Larynx synchronised stroboscopy--a new tool for outcome measures in the voice clinic.

Direct vocal fold synchronised stroboscopy is a new technique for obtaining useful images of pathological voice, with reduced requirements for both vocal fold cycle regularity and the duration of sustained phonation. Precise synchronisation of the firing of the stroboscope from the Laryngograph waveform, and the capture of images and waveforms into a computer, allows inspection of short periods of phonation (less than one second) as a continuous replay of the images. Replay can be continued indefinitely, automatically repeating the short period of image capture, eliminating the need to rewind

Evaluation of upper airway obstruction in snoring patients using digital video stroboscopy.

Stroboscopy is routinely used in voice disorder clinics but its use in studying the mechanisms of upper airway obstruction in patients who snore has not yet been described. This study combines the use of stroboscopy during sleep nasendoscopy to evaluate the oscillations and vibrations observed during snoring in slow motion. In addition, we utilised the multi-dimensional voice programme simultaneously to study some of the acoustic parameters of snoring whilst visualising the dynamics of the upper airway. Forty-five patients with primary snoring or mild obstructive sleep apnoea were recruited at

The evaluation of benign glottic lesions: rigid telescopic stroboscopy versus suspension microlaryngoscopy.

Rigid telescopic strobo-video-laryngoscopy (RTS) is a primary clinical assessment methodology in the office evaluation of benign glottic lesions. However, diagnostic observations can be made only at the time of suspension microlaryngoscopy (SML). The records of 100 consecutive patients undergoing microlaryngoscopy for benign glottic lesions were retrospectively reviewed. Nine of 100 patients were found to have additional glottic lesions during SML. Sixteen additional lesions were noted in these nine patients. Fifteen of 16 lesions were sulci and/or mucosal bridges. Forty-five percent (4/9) of

Glottal area and vibratory patterns studied with simultaneous stroboscopy, flow glottography, and electroglottography.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between variations in glottal area and vibratory patterns during phonation studied with stroboscopy and glottographic methods. Two normal speaking male and three female subjects were examined by means of simultaneous stroboscopy, flow glottography, and electroglottography. Estimations were made of the glottal area from pressure and flow data using the formula described by van den Berg. Significant correlations were found for the male phonations between estimations and measurements of the minimum glottal area (glottal insufficienc

The Efficiency of (videolaryngo) stroboscopy in Detecting T1a Glottic Carcinoma and Its Preliminary Stages.

OBJECTIVE: The efficiency of laryngovideostroboscopy (LVS) in detecting premalignancies of the vocal fold and early glottic cancer was determined in a prospective monocentric study. In addition, the recovery rate of the mucosal membrane on the vocal fold after surgical intervention was determined by LVS. METHODS: We included 159 patients with a leukoplakia of the vocal folds and 50 healthy controls. Clinicopathological data and LVS characteristics (amplitude, mucosal wave, nonvibratory segment, glottic closure, phase symmetry, periodicity) at the lesion site were obtained and compared with th

Is a voice-specific instrument more indicative of stroboscopy results than common clinical queries?

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) predicts diagnoses made via laryngoscopy/stroboscopy, as compared to common clinical inquiries about vocal characteristics. METHODS: We prospectively collected data from a cohort of 204 consecutive patients newly presenting for ambulatory laryngology evaluation. Each patient completed the VHI-10 and 16 concurrent mainstream queries about vocal characteristics such as weakness, breathiness, fatiguability, or inability to shout. Using the objective diagnoses made by laryngoscopy/stroboscopy as a gold standard, the area under

Sensitivity and specificity of stroboscopy in preoperative differentiation of dysplasia from early invasive glottic carcinoma.

Leukoplakia is a descriptive clinical term designating a white patch or plaque of the mucosa and must be complemented by histology, which can range from simple totally benign keratosis with or without atypia up to invasive carcinoma. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of videostroboscopy in preoperative differentiation of early invasive glottic carcinoma from intraepithelial atypia and dysplasia. 46 patients with a total of 60 leukoplakia lesions on the vocal folds were included in the study. Videostroboscopy was used to divide them into two groups based on preservation of the m

The dysphonic videolaryngoscopy with stroboscopy paradox and challenge of acquired subglottic stenosis after laryngotracheal reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: There's no greater challenge in pediatric laryngology than diagnosis and treatment of chronic dysphonia following laryngotracheal reconstruction of acquired subglottic stenosis. Videolaryngoscopy with stroboscopy provides incomparable diagnostic information to fiberoptic endoscopy. Unfortunately, this pediatric subpopulation which would benefit the most from videolaryngoscopy with stroboscopy infrequently does. We present the unique videolaryngostroboscopic patterns with their diagnostic and treatment implications in this complex population. METHODS: From a total database of 113 ch

Assessment of Vibratory Characteristics in Children Following Airway Reconstruction Using Flexible and Rigid Endoscopy and Stroboscopy.

IMPORTANCE: Up to half of children have substantial dysphonia after airway reconstruction. Visual assessment of vocal function is valuable. Feasibility of flexible and rigid endoscopy has been reported; however, the clinical utility of stroboscopy has not been examined. Rating of vibratory characteristics, such as mucosal wave and amplitude of vibration, is essential for the development of interventions to improve voice outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine (1) clinicians’ ratings of anatomical and physiological features in children following airway reconstruction on initial voice evaluation using

Some pathologies of the larynx maybe missed on video-laryngoscopy which can be diagnosed on video-stroboscopy. Moreover, some pathologies can be diagnosed earlier, preventing reduced voice-related quality of life. Since the effective treatment of laryngeal pathologies is based on the correct diagnosis, this study was conducted to evaluate the added value of video-stroboscopy over video-laryngoscopy in patients with hoarseness of voice and to identify the pathologies in which video-stroboscopy has the maximum benefit over video-laryngoscopy.
