Comparing results from jitter studies performed with voluntary and electrical activation is difficult to perform quantitatively, particularly in complex signals as seen in reinnervation. High jitter values in individual spikes in these multispike signals can be missed with both activation methods, which introduces a bias towards more normal values. With voluntary activation, triggering on a spike from an abnormal end-plate in multispike potentials will overestimate individual jitter values and the number of abnormal jitter values. With electrical stimulation, artefactually-increased jitter may b

Recent studies have demonstrated common cortical activity regions associated with esophageal acidification and swallowing. The effect of sensory signals imparted on these regions by esophageal acidification on swallow-related brain activity has physiological and clinical ramifications. Our aim in this study was to determine the effect of prior, unperceived esophageal acid exposure on cortical activity associated with swallowing. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques monitored brain activity associated with volitional swallowing before and after subliminal esophageal acid stim

BACKGROUND: During these two last decades, much research has shown that anxiety can be characterised by an attentional bias favouring threat stimuli processing. This bias plays a central role in the development and maintenance of pathological states associated with anxiety. The first part of this article concerns numerous variables that elucidate parts of the appearance and maintenance conditions of attentional bias associated with anxiety. Thus, clinical versus non-clinical states of individuals play an important role in attentional behaviour of anxiety: at an early stage of information proce

The experience of authorship arises when we feel that observed effects (e.g., the onset of a light) are caused by our own actions (e.g., pushing a switch). This study tested whether dysphoric persons' authorship ascription can be modulated implicitly in a situation in which the exclusivity of the cause of effects is ambiguous. In line with the idea that depressed individuals' self-schemata include general views of uncontrollability, in a subliminal priming task we observed that dysphoric (compared with nondysphoric) participants experienced lower authorship of action effects when the self-conc

The present study reviews the literature on the empirical evidence for the dissociation between perception and action. We first review several key studies on brain-damaged patients, such as those suffering from blindsight and visual/tactile agnosia, and on experimental findings examining pointing movements in normal people in response to a nonconsciously perceived stimulus. We then describe three experiments we conducted using simple reaction time (RT) tasks with backward masking, in which the first (weak) and second (strong) electric stimuli were consecutively presented with a 40-ms interstim

A sudden peripheral onset is a powerful attentional attractor. However, in real life potentially distracting events do not always occur as a single event, but rather they can occur in a repetitive fashion. Hence, one of the aims of the present study was to investigate how the attentional system reacts to multiple consecutive onsets within the same trial. The results, quite surprisingly, showed that repeated peripheral onsets do not have a negative impact on visual performance, while they confirmed that a single peripheral onset captures focused attention. We hypothesize the existence of a shor

This study tested the hypothesis that an immediate effect of exposure to masked phobic stimuli on avoidance of the corresponding feared object would be maintained 1 year later. Fifty-three spider-phobic participants were identified with a questionnaire and a Behavioral Avoidance Test (BAT) with a live tarantula. One week later, they were administered 1 of 3 types of exposure: very brief (25-ms, masked) or clearly visible (125-ms, unmasked) images of spiders, or very brief images of flowers. They engaged in the BAT again immediately thereafter. One year later, they returned for a follow-up BAT.

We studied submental stimulation on supraglottic resistance (Rsg) in 5 normals and 6 patients with obstructive sleep apnea. We then examined the most effective sites of stimulation in the submental regions, and the relationships between Rsg and stimulation frequency and voltage in the supine position. Inspiratory and expiratory Rsg's were obtained as the slope of the linear portion of the pressure-flow relation determined at zero flow. Before stimulation, inspiratory and expiratory Rsg's were 0.76 +/- 0.06 (means +/- SE) and 0.61 +/- 0.02 cmH2O.L-1.sec, respectively, in normals, and 1.04 +/- 0

The present experiment was conducted to investigate how prior information affects subsequent person perception and when perceivers can control such an effect. One of three types of trait related words (i.e., hostility-related, friendliness-related, and neutral words) was subliminally or supraliminally presented to subjects, and subsequently, subjects rated the impression of four targets: a hostile person, a friendly person, a neutral person and themselves. Although results did not show that supraliminally presented words affected targets' impressions, they showed that the impressions sometimes

BACKGROUND: Subliminal intragastric fatty acid infusion attenuates subjective and brain responses to negative emotion induction. However, the underlying gut-brain signaling mechanisms remain unclear, and it is unknown whether such effect equally applies to positive emotion.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the interaction between fatty acid-induced gut-brain signaling and subjective responses to positive emotion, and the potential mediational role of gastrointestinal (GI) hormones.
DESIGN: Twelve fasting healthy women underwent intragastric infusion of 2.5 g lauric acid or saline, after wh

