Diagnosis and treatment of epithelial salivary gland tumours in children and adolescents.

In a series of 2,871 epithelial salivary gland neoplasms managed in the Peking University School of Stomatology between 1974 and 1999, 86 arose in children <16 years of age (52 parotid, 12 submandibular gland, 2 sublingual gland, and 20 minor salivary gland). Considerable delay was encountered in diagnosis (benign 24 months and malignant 16 months). In this group of children, 46 tumours (53%) proved to be malignant, with an incidence in the parotid, submandibular, sublingual, and minor salivary glands of 31/52 (60%), 2/12, 0/2, and 13/20 (65%), respectively. Sixty-six of 86 neoplasms (77%) occ

Application of the Milan System for Reporting Submandibular Gland Cytopathology: An international, multi-institutional study.

BACKGROUND: The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) is a 6-tier diagnostic category system with associated risks of malignancy (ROMs) and management recommendations. Submandibular gland fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is uncommon with a higher frequency of inflammatory lesions and a higher relative proportion of malignancy, and this may affect the ROM and subsequent management. This study evaluated the application of the MSRSGC and the ROM for each diagnostic category for 734 submandibular gland FNAs. METHODS: Submandibular gland FNA cytology specimens from 15 intern

Hemangioblastoma arising from the submandibular gland.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to document and describe the clinical features of a hemangioblastoma arising from a submandibular gland. METHODS: A case report of a 63-year-old man with a right submandibular gland hemangioblastoma. RESULTS: Submandibular gland excision and histological examination revealed a hemangioblastoma. Subsequent evaluation with imaging studies found no association with von Hippel-Lindau disease. CONCLUSION: We report the first presentation of a hemangioblastoma arising in a salivary gland. Further evaluation of patients with a hemangioblastoma is recommended given the

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma of submandibular salivary gland: a rare case report.

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm characterized by cysts and papillary endophytic projections. It was first defined in 1991 by World Health organization as a separate entity. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. We present a case of papillary cystadenocarinoma arising from the submandibular gland in a 67-year-old male patient. Further, we have discussed the cytological and histopathological features of this rare entity and reviewe

Pleomorphic multicentric adenoma in the submandibular gland.

Neoplasms of salivary glands represent a small group among the diseases involving the head and neck complex. In this group, the pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequent neoplasm, yet involves the submandibular gland in only 12.3% of cases. A patient presenting a swelling in the region of the submandibular gland was submitted to an incisional biopsy, where a fragment of the gland and one juxtaposed node were removed. Histologically they were defined as pleomorphic adenoma. Later, the patient was submitted to submandibulectomy and two other nodes were found close to the gland and removed. All sp

Bilateral oncocytoma of the parotid gland.

Oncocytic neoplasms are a group of rare tumours that mostly affect the parotid gland (80%), sometimes affect the submandibular gland (9%) and rarely affect the intraoral minor salivary glands. The incidence of oncocytic neoplasms represents approximately 1% of parotid neoplasms and bilateral presentation is very rare. Herein we describe a single case involving bilateral presentation of oncocytoma of the parotid glands.

Imaging of the salivary glands.

CT and MRI have greatly facilitated evaluation of pathology of the three pairs of major salivary glands and the hundreds of minor salivary glands. Imaging can frequently offer a specific histological diagnosis for benign and malignant neoplasms of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Obstruction, infection, autoimmune processes, and congenital anomalies also are readily diagnosed. CT and MRI studies assess the anatomic extent of minor salivary gland neoplasms. Sialography continues to provide useful information about intrinsic abnormalities of the parotid and submandibular ducts.

Submandibular gland pleomorphic adenoma in a seven-year-old child: a case report.

Salivary gland neoplasms are rare in the pediatric age group. Pleomorphic adenomas in the submandibular gland are rarer. In this article, we present a seven-year-old female with a slowly growing mass in her right submandibular area. The firm, mobile and painless mass was about 2x3 cm in size and with bimanual palpation it was indiscriminated from the submandibular gland. Magnetic resonance imaging with contrast revealed a heterogeneous and minimally lobulated mass within the submandibular gland with clearly defined borders. Fine needle aspiration biopsy revealed a diagnosis of pleomorphic aden

Salivary gland malignancy with divergent differentiation: is it a teratocarcinosarcoma?

Four poorly differentiated malignant lesions occurred in a 60-year-old Chinese male in the nasal cavity, submandibular gland, a lymph node in the neck, and the mandible. These malignant lesions developed within an 8-year period and each showed distinctive histological features. Among these malignant lesions, the neoplasm in the submandibular gland presented variegated histological and immunohistochemical (IHC) features and posed a diagnostic challenge in interpretation. Based on microscopic and IHC findings, we believe the diagnosis of teratocarcinosarcoma is justified for the submandibular ne

Functional MR imaging of submandibular herniation of sublingual tissues through a gap of the mylohyoid muscle in two cases of submandibular "masses".

