Anterior Open Bite Treated With Palatal Crib and Myofunctional Therapy: A Case Report.

The most prevalent oral habit and one of the most often habitual behavioral patterns in preschool-aged children is thumb-sucking. This behavior is crucial to the development of malocclusion and must be addressed carefully since it may cause a secondary tongue thrust that worsens the issue. Developing an effective treatment plan requires determining the underlying cause, which may include psychological, physiological, and or anatomical factors. Overall prevention of behavior needs to be planned for successful outcomes. One such device for treating tongue-thrusting and thumb-sucking habits is th

The effect of music-reinforced nonnutritive sucking on state of preterm, low birthweight infants experiencing heelstick.

This study examined the physiologic and behavioral effects of music-reinforced nonnutritive sucking (NNS) for preterm, low birthweight (LBW) infants experiencing heelstick. Subjects were 60 infants, age 32 to 37 weeks post conceptional age in a neonatal intensive care unit. Infants were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: pacifier-activated lullaby (PAL), pacifier-only, and no-contact. Experimental infants were provided the Sondrex PAL System, which plays music contingent on infant sucking. Pacifier-only infants did not receive music reinforcement for sucking, and no-contact in

Feeding responses to free-flow formula in term and preterm infants.

OBJECTIVES: Although introducing freely flowing formula into the infant's mouth is a common feeding practice, its effect on feeding behavior is largely unknown. We evaluated the effects of free flow of formula from the nipple on infant feeding activity (sucking, swallowing, ingestion rate) and documented potential adverse behaviors such as cough, restless behavior, drooling, apnea, and bradycardia. METHODS: We studied 13 preterm and 7 term infants. During a feeding, bottle pressure was adjusted every 2 to 3 minutes to increase or decrease free flow from the nipple. RESULTS: Increase in free

An unusual type of sucking habit in a patient with cleft lip and palate.

Digit sucking, a form of non-nutritive sucking, is a habit of concern to specialist in various fields such as psychiatrist, psychologist, pediatricians, pediatric dentists, orthodontist, speech pathologist and plastic surgeon. The habits have harmful unbalanced pressures to be born by the immature highly malleable alveolar ridges. Sucking behaviors have long been recognized to affect occlusion and dental arch characteristics. As early as 1870s, Campbell and Chandler recognized that prolonged finger or thumb sucking habits had deleterious effects on certain occlusal traits including anterior op

Oral feeding challenges of infants of diabetic mothers.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of diabetes before or during pregnancy can increase perinatal mortality and morbidities. It is well known an infant of a diabetic mother (IDM) may experience complications such as macrosomia, hypoglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome, cardiac anomalies, and other abnormalities of organogenesis. Medical providers including physicians, nurses, and speech therapists have experienced challenges with helping IDMs orally feed. Challenges with oral feeding can lead to prolonged hospital stays and placement of supplemental feeding devices. The etiology of an IDM's oral feedin

Apparent covariation between child habit disorders: effects of successful treatment for thumb sucking on untargeted chronic hair pulling.

We evaluated the effects of aversive taste treatment of thumb sucking on untreated trichotillomania (habitual hair pulling) in two children who chronically pulled their hair and sucked their thumbs. A combination of withdrawal and nonconcurrent multiple baseline designs showed that, concomitant with the successful treatment of thumb sucking, hair pulling was also eliminated. The results suggest an efficient method for changing behaviors that are difficult to treat directly.

Cephalometric Assessment of Dentoskeletal Characteristics in Children with Digit-sucking Habit.

BACKGROUND: Nonnutritive sucking can turn into a continuous behavior practiced unconsciously, leading to a deleterious oral habit. Digit-sucking habits are an important etiological factor for malocclusion. AIM: To investigate the effect of the digit-sucking habit on dentofacial structures by employing a cephalometric analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Selected 120 children were grouped as 60 with the digit-sucking habit and 60 without the digit-sucking habit in the age ranging between 6 and 12 years without gender discrimination. All were subjected to the standardized cephalometric technique,

Ingestion, suckling, and the problem of identity: using criteria in the classification of ingestive behavior.

