OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) secondary to COVID-19 in the primary health care (PHC).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old woman was treated in a PHC facility for flu-like symptoms for 5 days and pain in the lower neck. Symptomatic drugs were prescribed, and the patient was tested for COVID-19. On reassessment, the patient presented a painful oedema on the thyroid gland, dysphagia, and improvement in flu-like symptoms. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories were prescribed, and thyroid function analysis and inflammatory markers were collected. Reassessment after 1 week show

A recent meta-analysis demonstrated the efficacy of stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke; however, its cost-effectiveness has not yet been sufficiently explored. Building on the clinical data from that meta-analysis, we aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the administration of mesenchymal stem cells for acute and subacute ischemic stroke compared with the standard of care. A cost-utility analysis was performed via simulation by using a Markov model. The participants were patients treated for acute or subacute ischemic stroke in hospitals in Japan. Stem cell therapy plus the standard o

BACKGROUND: We assessed the cost-benefit of person-centered care education for direct care staff of an Australian subacute rehabilitation hospital, with respect to clinical outcomes and service costs of persons with dementia.
METHODS: In a nonrandomized pre/post/follow-up design, clinical outcomes and service use were evaluated for matched comparison (n=77) and intervention (n=80) groups for delirium incidence, accidents/injuries, injury treatment, psychotropic medicines, length of stay, hospital readmissions and discharge destination. Group-level outcomes were monetized and included in a cos

Respiratory complications following spinal cord injury (SCI) have remained the leading cause of death across the lifespan and are one of the most common reasons for hospitalization. Complications from altered respiratory physiology after SCI include atelectasis, pneumonia, venous thromboembolic disease, and sleep-disordered breathing. The risk for complications is greater with higher SCI levels and severity, and mortality from pneumonia is heightened compared to the general population. Optimal primary care for individuals with SCI includes appropriate surveillance for SCI-specific respiratory

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive disease caused by wild-type measles virus leading to premature death. Early diagnosis may help in medical interventions and counseling. The aim of this study was to ascertain diagnostic errors and their possible causes. Retrospective case record analysis of patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, evaluated over a 10-year period, was performed. The following data were analyzed: initial symptoms and diagnosis, interval between onset of symptoms to diagnosis, and implications of delayed diagnosis. Among the 307 patients evalua

BACKGROUND: The measurement and valuation of quality of life for older people is critical for economic evaluation and for person-centred quality assessment across health and aged care sectors. However, most existing quality of life (QoL) measures were developed for younger populations and do not encapsulate what is important to older people’s QoL. The Quality of Life – Aged Care Consumers (QOL-ACC), a preference-based quality of life measure, co-designed with older Australians in aged care, addressed this gap and is now part of the National Aged Care Quality Indicator Program. Health and aged

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prevalent, chronic disease with heterogenous recovery and dementia risk. Poor brain health is associated with increased dementia risk, but brain health remains unexplored in TBI. Brain Care Score (BCS), a tool measuring brain health with physical, lifestyle, and social factors, has not been used in TBI. Retrospective cohort study of TBI-clinic visits in the Neurology Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion Clinic (9/2022-10/2025). Inclusion criteria: ≥18yo, self-reported TBI, BCS, functional outcomes. BACKGROUND: In the industrial world, non-specific back and neck pain (BNP) is the largest diagnostic group underlying sick-listing. For patients with subacute and chronic (= full-time sick-listed for 43 - 84 and 85 - 730 days, respectively) BNP, cognitive-behavioural rehabilitation was compared with primary care. The specific aim was to answer the question: within an 18-month follow-up, will the outcomes differ in respect of sick-listing and number of health-care visits?
METHODS: After stratification by age (< or = 44/> or = 45 years) and subacute/chronic BNP, 125 Swedish primary-care patient

BACKGROUND: Advanced technologies are increasingly used to address impaired mobility after neurological insults, with growing evidence of their benefits for various populations. However, certain robotic devices have not been extensively investigated in specific conditions, limiting knowledge about optimal application for healthcare.
OBJECTIVE: To compare effectiveness of conventional gait training with exoskeleton-assisted walking for non-traumatic brain injury during early stage rehabilitation.
METHODS: Clinical evaluation data at admission and discharge were obtained in a retrospective cas

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial with follow-up to 6 months.
OBJECTIVE: This was a comparative effectiveness trial of manual-thrust manipulation (MTM) versus mechanical-assisted manipulation (MAM); and manipulation versus usual medical care (UMC).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common conditions seen in primary care and physical medicine practice. MTM is a common treatment for LBP. Claims that MAM is an effective alternative to MTM have yet to be substantiated. There is also question about the effectiveness of manipulation in acute and subacute LB

BACKGROUND: Most patients transported by Ontario paramedics to the emergency department have non-emergent conditions and may be more appropriately served by subacute community-based care centres. We sought to determine consensus on a set of patient characteristics that could be useful to classify retrospective emergency department visits that had a high probability of being primary care-like and potentially redirectable to a subacute care centre by paramedics.
METHODS: We conducted a modified Delphi study to assess expert consensus on characteristics of patients transported by paramedics to t

A total of 7,899 specimens submitted for live clinical Trichomonas vaginalis analyte-specific reagent (ASR) screening from 2008 to 2010 were audited on the basis of patient gender, specimen source, molecular Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis results, and relative light unit (RLU) data yielded by T. vaginalis ASR. Only 1.4% of the screening was ordered by emergency department clinicians. The screening volume in 2010 was 126% higher than that in 2008. The proportions of annual female and male screening remained consistent throughout the 3-year interval (∼92 and 8%, respectively). A

BACKGROUND: Subacute low back pain (LBP) is a highly prevalent condition and a major contributor to disability and health care burden. Early identification of individuals at risk of poor functional recovery is essential to support decision-making in primary care. Although prior research has identified relevant clinical and psychosocial predictors, the application of machine learning techniques for modeling disability and pain outcomes in this population remains limited.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study involving 92 adult patients with subacute LBP attending primary care

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal condition and, globally, a leading cause of years lived with disability. It leads to reduced social participation, impaired quality of life, and direct and indirect costs due to work incapacity. A coordinated approach focusing on psychosocial risk factors, active reeducation, and the early use of tools to maintain employment, may be effective for improving prognosis of patients with LBP. Primary care professionals and multidisciplinary teams, who see patients in the early stages of LBP may be in the best position to implement such a c
