Symmetry of synuclein density in autopsied Parkinson's disease submandibular glands.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral tissue biopsy in Parkinson's disease (PD) may be valuable for clinical care, biomarker validation, and as research enrollment criteria. OBJECTIVE: Determine whether submandibular gland pathologic alpha-synuclein (aSyn) density is symmetrical and whether previous needle biopsy caused tissue damage. METHODS: Thirty autopsy-confirmed PD cases having fixed submandibular gland tissue from one side and frozen submandibular gland tissue from the contralateral side were studied. Tissue was stained for phosphorylated aSyn and density (0-4 semiquantitative scale) was determined.

Plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland in patient with von Recklinghausen's disease.

Plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland is an extremely rare tumor. Herein, we report a case of plexiform neurofibroma in a patient with a von Recklinghausen's disease (NF-1) who presented with a submandibular mass mimicking a submandibular gland tumor. Complete surgical excision provides the best treatment and final diagnosis. A neurofibroma should be considered in the differential diagnosis for submandibular mass.

Pediatric Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease masquerading as a submandibular gland tumor.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare disorder that typically affects the cervical lymph nodes. The disease usually occurs in women in their late 20s or early 30s. Reports in the pediatric literature are sparse. Most authors consider Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease as a self-limiting disorder that requires no specific management but long-term follow-up. The clinical features of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease are easily confused with other less-benign conditions. Thus, an early biopsy is instrumental in making definite diagnosis and preventing unnecessary i

Lupus erythematosus profundus around the salivary glands: a case resembling submandibular salivary gland disease.

In a 29 year old Japanese woman with SLE, a bilateral submandibular mass was detected. Computed tomographic (CT) scan suggested inflammatory changes around the submandibular glands. Histological findings of the deep skin biopsy showed typical changes of lupus erythematosus profundus (LEP). LEP should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an unexplained submandibular mass in a subject with SLE.

Feasibility of repeat and bilateral submandibular gland needle biopsies in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Submandibular gland (SMG) biopsies detect pathological alpha-synuclein (aSyn) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The objectives of this study were to determine 1) the feasibility of performing a second SMG biopsy in previously biopsied patients, 2) the feasibility of doing bilateral SMG biopsies, 3) laterality of aSyn density, 4) whether aSyn density changes over time. METHODS: Seven PD patients (6 males) previously having positive unilateral SMG biopsies underwent bilateral needle biopsies. Staining with a validated antibody to pathologic p-serine 129 aSyn was performed

Reduced MIBG accumulation of the parotid and submandibular glands in idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alpha-synuclein pathology (ASP) is a characteristic histopathological finding in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). The ASP involves not only the brain but also extracranial structures. In the present study we utilized MIBG scintigraphy to measure the sympathetic innervation of the major salivary glands. We were interested in whether MIBG uptake in the major salivary glands represents a potential biomarker for ASP in PD. METHODS: We investigated 77 PD patients (age 61 ± 10 years, mean ± SD), while 15 non-PD patients (age 58 ± 15 years) with arterial hypertension, who underwent

Dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound for differential diagnosis of submandibular gland disease.

Intensity-time gradients (ITGs) of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can be used for non-invasive monitoring of gland-preserving treatment effects in sialolithiasis-related chronic sialadenitis as well as for imaging vascularization in tumors. The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate feasibility to distinguish different entities of submandibular gland disease including inflammatory alterations of the submandibular gland as well as benign and malignant tumors. In this prospective clinical study, ITGs in 30 patients with sialolithiasis-related chronic sialadenitis or an unilateral subman

Sonographic appearance of the submandibular glands in patients with immunoglobulin G4-related disease.

Swelling of the salivary glands is often an initial sign of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease or IgG4-related sclerosing/autoimmune disease. We encountered 2 patients with IgG4-related disease who showed swollen submandibular glands with a unique characteristic sonographic pattern. Bilateral submandibular glands of both patients were enlarged with a smooth contour. The internal echo texture indicated multiple hypoechoic foci scattered against a heterogeneous background, which characteristically appeared with a mottled or irregular netlike appearance. A histopathologic examination of a r

[The differential diagnosis of lymphogranulomatosis (Hodgkin's disease) and sialoadenitis of the submandibular salivary gland].