The data reported by Nizhnikov et al. [Newborn rats first suckling experience: taste differentiation and suckling plasticity (2002)] do not support the authors' claim that they shed light on suckling mechanisms. A number of accepted criteria for identifying suckling are discussed in this review. The ingestion of various fluids through a plastic tube by neonatal or other rats does not meet any of these criteria. Thus, while the data reported by Nizhnikov et al. [Newborn rats first suckling experience: taste differentiation and suckling plasticity (2002)] are of interest from the perspective of

Syringe Filling of a High-Concentration mAb Formulation: Experimental, Theoretical, and Computational Evaluation of Filling Process Parameters That Influence the Propensity for Filling Needle Clogging.

This article summarizes experimental, theoretical, and computational assessments performed to understand the effect of filling and suck-back cycle factors on fluid behaviors that increase the propensity for filling needle clogging. Product drying under ambient conditions decreased considerably when the liquid front was altered from a droplet or meniscus at the needle tip to a point approximately 5 mm inside the needle. Minimizing the variation in size of product droplet formed after the fill cycle is critical to achieve a uniform meniscus height after the suck-back cycle. Several factors were

Effectiveness of Non-Nutritive Sucking on Sucking Performance in Preterm Infants: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Non-nutritive sucking (NNS) is commonly employed to assist in the development of preterm infants facing feeding challenges. The effectiveness of NNS interventions on sucking performance (suction and expression/compression component of sucking) in this population has not yet to be systematically explored. AIMS: To review the literature on the effects of NNS on sucking performance in preterm infants. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across five databases, encompassing publications from the inception of these databases until July 2024. The studies included only random

A role of periodontal sensation in development of rhythmical chewing in dogs.

The sucking period of puppies was prolonged by 7 days and the start of rhythmical chewing was delayed to more than 50 postnatal days. In puppies having erupted teeth but no periodontal sensation due to nerve degeneration, chewing rhythm formation was delayed by 20 days. The rhythm of chewing was not affected by extraction of all primary teeth after rhythmical chewing had completed. These results suggest that afferent impulses from the periodontal mechanoreceptors play a role in the chewing rhythm formation at transition from sucking to chewing behavior in new born puppies.

Collaborative management of severe periodontal-endodontic lesion with intense lip sucking: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lip behaviors can lead to maxillofacial developmental disorders such as anterior open bite, posterior crossbite, increased overjet, and a higher risk of developing a Class II malocclusion. However, lip-sucking, a behavior often underreported and overlooked, may adversely affect the periodontal health of permanent teeth in adolescents under extreme conditions if not promptly identified and managed. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a unique case of an 11-year-old boy with a severe periodontal-endodontic lesion on tooth 32, caused by prolonged, high-frequency, and high-intensity lip suck

Incorrect orofacial functions until 5 years of age and their association with posterior crossbite.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to heredity, sucking habits, impaired nasal breathing, and atypical swallowing patterns are considered important factors in the etiology of posterior crossbite. The purpose of this study was to assess irregular orofacial functions to determine their correlation with posterior crossbite. METHODS: Two hundred forty-three children were examined at the ages 3, 4, and 5. Irregular orofacial functions and morphologic traits of malocclusion were clinically evaluated. The prevalence of posterior crossbite and the relationship with incorrect orofacial functions was determined

Nipple properties affect sensorimotor integration during bottle feeding in an infant pig model.

Infant feeding is a critical neurological milestone in development defined by the coordination of muscles, peripheral nerves, and brainstem nuclei. In infants, milk flow rate is often limited to improve feeding performance without treating the underlying deficiencies in the sucking and swallowing processes. Modification of the neuromotor response via sensory information from the nipple during bottle feeding is an unexplored avenue for physiology-based interventions. In this study, we assessed how differences in nipple hole size and nipple stiffness affect sucking muscle activation and subseque

Infants Sucking Pattern Identification Using Machine-Learned Computational Modeling.

Breastfeeding involves a complex coordination of swallowing, breathing, and sucking, with the infant's sucking proficiency being crucial for adequate nutrient intake. However, real-time assessment of milk intake is difficult, and issues with sucking often become apparent after the infant shows signs of nutrient deficiency. Traditional assessments by clinicians rely on the expertise and subjective judgment of healthcare professionals, enabling personalized evaluations. In this research, we introduce a novel approach to identifying sucking patterns by leveraging data collected from infants durin
