Case studies in occupational medicine for medical undergraduate training.

Medical undergraduate tutorials in occupational medicine were introduced in 1993 in Singapore. The tutorials discuss three case studies of patients likely to be encountered in primary health care practice--occupational dermatitis, tinnitus in a noise-exposed worker, and the finding of anaemia in a pre-employment examination. The cases are used to illustrate the importance of identification of occupational factors in the causation of disease; consideration of occupational factors in the management of disease; and measures for prevention of occupational and work-related diseases and promotion of

Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders in Dental Students and Dentists, and Its Relationship With Extra-Occupational Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Dentistry is a demanding profession, in which the oral health team is subjected to conditions, both intra-occupational to the profession (extreme and repetitive postures and movements during the working day) and extra-occupational, related to the demands of the profession (lack of time for basic needs such as diet, physical exercise, free time, sleep, social relations given the need for continuing education) that put health at risk. As a consequence, dentists and students have a very high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship be

Preparing Graduates for Interprofessional Practice in South Africa: The Dissonance Between Learning and Practice.

With South Africa's tumultuous history and resulting burden of disease and disability persisting post-democracy in 1994, a proposed decentralization of heath care with an urgent focus on disease prevention strategies ensued in 2010. Subsequently a nationwide call by students to adapt teaching and learning to an African context spoke to the need for responsive health professions training. Institutions of higher education are therefore encouraged to commit to person-centered comprehensive primary health care (PHC) education which equates to distributed training along the continuum of care.
