Elective arthroplasty on "high-risk" calendar dates: no evidence for worse outcomes in 43,000 procedures.

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding the timing of elective surgery remain common among patients and may influence surgical scheduling. Superstition-associated calendar dates such as Friday the 13th are frequently perceived as "high-risk" time points, yet evidence regarding their impact on arthroplasty outcomes is lacking. This study investigated whether primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) performed on these dates are associated with differences in revision risk, mortality, or procedure frequency. METHODS: A nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted usin

Development of the Drake Beliefs about Chance inventory.

The present research describes the development and validation of a cognitive assessment instrument, the Drake Beliefs about Chance (DBC) inventory, designed to determine and quantify erroneous beliefs about games of chance. Principal components analyses showed that the DBC assesses two primary dimensions, Illusion of Control and Superstition. Correlation analyses showed that scores on these two dimensions are related to higher frequency of gambling behaviors in both adults from the general population and clients from gambling treatment centers. Of the two sets of erroneous beliefs, Illusion of

Patients then seek orthodox care when complications develop. Patients also have difficulty accepting ablative treatment when indicated. OBJECTIVE: To present an usual case of bilateral upper limb burns caused by lightning and complicated by refusal to receive orthodox treatment. CASE REPORT: A 22 year old woman was struck by lightning while asleep. Instead of going to hospital, she was

Western jurisprudence and criminal justice systems as superstitious belief.

Western punitive justice systems persist despite weak evidence that they reduce crime. We argue that they function as WEIRD cultural superstitions: punishment intuitively feels effective even when it fails. Drawing on Singh's framework, historical evidence of punishment's dominance origins, and our own experiments, we show how subjective selection sustains maladaptive punitive institutions - ultimately raising the question, intuitively effective to whom?

Assessment of Public Stigma, Mental Health Literacy, and Help-Seeking Intentions Based on Different Dimensions of Obsessive-Compulsive Content: A Study of the Spanish Mental Health-Naïve Population.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive (OC) disorder is a debilitating disorder with a high delay in help-seeking that could be associated with two barriers that may differ between OC content dimensions: public stigma and mental health literacy. OBJECTIVES: We aim to describe and analyze the differences among OC content dimensions in public stigma, social distance desire, mental health literacy, and help-seeking intention in a sample of the mental health-naïve population. METHODS: A total of 487 participants from the Spanish community with no previous knowledge of or experience with OCD were rando

[The horror story--a contribution of horror literature to psychoanalysis].

Using the example of the vampire motif origin and psychic function of the ghost-story in context of the pertaining historical situation are presented. A comparison to the development and function of night-mares is drawn.--The vampire motif in Europe originally developed at the end of the Middle Ages. As with the collective madness of witch persecution it was a superstition which was in fact supported by the church of this time. The belief in vampires was used for splitting of, projection and acting-out of taboo aggressive, oral and sexual drives. Although the era of Englightment quenched this

Bacteria and vampirism in cinema.

A vampire is a non-dead and non-alive chimerical creature, which, according to various folklores and popular superstitions, feeds on blood of the living to draw vital force. Vampires do not reproduce by copulation, but by bite. Vampirism is thus similar to a contagious disease contracted by intravascular inoculation with a suspected microbial origin. In several vampire films, two real bacteria were staged, better integrated than others in popular imagination: Yersinia pestis and Treponema pallidum. Bacillus vampiris was created for science-fiction. These films are attempts to better define hum

Nightmares or a crippling reality? A review on sleep paralysis.

Sleep Paralysis (SP) is a state that occurs during the hypnagogic or hypnopompic period in which one finds themselves unable to move despite being conscious. During an episode of SP, the individual experiences muscle atonia, as they would during normal sleep, but they remain conscious. SP is also largely associated with three types of hallucinations - the 'intruder', the 'incubus', and an out of body experience. It can induce tremendous fear in the individual experiencing it, and cause significant distress. SP has been found to co-occur with chronic conditions such as hypertension and obstruct

Behavioural beliefs of Ghanaian radiographers and reporting of child physical abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Radiographers are well placed to flag non accidental injury in children due to their unique position within the imaging chain. Being able to identify (or suspect) physical abuse in children and reporting the incident are, however, two different issues. This study was conducted to explore the external influences in the decision making of the Ghanaian radiographer to report suspected child physical abuse (CPA). METHOD: This was a qualitative study which applied interpretive phenomenology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 radiographers who were selected from variou

Neonatal teeth association with Down's syndrome. A case report.

A case of natal teeth in a four-day-old female brought by a forty four year old mother is presented. These natal teeth were present in the upper and lower jaws. Of special interest was the shape and positions of these especially the upper tooth in the left canine region and the fact that these teeth were present in a child with Down's syndrome features. The anxiety of the mother and the desire to get them removed immediately underlines the superstition and misconceptions with which natal teeth are viewed. The multidisciplinary approach to management is also highlighted.

'This is the Test of Our Faith': An Exploratory Study of the Religio-spiritual and Cultural Construction of Cleft Lip and Palate Among Muslim Parents in Punjab, Pakistan.

One of the most common congenital defects affecting the orofacial areas worldwide is cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P), which causes a range of social, psychological, and medical challenges for affected children and their families. Several socio-cultural beliefs and superstitions are attached to this condition, but little is known about how CL/P is framed by Muslim parents. The religious, spiritual, and cultural construction of CL/P is a significant yet often overlooked aspect of the subject covered in this study. It also discusses how parents of children with CL/P use spirituality and reli

Natal tooth associated with fibrous hyperplasia - a rare case report.

Eruption of tooth at about 6 months of age is a significant stage in child's life and is an emotional event for parents. However, a tooth present in the oral cavity of newborn can lead to a lot of delusions. Natal and neonatal teeth are of utmost importance not only for a dentist but also for a paediatrician due to parent's anxiety, folklore superstitions and numerous associated complications with it. This paper reports a rare case, wherein a natal tooth has led to the development of a reactive fibrous hyperplasia in an 8-week-old infant.

A brief journey into medical care and disease in ancient Egypt.

Ancient Egypt was one of the greatest civilizations to have arisen, becoming the cradle of scientific enquiry and social development over 3 millennia; undoubtedly its knowledge of medicine has been vastly underestimated. Few artefacts survive which describe the medical organization, but from the extent of the diseases afflicting that ancient populus there would have been much to study. Evidence from papyri, tomb bas reliefs and the writings of historians of antiquity tell of an intense interest in the sciences, humanities and medicine born of an educated society which had overcome the supersti

[Taphophobia and resurrection mania].

There are two rare psychopathological phenomena: The fear to be buried alive (taphophobia) and the delusion to rise again from the grave (delusion of resurrection). These cases are given as illustration. Taphophobia is counted among the neuroses, the delusion of resurrection is a cardinal symptom of the psychosis "phantastic paraphrenia" Both states are rooted in unconscious fears and and wishes in man, especially in superstition. The theoretical concept behind these psychopathological phenomena is twofold--using an eclectic open system of interpretation--taphophobia is seen in the light of ps
