodic winter irruptions of snowy owls Bubo scandiacus every 3-5 years in temperate North America: (a) the lack-of-food hypothesis, which states that a crash in small mammal abundance on the Arctic breeding grounds forces owls to move out of the tundra massively to search for food in winter; (b) the breeding-success hypothesis, which states that high abundance of tundra small mammals du

Horner Syndrome in Birds of Prey.

Horner syndrome, which results from oculosympathetic denervation, has rarely been reported in birds. A retrospective study was conducted in a raptor rehabilitation program to gain further insight into Horner syndrome in birds. Data from 5128 live raptors admitted over 20 years were reviewed. Horner syndrome was identified in 22 individuals from 13 different species. Raptors from the orders Strigiformes, Accipitriformes, and Falconiformes were affected, with the last order being underrepresented. Ptosis of the upper eyelid was the most commonly reported clinical sign in the birds diagnosed with

Anthropogenic threats to owls: Insights from rehabilitation admittance data and rodenticide screening in Texas.

Owls (Strigiformes) provide myriad ecosystem services and are sentinels for ecosystem health. However, they are at continued risk from anthropogenic threats such as vehicle collisions, entanglement with human-made materials, and exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), a widespread pesticide known to affect owls. Texas is an important region for numerous migratory and non-migratory owl species in the United States (US), yet assessments of threats owls face here are lacking preventing the development of informed conservation strategies. This study coupled assessment of admittance data from

Burrowing owls as potential phoretic hosts of ground squirrel fleas during a plague epizootic.

During the course of a plague epizootic, decimation of rodent host populations may result in the transfer of fleas to alternate or phoretic hosts, including to sympatric raptors that prey on rodents. We studied flea abundance and flea species assemblages on burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) in southwestern Idaho before (2012 - 2014), during (2015 - 2016), and after (2017) an epizootic of plague in Piute ground squirrels (Urocitellis mollis). We examined (1) if a larger proportion of burrowing owl nests contained fleas, (2) the likelihood that owls within a high flea abundance class

An owl-inspired temporal transformer for enhanced shrimp detection in aquatic environments.

This study introduces NOCT-A-VIS, which stands for Nocturnal Adaptive Vision System, symbolizing a bio-inspired framework that mimics owl-like visual adaptations for detecting underwater objects in low-light environments. From the methodological point of view, the physical characteristics of owls' vision from the NOCT-A-VIS framework are incorporated as dedicated computational modules. The proposed shrimp detection transformer analyzes light reflection to emulate the function of the Tapetum Lucidum (TL), which is a deep reflect part of retina exists in owls, improves the visual capability to v

Active monitoring of long-eared owl (Asio otus) nestlings reveals widespread exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides across different agricultural landscapes.

The widespread use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) poses a worldwide threat to farmland wildlife. These compounds accumulate in tissues of both target and non-target species, potentially endangering both direct consumers and their predators. However, investigations on ARs in blood of free-ranging predatory birds are rare. Here, the long-eared owl (Asio otus) has been used as a model predator to assess AR exposure in different agricultural landscapes from a Mediterranean semiarid region. A total of 69 owlets from 38 nests were blood-sampled over 2021 and 2022, aiming to detect AR residues a

Evaluation of the common pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis) cornea using light and scanning electron microscopy.

The common pauraque Nyctidromus albicollis (Gmelin, 1789) is a widespread avian species; however due to its nocturnal habits and reclusive behaviour, little is known about their vision and ecology. Most avian species are visually dependent with advanced visual systems providing high spatial resolution, on the species needs. Each ocular structure has a specific role in contributing towards high visual function, and the cornea is the first refractive structure in the visual process. However, the common pauraque cornea had not been described until the present data. Therefore, this study aims to d

Second generation anticoagulant rodenticides in tawny owls (Strix aluco) from Great Britain.

Secondary exposure of vertebrate predators to second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) is widespread in Britain. Tawny owl (Strix aluco) populations in the UK are thought to have declined since the 1970s, when SGARs were first introduced, and these compounds may have contributed to any decline in owl numbers. Our aims were to conduct the first systematic survey of SGAR exposure in tawny owls and ascertain whether there had been a change in the proportion of exposed birds that was concurrent with the decline in the population. Liver difenacoum, bromadiolone, flocoumafen and brodifac

Time and reproductive phase-dependent effects of exogenous melatonin on the pineal gland and ovary of a nocturnal bird, the Indian spotted owlet, Athene brama.

In a tropical nocturnal bird, the Indian spotted owlet, Athene brama, the intraperitonial injection of an identical amount (20 mg/100 g b. wt/day) of exogenous melatonin (MEL) for 15 consecutive days increased the pineal weight and plasma MEL level in sexually active birds while it decreased them in inactive birds more potently when injected in the evening (18.30-19.30 h) rather than the morning (0500-0600 h). On the other hand, more efficiently than the morning hour treatment, the evening hour MEL injection decreased the ovary weight and plasma estradiol and progesterone levels both in sexual

West Nile virus survey of birds and mosquitoes in the Dominican Republic.

We report West Nile virus (WNV) activity from a new area on Hispaniola, in the vicinity of Monte Cristi National Park in northwest Dominican Republic. Specific anti-WNV antibodies were detected in 12 of 58 (21%) resident birds sampled in March 2003, representing six species in the orders Cuculiformes (cuckoos), Strigiformes (owls), and Passeriformes (song birds). This seroprevalence is the highest reported from any site in the Caribbean Basin. Virus was not detected in any mosquitoes or tissues from bird specimens. Testing of 20 sick or dead birds was negative for WNV. Undetermined flavivirus
