Stuttering in children will usually pass either with therapy or spontaneously. It remains permanent in approx. 20 to 30% of cases. Psychogenic and neurogenic stuttering have an adulthood onset. Behavioral methods aim to change the stutterer's attitude to his/her own speech or to control the extent of stuttering. By using assistive devices it is possible to slow down speech production and thereby increase its fluency. Due to the lack of suitable drugs, pharmacological therapy is seldom used. Moderate and severe stuttering should be treated also in children under school age.

PURPOSE: To discuss whether early intervention can stop stuttering development. To inform junior clinicians and students of speech-language pathology about contemporary views on this issue.
METHOD: The issue was discussed by two university researchers and two speech-language pathologists who provide public clinical services. Written conversational turns in an exchange were limited to 100 words each. When that written dialogue was concluded, each participant provided 200 words of final reflection about the issue.
RESULT: Most differences that emerged centred on the clinical evidence base for

BACKGROUND: The development of evidence-based practice, which is increasingly popular in stuttering treatment, is closely linked to the development of outcome measures.
AIMS: Two approaches to the development of stuttering treatment outcome measures are outlined. The first is the deductive, top-down approach, where the development of specific outcome measures is guided by a priori general conceptualizations of the nature of the disorder. A competing approach to the development of stuttering treatment outcome measures is outlined. This is the inductive, or bottom up approach. This approach use

PURPOSE: Epidemiological research of stuttering has frequently focused on children, with a relative paucity of population level data specific to adults. Prevalence data for adults are reassessed here, including a breakdown of whether stuttering is overt or covert, and whether onset was in childhood or adulthood. The engagement of adults who stutter with stuttering communities is also estimated.
METHODS: Prevalence calculations were based on data from studies having the strongest designs, following the systematic review of Gattie, Lieven & Kluk (2024, this issue). Original data for engagement

This qualitative phenomenological study explored how adults who stutter in Türkiye experience stuttering across the life course and interpret their therapy experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten adults who stutter and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified: growing up with feelings of conditional acceptance, living under anticipated negative evaluation, and reconstructing agency in therapy. Participants described stuttering as a relational and context-dependent experience shaped by social expectations across childhood and a

PURPOSE: School-age children and adolescents frequently have difficulty developing positive identities around their stuttering. Many students experience both physical and social consequences from stuttering. The great lengths that speakers go to try to hide their stuttering and to speak fluently increase their difficulty. As long as school-age children who stutter try to identify as fluent speakers, they will have difficulty lessening the negative impact of stuttering on their lives. Fortunately, many people who stutter also report positive stuttering experiences. Speech-language pathologists

PURPOSE: The Fifth Croatia Stuttering Symposium of 2022 continued the Fourth Croatia Stuttering Symposium 2019 theme of the connection between research and clinical practice. At the 2022 Symposium, there were 145 delegates from 21 countries. This paper documents the contents of the second of three Symposium modules.
METHODS: The module topic was that some children with early stuttering will recover naturally. A clinical situation was considered where a parent of a 3-year-old child asked if a clinician can predict whether their child will recover from stuttering without treatment.
RESULTS: A

UNLABELLED: An evidence-based framework can be described as an empirically-driven, measurement-based, client-sensitive approach for selecting treatments. It is believed that using such a framework is more likely to result in a clinically significant outcome. For this paper, a clinically significant outcome was defined as a meaningful treatment change. It was suggested that there are at least three groups for whom a treatment's outcome is meaningful. These groups include clinicians/clinical researchers, the clients, and relevant others who have some interest in the outcome (e.g., parents of a c

BACKGROUND: Stuttering has traditionally been conceptualized as a motor speech disorder; however, accumulating evidence suggests that auditory processing differences and emotional factors may also contribute to its clinical presentation. Despite increasing interest in these domains, the interplay between auditory cortical processing, stuttering severity, and anxiety in adults remains incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine auditory evoked cortical responses (P1, N1, P2, and mismatch negativity [MMN]) in adults who stutter compared with fluent-speaking controls, and to

OBJECTIVE: Stuttering is a common speech disorder among the general population, characterized by disruptions in the fluency of speech. Even if many studies have been managed on stuttering, the etiology has not yet been exactly explained. This article aims to assess the level of cytokines in patients who stutter to provide evidence-based guidelines for clinicians.
METHODS: A total of 74 children, including 34 who were stutterers and 40 who were controls, aged 4-15 years were included. The children with stuttering completed the Stuttering Severity Instrument-3 (SSI-3) form. Serum concentrations

Purpose This study measured between-groups differences in perceived speech skills and personality characteristics of a 12-year-old male child who stutters (CWS) as a function of a written factual stuttering disclosure statement, delivered by the CWS, his "mother," or his "teacher." Method Four hundred twenty-four college-age adults were assigned to one of four groups, including three experimental groups (i.e., written self-disclosure, mother-written disclosure, and teacher-written disclosure) and a control group (no written disclosure). Participants in the control conditions viewed a brief vid

UNLABELLED: Adolescence is a complicated phase of maturation during which a great deal of physical, neurological and social development occurs. Clinically this phase is thought to be the last chance to arrest the development of the disorder of stuttering before it becomes chronic in adulthood. However, little treatment development for this age group has occurred. Previous research on the impact of stuttering during adolescence presents a complex picture of apprehension about speaking which does not, however, appear to interfere with social life. The purpose of the present study was to investig

It has previously been reported that men with developmental stuttering showed reduced concentration of copper in the blood, and a negative correlation between the copper level and the severity of stuttering. Disorders of copper metabolism may result in dysfunction of the basal ganglia system and dystonia, a motor disorder sharing some traits of stuttering. It has been shown that copper ions affect the dopamine and the GABA systems. With this background we investigated the plasma level of copper, the copper binding protein ceruloplasmin, and the estimated level of free copper in stuttering adul

Echo-reading is a practical therapeutic tool which has been proposed for use in stuttering, most especially when the functions of rhythm and association are disrupted in stuttered speech. After a period of preparation in which the mechanical work involved in speech is integrated, it is proposed that there should follow a period of listening and association, which serves to re-establish the spoken word with its meaning and expressivity. The subject undergoes rehabilitation in a living language which is correlated with the imagination, and with that Other quality which always forms a part of spe

PURPOSE: To discuss how speech-language pathologists can keep up with stuttering treatment research. To inform junior clinicians and students of speech-language pathology about this matter.
METHOD: The issue was discussed by two university researchers and two speech-language pathologists who provide clinical services. Written conversational turns in an exchange were limited to 100 words each.
RESULT: There was agreement among the group that keeping up to date with stuttering research is essential for speech-language pathologists, and to do so requires a basic understanding of research method

BACKGROUND: Developmental stuttering affects 1% of the population but its cause remains unclear. Recent PET studies of metabolism in the central nervous system suggest that it may be related to dysfunction in the basal ganglia or its connections with regions of the cortex associated with speech and motor control.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and characteristics of involuntary movements (IMs) in people who stutter and to investigate the hypothesis that these movements may be of a very similar nature to the IMs seen in patients with movement disorders due to basal ganglia dysfunction.
