Struma Ovarii is one of the types of mature teratoma, with predominant thyroid tissue (>50%). It occurs in 1% of all cases of ovarian tumors and in 2.7% of dermoid tumors. There are no specific clinical, radiological or serum markers for this rare pathology. Rarely it may be accompanied by ascites and the increased level of CA-125. In general Stuma Ovarii is clinically defined as an ovarian malignancy. It is diagnosed only by histopathological examination of the surgical material. Diagnosis of Struma Ovarii dictates the need for advanced research of the thyroid. Struma Ovarii is mostly benign.

Hyperthyroidism is defined as an excessive production of thyroid hormones by eutopic or ectopic mature thyroid tissue. The overall prevalence of hyperthyroidism is 1.2% and the most common cause is Graves' disease. Struma ovarii represents 1% of all ovarian tumors and is an uncommon cause of ectopic hyperthyroidism. It is benign in >90% of the cases; usually asymptomatic, and only 8% are presented with thyrotoxicosis, being rare its association with Graves' disease. We report the case of a patient with this association.

A 41-year-old woman presented with multiple right lower quadrant masses which were removed and consistent with metastatic follicular thyroid cancer. Thyroidectomy revealed no primary malignancy and evaluation of her ovaries was positive for struma ovarii. The patient was diagnosed with metastatic struma ovarii stage IV. Nine days following the patient's second therapy with I for recurrent disease, planar and SPECT/CT imaging demonstrated multiple I avid peritoneal nodules. At least one of them, located along the medial margin of the spleen, would have been difficult to diagnose without hybrid

Struma ovarii, a rare germ cell tumor of the ovary composed of >50% thyroid tissue, is traditionally managed by gynecologic surgeons. Although struma ovarii is typically cured by simple excision, otolaryngology-head and neck surgeons may play a critical role in caring for these patients. In this article, we present two cases of struma ovarii and discuss the role of the otolaryngologist.

Struma ovarii (SO) is an uncommon monodermal teratoma predominantly composed of mature thyroid tissue. Approximately 5% of SO are malignant; however, metastases are rare. A single female in her 40s, with a medical history of Graves' disease and bilateral cystectomy 10 years prior for right endometriotic cyst and left SO, presented with an enlarging abdominal mass for 4 months. Ultrasound pelvis showed a 13.8 cm left adnexal heterogeneous solid-cystic mass with internal septations and vascularity. She underwent open left salpingo-oophorectomy and resection of fibrous nodules from the right infu

INTRODUCTION: Struma ovarii are quite unusual lesions that represent less than 3% of all teratomas and its malignant transformation is very uncommon. The clinical manifestations are characteristic of pelvic tumor and the hormonal metabolism is not usually modified. Radiography, employing ultrasound procedures, is the most commonly used pre-surgical detection method but only histological examination makes the diagnosis. The malignance recognition by pathological study not always is easy; in this sense, it requires an exhaustive sampling of the lesion, being specially carefully in some aspects r

BACKGROUND: Struma ovarii is a highly specialized form of mature ovarian teratoma consisting of thyroid tissue and exhibiting all the histological features of the thyroid gland. Malignant transformation of thyroid tissue in struma ovarii and metastasis are extremely uncommon. In rare cases, benign thyroid tissue may spread to the peritoneal cavity, and pathologic examination of the peritoneal implants shows multiple nodules of varying sizes of mature thyroid tissue similar to struma ovarii. This condition is termed "peritoneal strumosis."
SUMMARY: We report a 49-year-old woman with struma ova

BACKGROUND: Struma ovarii is a special type of ovarian dermoid cyst and accounts for approximately 2-3 % of all dermoid tumours. Benign struma ovarii may manifest as distant metastasis, called peritoneal strumosis, which makes it biologically similar to malignancy, and has been reported in limited cases but never discovered during pregnancy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a patient with a history of right struma ovarii cystectomy. During pregnancy, pelvic masses with non-specific clinical presentation were found again. During the caesarean section, contralateral struma ovarii with dissemination

INTRODUCTION: Struma ovarii are a rare type of cystic teratomas that are composed predominantly or entirely of thyroid tissue and account for less than 1 % of all ovarian tumours. Malignant presentations are even less common, accounting for approximately 5 % of struma ovarii. Due to their rarity, evidence to inform management is very limited. We report a distinctive case of a 27 year-old patient with malignant struma ovarii (MSO) during pregnancy.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient presented with acute lower abdominal pain and was treated with a laparoscopic cystectomy for ovarian torsion. Pathol

