Biomechanical properties of the superior sagittal sinus-bridging vein complex.

Finite element models (FEM) of the head are frequently used to simulate traumatic brain injury, leading to a better understanding of brain injury tolerance. The strength of a FEM of the head is dependent on the use of correct material characteristics, experimentally derived for each intracranial tissue, including parasagittal bridging veins (BV). These veins are prone to rupture in their subdural portion upon head impact, giving rise to an acute subdural hematoma (ASDH). The junction of these veins to the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) has been described as an area with distinct vein wall archi…

Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis with infarction in sickle cell trait.

An adolescent female with sickle cell trait presented with acute neurologic deterioration during treatment for pseudotumor cerebri. Cranial computed tomography, initially normal, subsequently revealed multiple hemorrhagic infarctions. Suspected superior sagittal sinus thrombosis was confirmed by cerebral angiography. Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis associated with sickle cell trait is exceedingly rare, and the accompanying increased intracranial pressure may require aggressive management.

Benign intracranial hypertension, monoclonal gammopathy, and superior sagittal sinus thrombosis.

We report a case of benign intracranial hypertension associated with monoclonal gammopathy. The course was complicated by superior sagittal sinus thrombosis which we believe to be related to acetazolamide therapy. Response to volume expansion with colloid and crystalloid solutions was dramatic.

Management of Meningioma invading Superior Sagittal Sinus: Surgery and Radiosurgery.

Parasagittal meningiomas that invade the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) pose a dual hazard: recurrence if tumour is left behind, and venous infarction if a functional sinus or bridging vein is compromised. The 2021 European Association of Neuro‑Oncology guideline recommends observation for incidental, asymptomatic suspected meningiomas and surgery for growing or symptomatic tumours, while stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or fractionated radiotherapy may complement or substitute for surgery in selected settings. Contemporary series support invasion‑graded decision‑making radical resection with ve…

Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis complicating typhoid Fever in a teenager.

Cerebral venous sinus (sinovenous) thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare life-threatening disorder in childhood that is often misdiagnosed. CSVT encompasses cavernous sinus thrombosis, lateral sinus thrombosis, and superior sagittal sinus thrombosis (SSST). We present an adolescent girl who was well until two weeks earlier when she had a throbbing frontal headache and fever with chills; she later had dyspnoea, jaundice, melena stool, multiple seizures, nuchal rigidity, and monoparesis of the right lower limb a day before admission. Urine test for Salmonella typhi Vi antigen was positive, and Widal react…

Re-occlusion of the superior sagittal sinus after surgical recanalisation.

A 24-year-old woman was struck on the head by a hammer. Because of early signs and symptoms of intercranial hypertension, she underwent surgery for elevation of the depressed fragments which was compressing the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). After operation, the intracranial pressure (ICP) once decreased, but it gradually increased again. After hypothermia and barbiturate therapy, she recovered fully except for partial visual field defect due to brain contusion. A carotid angiogram 28 days after injury revealed complete occlusion of the whole SSS with good collateral circulation. After brain e…

Flow quantification in the superior sagittal sinus using magnetic resonance.

To date, the intracerebral veins and venous sinuses have not been amenable to noninvasive study. We describe a magnetic resonance (MR) technique using "bolus tracking" for rapid imaging and measurement of cerebral venous flow. We specifically applied the technique to the superior sagittal sinus, but it can be used for evaluation of other cerebral venous structures. In 10 healthy subjects and 21 patients referred for MR brain studies, mean flow was 420 ml/min. There was a significant inverse correlation between blood flow and age. There were dynamic changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) during h…

The Confluence of the Superior Sagittal Sinus and the Vein of Trolard: A Radiographic Study.

BACKGROUND: The vein of Trolard (VoT), the largest superior superficial anastomotic vein, demonstrates variable anatomy at its confluence with the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). This confluence is classically located near the marginal sulcus but can occur anteriorly, increasing venous infarction risk. We aimed to characterize VoT displacement relative to the marginal sulcus, evaluating hemispheric asymmetry, sex, age and the effect of sagittal pathology. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis using MRI. VoT entry sites were measured relative to the marginal sulcus by two…

Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis as a treatment complication of nonsyndromic Kleeblattschädel.

A patient with nonsyndromic Kleeblattschädel, who underwent a craniotomy involving a constricting calvarial ring and frontal calvarial remodeling, developed a superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. The superior sagittal sinus venous outflow was obstructed as a consequence of the rapid brain expansion, along with a conflict of a remaining posterior bone crest. A successful second operation was performed to remove the posterior bone crest and facilitate the venous outflow. Meticulous preoperative planning should be carried out before addressing this complex craniofacial deformity.

Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Cerebral venous thrombosis is a rare cause of focal neurological damage in patients with SLE. We describe a patient with SLE who presented with a focal neurological deficit and subsequently developed increased intracranial pressure. A superior sagittal sinus thrombosis was diagnosed by MRI. The association between SLE and superior sagittal sinus thrombosis is discussed. Early diagnosis is essential because treatment leads to a positive clinical outcome.

Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

A 41-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was admitted to the hospital because of a recent onset of disorientation and memor … th local vascular thrombosis were seen. In addition, there was extensive, partial thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus and distal superficial cortical veins unassociated with cerebral hemorrhage or infarction, lymphoma, or involvement with opportunistic organisms. Retrospective review of radiographic studies demonstrated the classic "empty delta" sign. To our knowle …

[Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis is the newborn--diagnosis by computerized tomography].

The case of a newborn with a superior sagittal sinus thrombosis is reported. The clinical symptoms are difficult to differentiate from other cerebral conditions in the neonatal period. Sudden appearance of signs of raised intracranial pressure, however, is characteristic. Main predisposing factors are infection, dehydration and polycythemia. Before computed tomography (CT) became available, the diagnosis could be made only by means of invasive examination techniques. Today CT, in many cases, allows a rapid diagnosis of this condition.

A developmental theory of the superior sagittal sinus(es) in craniopagus twins.

INTRODUCTION: Based on the study of the vascular anatomy of craniopagus twins, and particularly that of Ladan and Laleh, a theory is hypothesised regarding the embryological formation of the sagittal sinuses. THEORY AND DISCUSSION: The superior sagittal sinus develops in contact with the calvarium bone within the inter-periosteal leptomeningeal space following a signal from the midline of the telencephalic vesicle derived from a single prosencephalic one. The position of the falx cerebri and most likely in the deepest part, the corpus callosum, points to the position of this midline.

Spontaneous chronic subdural haematoma due to hypoplastic rostral superior sagittal sinus.

The superior sagittal sinus (SSS) is a midline structure of the superficial cerebral venous system that drains the anterior cerebral hemispheres. Hypoplasia of the rostral SSS is a known variant, although associated complications are rare. A woman in her 30s presented for evaluation of a symptomatic left-sided acoustic neuroma and was found to have an incidental chronic subdural haematoma (SDH) over the left frontoparietal convexity without trauma or precipitating event. The SDH expanded on serial imaging and the patient eventually underwent left-sided frontoparietal craniotomy for haematoma e…
