Defenses and morality: Adam Smith, Sigmund Freud, and contemporary psychoanalysis.

In this paper we follow the development and transmission of moral learning from Adam Smith's impartial spectator to Sigmund Freud's superego and then to contemporary psychoanalysis. We argue that defenses are an integral component in the acquisition of any moral system. Elaborating on this argument, we assert that there is a progression from defensive systems that are "closed" to defensive systems that are "open," as defined in a recent work by Novick and Novick. The former system is "static, avoids reality, and is characterized by power dynamics, sadomasochism, and omnipotent defense." The la

Antitheses and the obsessive-compulsive.

The characteristic "style" of the obsessive-compulsive is examined and is seen to be marked by an antithetical quality. The major defense mechanisms used--undoing, isolation, and reaction formation--al involve opposites: contradictory acts following each other, the keeping apart of ambivalent feeling states, and the turning of wishes into their opposites. The cognitive modes of the obsessive-compulsive are marked by dichotomies: sharply focused attention which misses essential points and a non-inclusive all-inclusiveness. The obsessive's regression to the anal phase produces ambivalent emotion

Aggression: its relation to desire and self-interest.

Aggression continues to be a problematic, ill-defined concept for most contemporary analysts. Questions about the nature and origin of aggression remain unanswered. On the one hand, aggression is conceived of as an instinctual drive; on the other, it is thought to originate as an instrument of reaction to external sources of frustration and environmental failures to meet developmental needs. Aggression has also been dichotomized as either the benign activity of assertiveness, or the darker destructive force of hostility, believed by many to arise from separate motivational systems. There is a

Assessing progress in analysis interminable.

A case study is provided of a schizoid patient in her mid-sixties who in a lengthy analysis had made significant clinical improvement. The treating analyst's impression of clinical improvement was independently verified through systematic analysis of transcripts of audiotapes of thirty-six sessions over a four-year period of treatment. The patient showed significant improvement on measures of character pathology, object relations, mentalization, and superego anxiety. The results suggest that some patients with entrenched character pathology who seem to be in analysis interminable may still mak

Suicide by Proxy: A Psychoanalytic Hypothesis Illustrated by Three Forensic Case Reports.

This paper proposes the hypothesis of Suicide by Proxy, a psychodynamic formulation suggesting that certain acts of homicide may represent displaced manifestations of suicidal intent. Drawing on three retrospectively analysed forensic psychiatric cases involving individuals with psychotic disorders and documented suicidal ideation, this study illustrates how, from a psychoanalytic perspective, unresolved Oedipal dynamics, harsh punitive superego processes and internalised aggression may contribute to homicidal behaviour. The cases are interpreted as compatible with the hypothesis that, when di

Problems in Freud's Psychology of Women.

Freud's ideas on the development and psychological characteristics of girls and women, though laden with rich clinical and theoretical discoveries and achievements, appear to have been significantly flawed by the influence of traditional patriarchal and evolutionary values. This influence is evident in certain questionable presuppositions, logical errors and inconsistencies, suspensions of intensive inquiry, underemphasis on certain developmental variables, and confusions between observations, definitions, and value preferences. Under three headings-The Problem of Women's Morality and Objectiv

Recrimination in the analytic situation. A hypothesis about its influence on psychoanalytical groups.

This paper deals with certain distortions in communication generated by mutual recrimination that is the result of disturbances in the ideal agencies of both parties. Although the ideal ego, superego and ego ideal participate equally in reproach, it is the latter which is the most decisive. In clinical experience, recrimination may easily colour the analytic dialogue. In such cases, interpretation loses its sense of clarification and another type of dialogue replaces it. There, words are used to take possession of the other, for its autonomy is a threat to the static character of the pathology

Dynamic and structural features of a case of compulsive neurosis as revealed in dreams.

Several examples of the manifest dreams reported by a patient with a compulsive neurosis are presented. An outstanding feature of the dreams was the sudden shift of the dreamer's self-representation from the role of criminal to the role of policeman. This shift is thought to parallel the oscillation between unconscious instinctual gratification and conscious attempts at reparation which is the main dynamic feature of the compulsive neurosis in waking life. The shift of orientation of the self reflects the operation of early defense mechanisms against the sadistic impulse. It also portrays grap

The mutating preconscious archetype in present-day ecological conditions.

Competition is an important force behind evolution in present-day ecological conditions, its intensity varying according to the organisms' expectations vis-à-vis resources available. On the other hand, the role of mutation in the evolutionary process can hardly be underestimated: Leading to the change of the preconsciously functioning archetype, mutation makes it impossible for the ego to realize its image. This is a consequence of the clash between the mutated, preconsciously functioning archetype and the system of ethical and moral norms functioning in the collective superego of a given popu

Why eating-disordered patients resist sex therapy: a response to Simpson and Ramberg.

