Genetic syndromes with localized subcutaneous fat tissue accumulation.

Syndromes with localized accumulation of subcutaneous fatty tissue belong to a group of genetically and phenotypically heterogeneous disorders. These diseases may show some common signs, such as nodular fat, symmetrical fat masses, obesity, fatigue, lymphedema and symmetrical lipomas (painful or otherwise). Other symptoms may be specific for the different clinical entities, enabling correct differential diagnosis. Disorders belonging to this spectrum are lipedema, generalized diffuse or nodular forms of Dercum disease, localized nodular Dercum disease and multiple symmetric lipomatosis. Here w

Subcutaneous entomophthoromycosis mimicking soft-tissue sarcoma in children.

AIM: Subcutaneous entomophthoromycosis (EM) is an uncommon fungal infection of childhood. This article is intended to draw the attention of pediatric surgeons to the fact that EM can mimic soft-tissue tumor. METHODS: It is a retrospective review of 16 children treated for subcutaneous EM between 2000 and 2013. RESULTS: The median age of patients was 3.5 years. The typical lesion was a discoid subcutaneous mass that can be easily lifted from deeper tissues (the doughnut lifting sign). Lesions were mostly distributed in the lower half of body. All the patients were immunocompetent. Correct cli

Abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue: a protective fat depot?

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is associated with increased metabolic and cardiovascular risk. The ectopic fat hypothesis suggests that subcutaneous fat may be protective, but this theory has yet to be fully explored. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants from the Framingham Heart Study (n = 3,001, 48.5% women) were stratified by visceral adipose tissue (VAT) into sex-specific tertiles. Within these tertiles, age-adjusted abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) tertiles were examined in relation to cardiometabolic risk factors. RESULTS: In the lowest VAT tertile, risk factor prevalence was low,

Phaeohyphomycosis of subcutaneous tissue caused by Phaeoacremonium parasiticum.

Though Phaeoacremonium parasiticum is an unusual cause of human disease, subcutaneous infection, eumycetoma, osteomyelitis, arthritis and even disseminated diseases, such as fungemia and endocarditis have been reported. Here, we report a case of subcutaneous abscess on the forearm due to P. parasiticum in a 26-year-old woman. There were no obvious predisposing factors. The patient was treated with surgical debridement followed by intravenous amphotericin B and itraconazole to which she responded well. We report this case, being rare and the first from India.

Disseminated cysticercosis involving orbit, brain and subcutaneous tissue.

Human cysticercosis is caused by dissemination of embryos of Taenia solium from the intestine via the hepatoportal system to the tissues and organs of the body. We report, probably the first case, where orbital cysticercosis was associated with multiple Cysticercus cellulosae cysts in the brain and subcutaneous tissue. Thorough screening for all the sites of involvement by the cyst is extremely useful for knowing the extent of dissemination, infection control, and for epidemiological purposes.

Ceftizoxime treatment of cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue infections.

Forty-seven adults with infected cutaneous lesions including decubitus ulcers, leg ulcers, cellulitis, pyoderma, and infected dermatitis were treated in a randomized single-blind study with ceftizoxime (2 gm/day, administered intravenously) or cefamandole (4 gm/day, administered intravenously). The duration of treatment ranged from five to 17 days with ceftizoxime and from six to 14 days with cefamandole. Both gram-positive cocci (mostly Staphylococcus sp) and gram-negative bacilli were cultured from the infected areas before treatment. Clinical and bacteriological responses to both drugs were

Accidental Extravasation of Mitomycin C into the Subcutaneous Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: Mitomycin C (MMC) is a common chemotherapeutic agent used to treat a variety of solid tumors. Cutaneous adverse events are rare, but MMC is a known vesicant reported to cause tissue necrosis and sloughing, erythema, and ulceration if incorrectly infused into the subcutaneous tissue. Definitive treatment of extravasation injuries due to MMC depends on the severity of the cutaneous manifestation, which includes stopping the infusion, removing the catheter, or possible debridement. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 70-year-old female with extensive soft-tissue injury seco

Rhinofacial entomophthoramycosis: an uncommon infection of the subcutaneous tissue.

