UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to perform stress imaging of hindfoot inversion and eversion using tomosynthesis and to assess the subtalar joint range of motion (ROM) of healthy subjects. The subjects were 15 healthy volunteers with a mean age of 29.1 years. Coronal tomosynthesis stress imaging of the subtalar joint was performed in a total of 30 left and right ankles. A Telos stress device was used for the stress load, and the load was 150 N for both inversion and eversion. Tomographic images in which the posterior talocalcaneal joint could be confirmed on the neutral position imag

There has been extensive research and investigation into the subtalar joint (STJ), yet the biomechanics that relate to its anatomic function, especially instability after injury, are surrounded by controversy. With a mechanism of injury closely related to the classic inversion ankle sprain, chronic instability can result following trauma to the lateral ligamentous support network of either joint. Over the past decades there have been countless examples in the literature challenging the current standard of evaluation and treatment of the "subtalar sprain." New technologies have offered varied a

Arthrodesis of the ankle or subtalar joint for limb salvage in joint sepsis is extremely complicated, and produces a protracted course of management. A successful outcome is founded on the diligence of the surgeon in the preoperative evaluation, intraoperative technique, and postoperative care of the patient. Liberal consultation with infectious disease specialists, vascular, and plastic surgeons is recommended. Recognition of patient-specific comorbidities is essential to the selection of appropriate limb salvage candidates.

We have developed a method of measuring anterior displacement of the calcaneus on the talus in instability of the subtalar joint and have used the technique to demonstrate anterior instability in 50 patients (72 feet) showing a positive drawer sign. The angle of the posterior facet of the talus was also measured to assess the bony configuration. Our patients with subtalar joint instability could be divided into three categories. The first group had a history of trauma leading to ankle instability (26 cases), the second showed generalised joint laxity (10 cases) and the third were young females

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1985eng
Talocalcaneal articulations are relatively complex and functionally very important because they play a major role in the movements of inversion and eversion of the foot. Few reports on arthrography of the subtalar joints are available in the literature, and, similarly, little attention has been paid by arthroscopists to these joints. This preliminary study briefly defines the normal anatomy of the subtalar joints and describes a new technique of arthroscopic examination of the posterior subtalar joint. The distal lower extremities of six fresh cadavers were used in these experiments. All the s

Eleven children with clinical and radiographic findings suggestive of nonosseous subtalar coalition were found to have fibrous bridges at the time of surgery. A second group of 14 children with similar clinical and radiographic findings is being conservatively treated at present. This series of children suggests that a common site of nonosseous subtalar coalition is found posterior to the sustentaculum tali. Diagnosis of nonosseous coalition requires careful examination with computed tomography, with attention to subtle changes in the hindfoot, particularly posterior to the sustentaculum tali.

Subtalar joint biomechanics are primarily driven by the shape of the articulations with contributions from the surrounding soft tissues. The joint motion occurs about a single axis oriented medially and superiorly. Joint contact forces change during different stages of gait and are affected by hindfoot alignment and traumatic alterations to their normal anatomy. A valgus subtalar joint axis is likely a contributing, and perhaps primary, risk factor for progression to adult acquired flat foot. The subtalar joint axis also contributes to the clinical picture of a cavus foot and a special subset

BACKGROUND: The findings of research on the effectiveness of ankle taping for protection against ligament injury have been inconsistent, and the topic remains controversial. The precise orientation of the force vectors created by tension within the various tape strip components of an ankle taping procedure may be a critical factor influencing the degree of motion restraint that is provided. We hypothesized that the addition of the subtalar sling component to the widely recognized standard (Gibney) ankle taping procedure would enhance restraint of ankle motion. This was a controlled laboratory

Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion with an intramedullary nail (IMN) has been utilized for a myriad of indications in hindfoot and ankle reconstruction. However, some controversies remain on the optimal position of the hindfoot. Previous studies have reported on the potential medialization of the rearfoot during insertion of the IMN, but few studies have examined the potential affect on the subtalar joint. We performed the present cadaveric study in order to assess the involvement of a 12-mm IMN with the posterior facet of the calcaneus. A 3-mm guide wire (for a standard TTC IMN) was inserted in

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of full versus partial subperiosteal fibular bone graft for subtalar joint arthrodesis in patients with pes planovalgus foot deformity associated with residual polio myelitis. A prospective study was carried out on 16 patients with postpoliomyelitis valgus foot deformity secondary to invertor muscle paralysis. All patients were treated by peroneal tendon transfer to the medial metatarsals and subtalar extra-articular arthrodesis. In 12 patients, subperiosteal partial fibular graft was used, while four patients received a full fibular graft.

