As the health care delivery landscape changes, medical schools must develop creative strategies for preparing future physicians to provide quality care in this new environment. Despite the growing prominence of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) as an effective model for health care delivery, few medical schools have integrated formal education on the PCMH into their curricula. Incorporating the PCMH model into medical school curricula is important to ensure that students have a comprehensive understanding of the different models of health care delivery and can operate effectively as phy

Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) enable medical students to care for communities disproportionately burdened by mental illness and health inequities. More literature is needed on the process of piloting psychiatric services in the SRFC setting. In 2021, a team of medical students piloted psychiatric services at an existing SRFC within a transitional housing facility for women affected by domestic violence. This article narratively describes and reflects on this process. The process of piloting psychiatric services included (1) assessing the need for psychiatric services; (2) establishing stake

Examination of screening guideline concordance can help clinics and institutions identify and understand disparities within their own practices. We conducted a study to examine whether screening completion rates within a student-run free clinic (SRFC) reflected, exacerbated, or narrowed population-level disparities in outcomes by race/ethnicity and primary language. We compared completion rates for cervical cancer (n = 114), diabetic retinopathy (n = 91), colorectal cancer (n = 114), and breast cancer (n = 63) by race/ethnicity (Black, n = 37; Hispanic, n = 133; white, n = 54; other, n = 29) a

BACKGROUND: The average life expectancy of people who are homeless is approximately 20 years lower than the general population. Lack of access to healthcare is one of the key contributors to the increased morbidity and mortality.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to describe a student-run clinic that was established at a homeless shelter in Adelaide, Australia, to improve healthcare access for individuals who are homeless.
DISCUSSION: By enhancing the target population's health literacy, the clinic functioned as a bridge between healthcare services and individuals experiencing homelessne

CONTEXT: Student-run health clinics (SRHC) are commonly utilized to provide clinical experiences to students in healthcare education programs as well as healthcare services to a target community. Recent reports on athletic training SRHCs (AT-SRHCs) with a client population of university students, employees and/or community members have reported positive patient outcomes and high patient satisfaction, however there is limited data about the treated conditions, services and value provided by AT-SRHC.
OBJECTIVE: To track utilization of athletic training services at a free AT-SRHC.

The management of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) most commonly consists of a nine-month course of isoniazid (INH) therapy and is complicated by low adherence and completion rates. The Latent Tuberculosis Initiative at the HAVEN Free Clinic was developed to provide LTBI treatment to an underserved, high-risk, foreign-born population. We conducted a retrospective chart review to evaluate the program. Of 39 patients enrolled, 26 (67%) successfully completed nine months of INH, eight (21%) discontinued, and five (12%) were lost to follow-up. Patients had a median of nine encounters during th

BACKGROUND: Vaginitis is a common gynaecologic condition in patients assigned female at birth in the United States, most often caused by bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), or trichomoniasis vaginalis (TV). Symptoms such as discharge, irritation, and burning often overlap. Symptom-based diagnosis is frequently inaccurate, with correct identification in only about half of cases. Empiric treatment without confirmatory testing remains common and can drive inappropriate therapy and antimicrobial resistance. Uninsured populations face higher infection burdens and barriers to c

BACKGROUND: Mental and physical health problems are both contributory factors and drivers of homelessness. Adding to this, the homeless encounter numerous barriers when accessing healthcare services.
AIM: The aim was to determine the experiences of the homeless when accessing healthcare services and the reason why they visit Trinity Health Services (THS).
SETTING: Trinity Health Services, a student-run clinic (SRC) based at an inner-city church in Johannesburg, South Africa, provides free acute healthcare services to the homeless.
METHODS: This qualitative study comprised three focus group

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are a leading cause of pain, disability, and functional limitation worldwide and disproportionately affect underserved populations. Student-run free clinics frequently provide essential primary care services but often lack the specialty capacity needed to address MSK-related complaints. This study describes the implementation of a specialty-focused MSK clinic within a community-based student-run free clinic in Puerto Rico. A specialty-focused MSK clinic was implemented within an existing student-run free clinic in Puerto Rico from April 2025 through March 2026

BACKGROUND: Refugees face compounding health burdens and access barriers that require culturally responsive, linguistically adapted clinical care. Student-run refugee health clinics offer high-value training environments but are rarely studied as sites of structured experiential learning. Grounded in Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), this study examined where the learning cycle breaks down for medical students in a community refugee clinic, with a focus on language barriers, cultural challenges, and resource limitations as the primary disruptions to effective learning and care.