Except for neoplasms, in symptomatic patients with submandibular swellings, gaps of the mylohyoid muscle may be the cause of herniations of sublingual tissues, such as fat and/or the sublingual gland. In two patients with a submandibular swelling, MRI with standard sequences including contrast enhancement was performed to exclude a neoplastic lesion. In addition, we performed a trueFISP sequence during modified Valsalva's maneuver. In both patients, a neoplasm was excluded. Instead, the trueFISP sequence during the modified Valsalva's maneuver showed submandibular herniation of sublingual tiss

A comparative study between fine needle aspiration cytology findings and histopathological report of major salivary gland neoplasm in a tertiary hospital of Bangladesh.

Salivary gland tumours are relatively uncommon and most of the tumours arise from parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is advised preoperatively as diagnostic tool but sometimes found to shown both false positive and false negative results. This study was aimed to find out distribution of neoplasm of major salivary glands and also to explore the sensitivity and specificity of FNAC. The present cross sectional study was done in the Dept. of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, BSMMU from January 2007 to December 2008. A total number of 60 gender-matched patients with major sal

Metachronous bilateral submandibular gland metastases from carcinoma of the breast.

Metastases to the salivary glands from distant neoplasms are unusual, with most reported cases involving the parotid gland. Metastatic deposits in the submandibular gland are extremely rare with bilateral involvement not previously reported. We present the case of a patient with advanced breast carcinoma who has had metachronous involvement of both submandibular glands and review the literature on this subject.

Frequency and Histopathology by Site, Major Pathologies, Symptoms and Signs of Salivary Gland Neoplasms.

The frequency distribution of salivary gland neoplasms (SGNs) is, in decreasing order, parotid neoplasms, submandibular gland neoplasms, minor SGNs, and sublingual gland neoplasms. The larger the salivary gland (e.g. parotid), the more likely a neoplasm is benign, and the smaller the gland (e.g. minor salivary gland), the more likely the neoplasm is malignant. The majority of SGNs, benign and/or malignant, irrespective of site, present as a painless swelling or mass. Definitive symptoms and signs of salivary gland malignancy are the presence of named nerve palsy in anatomical proximity to the

[DIAGNOSTIC, CLINIC AND TREATMENT OF DISEASES OF SUBMANDIBULAR SALIVARY GLAND].

The purpose of the research was to study the structure of diseases of the submandibular salivary gland, to improve the diagnosis and effectiveness of the surgical treatment of patients with diseases of the submandibular salivary glands. A survey and treatment of 1094 patients with diseases of the submandibular salivary glands was performed. It was revealed that the most common disease of the submandibular salivary gland is calculous submaxillitis in the exacerbated and chronic stages of the inflammatory process (82.1%). Tumors and tumor-like formations of the submandibular glands account for 1

Submandibular gland excision: a five-year review.

Excision of the submandibular gland is a surgical procedure often undertaken. The procedure is the treatment of choice for patients with neoplasm of the submandibular gland and those with non-neoplastic submandibular disorders which are not controlled with conservative medical measures. Extirpation of the submandibular gland may also be undertaken for diagnostic purposes. This retrospective study of 93 consecutive patients who underwent excision of the submandibular gland in the Department of Otolaryngology, Singapore General Hospital over a five-year period was undertaken to study the indicat

Large-cell undifferentiated carcinoma of the submandibular gland.

Large-cell undifferentiated carcinoma (LCUC) arising in the submandibular gland is so rare that there have been only a few reported cases. We encountered a 65-year-old Japanese male, whose left submandibular gland was enlarged due to LCUC. Exenteration of the left submandibular gland together with selective neck dissection was performed, followed by postoperative radiotherapy. Current literature concerning the histopathological and clinical features of this neoplasm was reviewed.

Oncocytic sialolipoma of the submandibular gland.

Sialolipoma, a rare tumor of the salivary gland, is a recently described variant of salivary gland lipoma. Oncocytic sialolipoma was first described by Pusiol et al. in 2009. We report the case of an oncocytic sialolipoma of the submandibular gland in a 43-year-old female. Excision of the tumor was performed with preservation of the submandibular gland. The tumor had a thin, fibrous capsule and consisted of abundant adipose tissue, an oncocytic nodule, and scattered normal glandular structures surrounded by adipose tissue. Four cases of sialolipoma of the submandibular gland, including the pre