We report the case of a 42-year-old woman who presented with multiple pulmonary nodules. Surgical resection of 3 nodules revealed differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Thyroid and neck ultrasound was normal. A review of her history revealed that this patient underwent an ovarian cyst resection 15 years ago. Reexamination of pathology samples, with the help of immunohistochemical markers, concluded to a struma ovarii. Pelvic ultrasound was normal; F-18 FDG PET scan was negative. She had total thyroidectomy, with negative histology, followed by first I-131 therapy (3.9 GBq). Thyroglobuline (Tg) was

OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual case of hyperthyroidism from Graves' disease that was coexistent with malignant struma ovarii.
METHODS: We summarize the clinical history, physical findings, laboratory data, imaging studies, pathologic features, and treatment in a patient with recurrent hyperthyroidism and discuss the incidence of ovarian tumors of various histologic origins, including thyroid tissue (that is, struma ovarii).
RESULTS: Five years after diagnosis of Graves' disease and resolution of symptoms with 1 year of antithyroid drug therapy, a 53-year-old woman had recurrence of palpitat

Malignant struma ovarii (MSO) is a rare ovarian tumour. The co-occurrence of MSO and thyroid carcinoma is even rarer. There is no established treatment for these patients. We report a postmenopausal woman in her 60s who presented with left hip pain, increased urinary frequency and fatigue. Imaging showed a left adnexal cystic lesion 8.8 cm in diameter and an incidental 12×8 mm right ovarian cyst. She underwent total laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and findings were significant for bilateral stage IA MSO. The metastatic workup showed concurrent papillary thyroid c

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Struma ovarii is a monodermal teratoma which characterized by the presence of thyroid tissue. The symptoms of this tumor are nonspecific and thus misdiagnosis and indifference to other ovarian lesions are very common.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we described a case of struma ovarii that was successfully diagnosed and managed. The tumor is mimicking a malignant tumor based on ascites and tumor marker assessments. Although, thyroid function indices are normal.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: The initial footprint of the tumor is mostly based on incidental imaging, but definiti

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features, treatment and prognosis of struma ovarii.
METHODS: From January 1990 to January 2012, a total of 68 patients were diagnosed struma ovarii at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Clinical data of these patients were studied retrospectively.
RESULTS: (1) Characteristics of patients: the median age of patients was 42 years old (17-81 years). Of those patients, 64 cases (94%) were diagnosed begin struma ovarii and 4 (6%) were malignant struma ovarii. (2) CLINICAL FEATURE: 32(47%, 32/68) patients were identi

A 22 year old female patient presented with a three month history of pelvic discomfort and dysmenorrhoea. A pelvic MRI demonstrated a large mass measuring 10 x 6 cm in size. On T1 and T2 weighted images the mass was noted to be predominantly cystic. The mass also contained peripheral solid components as well as a large fat fluid level. Following excision, histological examination revealed a lesion with mature teratomatous elements but with a significant component (> 50%) being composed of mature thyroid tissue. A 2cm area within the lesion had the morphological pattern of a classical papillary

Struma ovarii is a rare form of monodermal ovarian teratoma composed predominantly of mature thyroid tissue. Although benign in most cases, it can present with ascites and elevated serum CA125 levels, mimicking ovarian carcinoma. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman with a complex ovarian mass, ascites, and an elevated CA125 level-an initial presentation highly suggestive of malignancy that was ultimately diagnosed as benign struma ovarii following surgical intervention. This case underscores how struma ovarii, though uncommon, can masquerade as ovarian cancer and may even be discovered i

Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is a common benign ovarian germ cell tumor. It is more predominantly seen in premenopausal women and contains at least two or more well-differentiated germ cell layers. It is termed a dermoid cyst if the ectodermal tissue is the predominant component. The complications of a dermoid cyst include torsion, malignant degeneration, rupture, and infection. The incidence of a ruptured dermoid cyst is around 1%-2% resulting in chemical aseptic peritonitis from spillage of the cyst contents. Usual clinical presentation is with diffuse abdominal or pelvic pain and abdominal