A case of Hodgkin's disease with local involvement of the submandibular area is described. Profound examinations found that the tumor did not originate from the salivary gland. Anatomic examination of the resected tumor revealed Hodgkin's diseases. The authors emphasize the necessity of differential diagnosis between Hodgkin's disease and chronic sialadenitis.

Submandibular gland is a suitable site for alpha synuclein pathology in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: To validate the role of α-synuclein (AS) pathology in submandibular gland (SMG) as a biomarker for Parkinson disease (PD). METHODS: We performed ultrasonography (USG) guided core needle biopsy of SMG in PD patients and procured SMG biopsy tissues or surgical excision specimens from non-PD patients as controls. Then, we compared AS deposition in the SMG tissues between the PD patients and the controls. We recruited 16 PD patients in this study. In each individual, two core needle biopsy tissues were obtained from the left submandibular gland under USG guidance. Fourteen sex and age-

Histopathological study of the human submandibular gland in graft versus host disease.

Major salivary gland dysfunction and severe xerostomia is one of the manifestations of graft versus host disease (GVHD). The histopathological evaluation of the major salivary gland in patients with GVHD has never been reported. The pathological findings of the submandibular glands in a GVHD patient who succumbed to the disease are described. Lymphocytic infiltration, parenchymal destruction, and fibrosis were observed, which may provide the pathophysiological mechanism for the xerostomia and hyposalivation observed in GVHD.

The use of sialodochoplasty in the treatment of benign inflammatory obstructive submandibular gland disease.

One of the most common causes of submandibular gland enlargement is benign inflammatory disease. The usual cause is ductal outflow obstruction due to either a calculus or stenosis allowing stasis and retrograde movement of the saliva into the acinar structures leading to an inflammatory response and gland enlargement. Faced with a submandibular mass, a work-up that will rule out neoplastic causes of submandibular enlargement is instituted. This includes clinical assessment, probing of the gland, radiocontrast sialography, and CT scanning. The treatment should reflect the obstructive nature of

Rosai Dorfman disease of the parotid and submandibular glands: salivary gland scintigraphy and oral findings in two siblings.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is an unusual clinical entity characterized by benign pseudolymphomatous proliferation with significant histiocytic infiltration. In the present paper, extranodal RDD of the major salivary glands causing salivary hypofunction and the results of salivary gland scintigraphy and ultrasound are presented in two siblings. Case 1: a 10-year-old boy with bilateral painless masses around the parotid and submandibular glands was referred. Ultrasound examination showed bilateral, well-defined, hypoechoic solid mass lesions within both parotid glands with minimal normal parenc

Differentially Aquaporin 5 Expression in Submandibular Glands and Cerebral Cortex in Alzheimer's Disease.

Impaired brain clearance mechanisms may result in the accumulation of aberrant proteins that define Alzheimer's disease (AD). The water channel protein astrocytic aquaporin 4 (AQP4) is essential for brain amyloid-β clearance, but it is known to be abnormally expressed in AD brains. The expression of AQPs is differentially regulated during diverse brain injuries, but, whereas AQP4 expression and function have been studied in AD, less is known about AQP5. AQP5 functions include not only water transport but also cell migration mediated by cytoskeleton regulation. Moreover, AQP5 has been reported

Lewy pathology of the submandibular gland in Lewy body disease: A report of autopsy cases.

Accumulation of phosphorylated α-synuclein in the central and peripheral nervous systems is a histological hallmark of Lewy body disease (LBD), including Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and LB-related pure autonomic failure. The submandibular gland is employed as a biopsy site for detecting Lewy pathology; however, the incidence of Lewy pathology in this region in autopsy-proven LBD cases at all stages from an aged Japanese cohort remains unclear. To validate the utility of Lewy pathology of the submandibular gland as a diagnostic biomarker for LBD, we investigated t

Delay in maturation of the submandibular gland in Chagas disease correlates with lower DNA synthesis.

It has been demonstrated that the acute phase of Trypanosoma cruzi infection promotes several changes in the oral glands. The present study examined whether T. cruzi modulates the expression of host cell apoptotic or mitotic pathway genes. Rats were infected with T. cruzi then sacrificed after 18, 32, 64 or 97 days, after which the submandibular glands were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemical analyses using an anti-bromodeoxyuridine antibody showed that, during acute T. cruzi infection, DNA synthesizing cells in rat submandibular glands were lower than in non-infected animals