Transgender individuals disproportionately experience homelessness and health disparities, including lack of access to gender-affirming care. The student-run Lotus Wellness Center provides care to transgender individuals experiencing homelessness, including primary care, mental health stabilization, and transition via hormone therapy, while medical students learn of the unique health needs of this community.

PROBLEM: Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) provide health and outreach services to underserved populations while offering medical students opportunities for service and education. Many SRFCs were forced to suspend in-person operations in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before March 2020, JeffHOPE, the SRFC at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, operated an evening clinic at 5 locations throughout Philadelphia each week.
APPROACH: JeffHOPE's response to challenges posed by COVID-19 focused on a redesign for a pilot clinic at a shelter site that expressed inter

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing popularity of Student-Run Clinics (SRCs) in Canada, there is little existing literature exploring their role within the Canadian healthcare system. Generalizing American literature to Canadian SRCs is inappropriate, given significant differences in healthcare delivery between the two countries. Medical students at the University of Calgary started a SRC serving Calgary's homeless population at the Calgary Drop-In and Rehabilitation Centre (CDIRC). This study explored stakeholders' desired role for a SRC within Calgary's primary healthcare system and potential

Background Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) are present in many medical schools and help bridge gaps in healthcare access for people experiencing homelessness. Volunteering for SRFCs is a common medical school experience, though it is seldom an integrated component of medical school curricula. This study aims to assess the benefit of formal integration of an SRFC into a medical school curriculum by investigating the common street-side clinic diagnoses and assessing whether clinic participation improved students' confidence in their clinical skills and navigation of the social determinants of h

Despite national guidelines promoting early cancer detection, adherence to screening recommendations remains below the USPSTF Healthy People 2030 targets. Nationally, only 71.8% of eligible adults receive colorectal cancer (CRC) screenings and 75.9% receive breast cancer (BC) screenings. Rates are significantly lower in uninsured or low-income populations, with just 7.5% and 35% receiving CRC and BC screenings, respectively. To improve presentation care delivery, a patient registry was developed at an urban, student-run free clinic serving the uninsured to track CRC and BC eligibility and scre

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide and disproportionately affect individuals facing socioeconomic hardship. In Puerto Rico, recent social and economic disruptions have intensified health inequities, yet data on MSK burden in underserved populations remain limited. Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) provide a unique setting to characterize MSK health in these populations. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints and functional limitations among adults attending a student-run free clinic in Puerto Rico and to ev

BACKGROUND: Uninsured, low-income Spanish-speaking women face systemic barriers to accessing gynecologic care, especially within Fort Worth, Texas. Because of this health disparity, we elected to evaluate screening outcomes of patients receiving care at La Clínica de las Mujeres (LCDM), a student-run clinic (SRC) providing free, culturally competent care to this population in Fort Worth, Texas.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the structure and utilization of an SRC on cancer screening adherence among uninsured, Spanish-speaking women in Fort Worth, Texas.

INTRODUCTION: Certain Asian American subgroups have higher smoking rates than the general population, contributing to preventable mortality. This study evaluated the implementation and outcomes of a proactive tobacco treatment outreach strategy at Paul Hom Asian Clinic (PHAC), a student-run free clinic serving Asian Americans in Sacramento, California.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of all active PHAC patients from August 2020 to June 2021. Volunteers used the Ask, Advise, Connect framework, which involves assessing tobacco use, advising smokers to quit, and referri

INTRODUCTION: Student-run clinics can supplement medical education by exposing students to diverse clinical scenarios and collaborating with underresourced populations. We examined the impact of volunteering at THRIVE, a student-run bridge clinic located within sheltered housing for individuals with substance use disorder, on students' attitudes toward people experiencing homelessness (PEH).
METHODS: This cohort study analyzed pre- and postsurvey matched responses from nonvolunteer and volunteer first-year medical students utilizing the Health Professional Attitudes Towards the Homeless (HPAT