INTRODUCTION: Villonodular synovitis (SVN) is a rare benign pseudotumoral proliferation of the synovial joint, of unknown etiology. In general, it reaches the big joints, especially the knee. Localization at the subtalar level is extremely rare, with only a few cases published in the literature.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of an SVN of the subtalar in a 60-year-old patient without particular histories, who consulted for a swelling of the external border of the right foot evolving for 2 years. Biology, as well as the standard radiographs, was without anomalies. The diagnosis was evoked on

The clinical presentation of a monoarticular, red, hot, and swollen joint has many possible diagnoses, including septic arthritis, which is 1 of the most devastating. The morbidity associated with this pathologic process involves permanent joint damage and the potential for progression to systemic illness and, even, mortality. The common risk factors for joint sepsis include a history of rheumatoid arthritis, previous joint surgery, joint prosthesis, intravenous drug abuse, alcoholism, diabetes, previous intra-articular steroid use, and cutaneous ulceration. The diagnosis is primarily determin

The technique of arthroscopy is, at the present time, available for the investigation of the subtalar joint. In this preliminary report, the relevant anatomy and technique are reviewed. Illustrative cases are presented to review some of its applications. It is the conclusion of the author that arthroscopy of the subtalar joint may be of value in the following situations: assessment of the articular cartilage in suspected cases of degenerative, rheumatoid, or infectious arthritis; evaluation of chronic pain syndrome in the hindfoot after injuries; and biopsy of the synovial lining, breakage of

BACKGROUND: An advantage of total ankle replacement (TAR) compared to ankle fusion is that by maintaining motion, the occurrence of hypermobility of adjacent joints may be prevented. This could affect the development of symptomatic subtalar joint osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of subtalar joint fusion and the progression of subtalar joint OA following TAR.
METHODS: Secondary subtalar joint fusion rate was determined from a cohort of 941 patients receiving primary TAR between 2000 and 2016. The indication for fusion, the time interval from primary TAR

A rapidly progressing calcified mass was found in the left sinus tarsi in a 12-year-old female after a trivial ankle sprain. The lesion mimicked an aggressive lesion clinically and radiographically. Ultrasound-guided biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of a synovial chondroma. Excision of the tumor and partial synovectomy were performed. The histologic diagnosis was a solitary synovial osteochondroma. The condition had not recurred after a follow-up period of 12 months.

Posteromedial subtalar (PMST) coalitions are a recently described anatomic subtype of tarsal coalitions. We compared with clinical patient-based outcomes of patients with PMST and standard middle facet (MF) coalitions who had undergone surgical excision of their coalition. The included patients had undergone surgical excision of a subtalar tarsal coalition, preoperative computed tomography (CT), and patient-based outcomes measures after surgery (including the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society [AOFAS] scale and University of California, Los Angeles [UCLA], activity score). Blinded ana

The talonavicular (TN) joint and the three subtalar (ST) joints are linked anatomically and functionally. Together they form the subtalar joint complex, where movement occurs between the calcaneopedal unit (CPU) (entire foot except the talus) and the talotibiofibular unit (talus held tightly by the ankle mortise). Many are unaware of the TN joint's dual membership: it is a component of the subtalar joint complex (talocalcaneonavicular joint) and also the transverse tarsal joint (with the calcaneal-cuboid joint). The anatomy of the articulating surfaces, movement of the CPU when unloaded, shift

Chronic ankle and subtalar joint (STJ) instability is a common clinical entity and the physician must be able to determine the exact pathologic condition for proper treatment. There are many diagnostic techniques that can be used to evaluate the ankle joint and STJ. These diagnostic techniques do not take the place of a proper patient history taking. Appropriate and aggressive rehabilitation should be attempted in all cases of chronic ankle and subtalar instability before electing surgical reconstruction.