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) demonstrates that the subliminal presentation of arousing stimuli can activate subcortical brain regions independently of consciousness-generating top-down cortical modulation loops. Delineating these processes may elucidate mechanisms for arousal, aberration in which may underlie some psychiatric conditions. Here we are the first to review and discuss four Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) meta-analyses of fMRI studies using subliminal paradigms. We find a maximum of 9 out of 12 studies using subliminal presentation of faces contributing to ac

We examined effects of exposure to unreportable images of spiders on approach towards a tarantula. Pretests revealed awareness of the stimuli was at chance. Participants high or low (top and bottom 15%) on fear of spiders were randomly assigned to receive computer-generated exposure to unreportable pictures of spiders or outdoor scenes. They then engaged in a Behavioral Approach Task (BAT) with a live tarantula. Non-fearful participants completed more BAT items than spider-fearful individuals. Additionally, as predicted, a significant interaction (F(1,48)=5.12, p<.03) between fear of spiders a

Epicutaneous electrostimulation of nerve fibers was used in 192 patients with the neurologic manifestations of spinal osteochondritis in order to alleviate the pain syndrome. Two stimulation regimens were used: a high-frequency one (rectangular impulses of current with an 0.1-0.2 msec duration and a 70 Hz frequency and the intensity being subliminal for a motor response) and "acupuncture-like" a series consisting of seven impulses of the same duration and frequency with the repetition of three series in one second, the intensity of the irritant being over the motor response threshold). Despite general agreement that number and other magnitudes share analog format, there is disagreement about the extent to which representations of numerical and non-numerical magnitude recruit common cognitive and neural resources. Cross-dimensional interactions between number and other magnitudes on Stroop-like tasks have been taken as evidence for integration across magnitudes, but such effects are subject to alternative interpretations that allow for differentiated representations. Here we use a subliminal priming paradigm to test for interactions between different magnitudes (number and ar

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review presents a selection of recent studies in the field of vestibular neuroscience, including how vestibular stimulation modulates space and body perception.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent neuroimaging studies identified the operculo-insular/retroinsular cortex as the core vestibular cortex and showed how it is reorganized after vestibular dysfunctions. Subliminal galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) induces long-term reduction of hemispatial neglect and improves vertical perception in stroke patients, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be identified. Healthy voluntee

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often experience impairments in emotion processing. Previous literature has highlighted deficits in facial expression recognition and body movement processing, including social signals. However, to date, the integration of facial and bodily expressions has been investigated in healthy populations, but not in individuals with PD. The present study assessed the reciprocal influence between facial and body emotion recognition by using subliminal priming paradigms in a sample of PD patients and in healthy controls (HC). Participants completed both a Face-Body

The present study investigated the modulation of cardiac defense by presenting emotional pictures under both effective and non-effective masking procedures. The aim was to test Ohman's model of pre-attentive processing of fear. Participants were 48 women volunteers with intense fear of spiders. The stimulus to elicit cardiac defense was a white noise of 105 dB, 500 ms duration and instantaneous risetime. Subjects had two trials of picture-noise presentation-one with a picture of a spider and one with a picture of a flower-, either under an effective masking procedure (30 ms duration) or a non-

Behavior may be automatically prompted by cues in our social environment. Previous research has focused on cognitive explanations for such effects. Here we hypothesize that affective processes are susceptible to similar automatic influences. We propose that exposure to groups stereotyped as dangerous or violent may provoke an anxiety response and, thus, a tendency to move away. In the present experiment, we subliminally exposed participants to images of such a group, and found that they displayed greater avoidance in a subsequent interaction. Critically, this effect was explained by their incr

An emotional Stroop task with four word types (panic threat, obsessive-compulsive threat, general threat, and neutral) and two presentation conditions (supraliminal, subliminal) was used in two experiments. The first experiment involved 21 panic disorder (PD) patients and 20 normal controls; the second experiment 20 PD patients and 20 obsessive-compulsive patients. PD patients, obsessive-compulsive patients, and normal controls did not differ in Stroop interferences. In addition, there were no significant correlations between reduction of PD symptoms and differences between pre- and post-treat

Instrumental conditioning (IC) consists in actively learning to approach rewarding stimuli and to avoid punishing stimuli. This central process for adaptation requires a relatively high computational capacity because it entails the integration of knowledge regarding stimuli, behaviours, and outcomes. Recent studies using subliminal exposure show that IC occurs only for consciously perceived stimuli, suggesting that IC may require awareness. In the present study, we investigated whether IC could occur when implicit processing is stimulated not by subliminal exposure but by employing predictive