Patients with eating disorders struggle with a plethora of sexual dysfunctions and yet are found to resist sex therapy interventions that might be particularly helpful to them. This paper suggests that patients resist sex therapy interventions because they have fragile self-structures. Usually plagued by more than one additional DSM-III-R diagnosis, the eating-disordered patient's treatment is usually complex, and it is difficult for the patient to focus on one specific problematic area. Possessing punitive superego structures, they are also quite critical of their sexual responses. Tending to

The sense of defect.

The sense of defect, physical or psychological, is here regarded as a fantasy, a compromise formation, rather than an actual defect existing somewhere in the body, or in some psychological structure. It need not correlate with the reality to an external observer of physical or psychological disability. Psychoanalytic emphasis is directed to the motivations for the persistence of this sense of defect, rather than primarily to etiology (trauma) or genetic history. Accurate perception and evaluation, having been interdicted during childhood, is avoided with the magical hope that thereby one will

Toward a unified conception of the origins of sexual and social deviancy in young persons.

This paper is based on the empirical evidence that social and sexual deviancy in young persons often succeed on one another, alternate repeatedly, or occur concomitantly. The role of the superego and the relationship of acting out and symptomatic acts to both conditions are explored. States of excitement, tension, and discharge in young persons are described. The scanty but important literature on excitement is reviewed, and the role of this affect in the causation of both deviances is examined in some detail. The occurrence of early fantasies associated with (primary) excitement on a backgrou

They shall wear fringes.

The multiple functions of clothes include utility, protection, rivalry, disguise, camouflage, display for seduction purposes, aggression, totemism, and status. Here the focus is on a decorative and distinctive hierarchical aspect of ancient dress, the tsitsit or fringes, whose original function is long absent, but that has endured for 3,500 years in Judaism. The beginning of their use beyond the totemic appears related to issues of changing identity from slavery to liberty, endowing noble status, exhibitionism, a symbol of identity, identification with the aggressor, a talisman, and potency. A psychosocial study of 'self-immolation' in India.

The phenomenon of self-immolation was studied in 22 young people, mostly students, who had indulged in this act to protest against the decision of the Government of India to enlarge the scope of reservations in jobs and educational institutions. Within a short span of time of arriving at one of the two treatment centres after attempting self-immolation, the subjects were interviewed and assessed on a semi-structured interview schedule to elicit sociodemographic and attitudinal data. The subjects were also rated on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Pierce's Suicide Intent Scale, the Superego

On a type of heterosexuality, and the fluidity of object relations.

This paper delineates a form of heterosexuality whose underlying psychological structure resembles that of perversions. It is characterized by: idealization of instinctual processes, whereby the ego subordinates the object to the actualization of the instinctual event itself; heightened narcissism in an otherwise neurotic ego organization; multiple intrapsychic uses of the object; a special kind of defensive organization; an experienced victory over the superego and associated elevation of certain aspects of the ego ideal; and a resultant alteration in the nature of close interpersonal relatio

From acting to communicating: the analysis of a boy with a pathological organization.

The author presents the analysis of an 8 year-old boy prematurely born after a high-risk pregnancy, then hospitalized for two weeks. He was never breastfed and presented vomiting, intense activity and inadequate behaviour as symptoms. His highly dysfunctional family is composed of a non-productive father and a homely, though aggressive, mother. The patient displayed a rigid defensive structure with perverse aspects and a cruel superego. His constant interest in magical characters frequently disguises an avoidance of reality. By means of transference interpretations, a trustworthy link with the

In a time when manic-depressive disease became bipolar disorder, and it is conceptualized and treated almost as a fully medical illness, such as epilepsy, we found worth returning to some psychodynamic aspects underlying this condition. To Abraham, mania is the liberation from suffering imposed by the reality principle For Freud, mania becomes a leak from the ego face a tyrannical superego (the encounter of ego and the ego ideal). The Oedipus complex revisited: Oedipus abandoned, Oedipus adopted.

The author considers that the Oedipus of Sophocles' drama, who kills his biological father and marries his biological mother, is an illustration of the failure to work through the complex named after him. She draws attention to the contrast between the obscurity that surrounds the hero's adoptive parents and the notoriety of their biological counterparts arguing that the former are equally important in the universal oedipal fantasy. In her view the fact that Oedipus has two sets of parents--abandoning and adopting respectively--is significant in that the resulting dichotomisation of the parent
