Sweet preference, sugar addiction and the familial history of alcohol dependence: shared neural pathways and genes.

Contemporary research has shown that a high number of alcohol-dependent and other drug-dependent individuals have a sweet preference, specifically for foods with a high sucrose concentration. Moreover, both human and animal studies have demonstrated that in some brains the consumption of sugar-rich foods or drinks primes the release of euphoric endorphins and dopamine within the nucleus accumbens, in a manner similar to some drugs of abuse. The neurobiological pathways of drug and "sugar addiction" involve similar neural receptors, neurotransmitters, and hedonic regions in the brain. Craving,

Third-generation ultralong-term latent heat storage glass based on a sugar alcohol mixture.

Long-term thermal storage can decarbonize heat utilization by resolving mismatches between heat supply and demand. However, common heat storage materials cannot store energy for long periods. Here, we report an ultralong-term latent heat storage "glass" based on a ternary eutectic sugar alcohol mixture. The as-prepared material exhibits a solid-liquid phase change and glass transition at 423 and 289 K, respectively, with heat release via cold crystallization at 346 K. Remarkably, the glass transition temperature increases to 313 K after aging at ambient temperature for 12 hours due to structur

Breaking the Immiscibility Barrier: A Mechanochemical Approach to Enable the Direct Glycosylation of Native Sugars with Hydrophobic Aliphatic Alcohols.

Reactions involving both hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules present a significant challenge due to the difficulties associated with finding solvents that are capable of effectively accommodating reactants with contrasting solubility properties. Solvent-free conditions offer a potential alternative, albeit that under conventional neat conditions, immiscible reactants often remain poorly mixed at the molecular level, resulting in low reactivity. Here, we demonstrate that mechanochemistry could potentially offer a practical solution to overcome this immiscibility issue. Specifically, we discov

Prediction of carbon dioxide solubility in sugar-water-alcohol solutions at high pressure for application to sparkling drinks.

In the beverage industry, the CO2 pressure and dissolved CO2 reached in their packaged beverage play an important role. In this regard, the work aims to develop a thermodynamic model for the prediction of the phase equilibrium behavior of quaternary CO2-sugar-water-alcohol solutions up to high pressures. The Perturbed Hard Sphere Chain (PHSC) equation of state (EoS) has been used to predict the solubility of CO2 in glucose-water-alcohol solutions. Glucose molecules have been modeled as a chain-like molecule with ten association sites. Cross-association between CO2, glucose, and water molecules

Reduction in sugar intake after the introduction of minimum unit pricing for alcohol in Scotland: a difference-in-differences analysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, Scotland introduced a minimum unit pricing (MUP) policy to remove very-low-cost alcoholic drinks from the market in an effort to reduce the adverse impacts of excessive alcohol consumption. Any increased spending on alcohol may be associated with reduced food and lower diet quality. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the relationship between MUP and dietary energy, nutrients, and diet quality. METHODS: Difference-in-differences analyses were conducted on household-level purchase data, collected by Kantar Worldpanel (KWP) over 53 wk before and 54 wk after the implem

Production of phenols from a cyclic sugar alcohol in high-temperature water over a charcoal-supported platinum catalyst.

Biomass is a useful carbon-neutral feedstock for the production of various chemicals. The conversion of cyclic sugar alcohols to aromatic compounds can be expected to promote greater use of biomass resources. Here, we examined the conversion of myo-inositol, a cyclic sugar alcohol present in high amounts in rice bran, to aromatic compounds over supported metal catalysts in high-temperature water. We confirmed that myo-inositol could be converted into phenolic compounds such as phenol and catechol over several charcoal-supported metal catalysts in high-temperature water at 250 °C; the yield of

The Novel Sugar Alcohol D-Threitol Alleviates Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Modulates Gut Microbiota in Mice.

Conventional therapies for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are often associated with adverse effects, driving the search for natural alternatives with high safety profiles. This study evaluates the preventive and metabolic‑regulatory potential of D-threitol, a novel sugar alcohol synthesized by engineered Yarrowia lipolytica, in a high-fat diet and streptozotocin-induced T2DM mice model. In vitro, D-threitol acted as a competitive inhibitor of α-glucosidase. After eight weeks of oral administration (500 mg/kg/day), treated mice exhibited reduced weight gain and fat accumulation, improved gluco

Evidence that hedonic response toward sugar in alcohol use disorder is mediated by antidepressant use and does not constitute an endophenotype.

BACKGROUND: Literature highlighted a higher sweet preference among patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) that may act as an endophenotypical vulnerability. However, results remain heterogenous and seldom information is available regarding possible origins, such as hedonic abilities, reward sensitivity or impulsivity. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aims to explore the relationship between AUD and sweet preference as well as its endophenotypical properties. METHODS: Ninety-two participants were divided into three groups (36 patients with AUD, 29 healthy controls and 27 healthy first-

Room temperature synthesis of 3D-nanocrystalline graphitic carbon from biomass-derived sugars, alcohols, and polyphenolic compounds.

Nanocrystalline carbon materials exhibit promising potential for sustainable and high-performance applications in electronics, energy storage, and environmental technologies. While sugars are abundant and renewable, converting them to graphitic carbon usually requires high temperature treatment. Here, we present a groundbreaking approach for synthesizing nanocrystalline carbon from readily available sugars such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose at ambient pressure and temperature. This novel method involves electrochemical reduction on a negatively charged Ag surface coupled with intermolecula

The mechanism of reducing the oil content of fried instant noodles by adding sugar alcohol: microstructure, surface properties and molecular structure.

Sugar alcohols are characterized by anti-caries properties, low glycemic response, low calorie value and non-participation in the Maillard reaction. Our preliminary experimental demonstrated that erythritol (ET), xylitol (XT), and lactitol (LT) significantly reduce the oil content of fried instant noodles, though the mechanism was unclear. This study therefore aimed to elucidate how these sugar alcohols reduce oil content by examining the alterations in oil distribution, pore characteristics, and molecular structures of starch and protein from macro-, micro-, and molecular levels. Diastereoselective 1,3-dipolar intramolecular nitrone olefin cycloaddition (INOC) reaction of a sugar-derived allyl alcohol: Synthesis of functionalized aminocyclopentitols.

The DIBAL-H reduction of the Baylis-Hillman sugar adduct, obtained from 3-O-benzyl-1,2-isopropylidene-α-D-xylo-pentodialdo-1,4-furanose yielded trisubstituted alkenes by eliminating the β-hydroxyl group. Subsequently, the hydrolysis of the isopropylidene acetal to the corresponding hemiacetal was reacted with N-benzyl hydroxylamine hydrochloride to generate the nitrone, which underwent diastereoselective intramolecular 1,3-dipolar nitrone olefin cycloaddition (INOC) to give an isoxazolidine skeleton. The concomitant reductive cleavage of the N-O bond and benzyl group of the fused isoxazolidine