Entomophthoramycosis can be found in subtropical and tropical regions. This case illustrates common clinical features of conidiobolomycosis. Although this disease is not common, physicians working in these regions should be familiar with the clinical manifestations to enable early diagnosis and treatment.

Adenocarcinoma of oesophagus metastasising to the subcutaneous soft tissue.

Skin and subcutaneous metastases are uncommon, and mostly originating from cancers of the breast, kidney, colon, lung, and melanoma. Oesophageal cancers rarely metastasise to the skin and subcutaneous soft tissue. Skin and subcutaneous metastases are associated with dismal prognosis. Only few related case reports have been published so far. In this report, we describe a 52year old patient with lower oesophageal adenocarcinoma who developed subcutaneous metastasis, 9months after neoadjuvant chemoradiation followed by trans-hiatal esophagectomy.

Biocompatibility of acetazolamide pastes in the subcutaneous tissue of rats.

This aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of two experimental acetazolamide (AZ)-based pastes in the subcutaneous tissue of rats. Both pastes contained AZ as the main component in similar concentration. The vehicle in experimental paste 1 was saline, while experimental paste 2 was prepared with propylene glycol. Sixty polyethylene tubes were sealed at one end with gutta-percha (GP), which served as a control. Half of the tubes were filled with paste 1 and half with paste 2. The tubes were implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of 15 rats, being 4 tubes for each animal. The a

Ultrasonographic Anatomy and Examination of the Subcutaneous Tissue (in Lymphedema).

Lymphedema is the excessive accumulation of protein-rich lymphatic fluid within the (sub)cutaneous compartments. In recent years, ultrasound examination has emerged as an indispensable tool for its prompt diagnosis and management. This pictorial essay offers a focused review of the anatomical and histological features of the subcutaneous tissue, to provide better insight into understanding the sono-anatomy in lymphedema. By delineating distinct sono-histological patterns within the subcutaneous tissue (fluid, cobblestone, snowfall, lymphatic lakes and sclerotic), a streamlined and reproducible

Biocompatibility evaluation of biodentine in subcutaneous tissue of rats.

INTRODUCTION: Biodentine (Septodont, St-Maur-des-Fossés, France) is a new material suitable for various clinical situations in endodontics, such as perforation repair, retrograde filling, pulp capping, and others. Because it is a new material, its properties should be analyzed before routine clinical use. Thus, this study evaluated the biocompatibility of Biodentine in the subcutaneous tissue of rats. METHODS: This study was conducted on 15 male rats. Two incisions were made on the dorsal region of each animal for the introduction of 4 tubes. One tube was empty, 1 was filled with zinc oxide-e

Subcutaneous tissue: to suture or not to suture at cesarean section.

OBJECTIVE: The null hypothesis for this investigation was that there was no difference in the frequency of wound disruption between women who had their subcutaneous tissues approximated with suture and those who did not during cesarean section. METHODS: During alternating months, consecutive women delivered by cesarean section either did (N = 716) or did not (N = 693) have their subcutaneous tissues closed with suture. All data were analyzed using chi square, Student's t-test, Fisher's exact probability test, analysis of variance, or logistic regression. RESULTS: A 32% decrease in the freque

Dimethyl fumarate attenuates subcutaneous adipose tissue inflammation in psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease with systemic manifestations beyond the skin, yet the role of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in disease biology and therapeutic response remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated inflammatory features of SAT in psoriasis and the effects of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) on this compartment. Six adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis received oral DMF for 24 weeks and were clinically evaluated measuring the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), showing a consistent reduction in disease severity during treatment. Biocompatibility evaluation of alendronate paste in rat's subcutaneous tissue.

Alendronate is a known inhibitor of root resorption and the development of alendronate paste would enhance its utilization as intracanal medication. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the biocompatibility of experimental alendronate paste in subcutaneous tissue of rats, for utilization in teeth susceptible to root resorption. The study was conducted on 15 male rats, weighing approximately 180-200 grams. The rats' dorsal regions were submitted to one incision on the median region and, laterally to the incision, the subcutaneous tissue was raised and gently dissected for introduction of
