Enhancing angular photonic spin Hall effect at surface plasmon resonance.

The photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is the deep subwavelength spin component shift of light induced by the spin-orbit interaction of photons. Here, we demonstrate a polarimetric scheme to directly measure the surface plasmon resonance-enhanced angular PSHE in the Kretschmann configuration using a gold film. In contrast to the weak measurement scheme that indirectly measures the spatial term-dominated PSHE using a well-collimated source, we focused the incident beam to a small beam waist and significantly enhanced the angular PSHE. Imbert-Fedorov shift manifested as a displacement offset of th

Recent advances in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensing technologies.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is an optical phenomenon associated with noble metal nanostructures. The resonances result in sharp spectral absorption peaks as well as enhanced local electromagnetic fields, which have been widely used in chemical and biological sensing. Over the past decade, as label-free analytical method, LSPR sensors have gained considerable interest and undergone rapid development. In addition to conventional refractive-index sensing through resonant wavelength shift, molecular sensing by colorimetry and imaging techniques have also been developed. Moreover, th

Surface plasmon resonance-based oligonucleotide biosensor for Salmonella Typhi detection.

Due to high mortality rates, typhoid fever still is one of the major health problems in the world, particularly in developing countries. The lack of highly specific and sensitive diagnostic tests and the great resemblance of typhoid fever symptoms to other diseases made the false-negative diagnosis a major challenge in typhoid fever management. Hence, we decided to design a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) based biosensor for specific detection of Salmonella typhi through DNA hybridization. The results showed that the 10 nM of the synthetic target sequence, as well as 1 nM of PCR product, were

Laboratory Diagnosis of Paratyphoid Fever: Opportunity of Surface Plasmon Resonance.

Paratyphoid fever is caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi (A, B and C), and contributes significantly to global disease burden. One of the major challenges in the diagnosis of paratyphoid fever is the lack of a proper gold standard. Given the absence of a licensed vaccine against S. Paratyphi, this diagnostic gap leads to inappropriate antibiotics use, thus, enhancing antimicrobial resistance. In addition, the symptoms of paratyphoid overlap with other infections, including the closely related typhoid fever. Since the development and utilization of a standard, sensitiv

Electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) aptasensor for ampicillin detection.

Surface plasmon resonance technique is highly sensitive to various processes taking place on a metal film and it has emerged as a powerful label-free method to study molecular binding processes taking place on a surface. Another important but less explored area of applications is the use of hybrid methods which combine electrochemistry with optical methods for better monitoring and understanding of biochemical processes. A detection method based on surface plasmon resonance was developed for ampicillin, applying electrochemical techniques for the elaboration and characterization of the aptasen

Multiplex blood group typing by cellular surface plasmon resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Blood-group typing of donors and patients is essential to avoid incompatible transfusions. Transfusion of incompatible RBCs may result in alloimmunization complicating future transfusions or in the presence of antibodies in adverse reactions. With more than 300 blood group antigens identified, it is difficult to provide fully compatible blood. Currently, standard practice is to match for the most immunogenic antigens. While the current agglutination-based RBC-typing methods are reliable for testing a selected number of antigens, they are not easily adaptable for high-throughput mul

Surface plasmon resonance in CdSe semiconductor coated with gold nanoparticles.

We have grown CdSe semiconductor films on glass substrates and the films were coated with Au nanoparticles of 10 nm in size by the pulsed-laser deposition technique. The films demonstrate a large enhancement of Raman intensity and photoluminescence of CdSe semiconductor via excitation of surface plasmon resonances in proximate gold metal nanoparticles deposited on the surface of CdSe film. These observations suggest a variety of approaches for improving the performance of devices such as photodetectors, photovoltaics, and related devices, including biosensors.

Palm-sized biodetection system based on localized surface plasmon resonance.

We present a complete palm-sized, battery-operated biodetection system based on highly sensitive localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). We have replaced the spectrum analyzer by four pulse-powered light-emitting diodes (LED), each with different emission spectra. The reflected light beams from all LEDs were detected by a single photodiode. Its composite output current was demultiplexed by a four-channel lock-in amplifier. Device performance was demonstrated using an LSPR chip covered with a mixture of ethanol/water and 2-propanol/water at different concentrations. The miniaturized system

Surface plasmon resonance analysis of staphylococcal enterotoxin B in food.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors are electro-optical instruments used for analyzing real-time protein-protein interactions. This work evaluates an SPR biosensor (Biacore 3000) in the detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) in foods. A sandwich SPR immunosensor involving two antibodies was used. The capturing antibody, bound covalently to the surface of the biosensor chip, performs the initial binding of the antigen and a second antibody binds to the captured antigen. The second antibody makes antigen verification possible and amplifies the signal. Pure SEB as well as SEB in s

Black Phosphorous-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor for Malaria Diagnosis.

This study presents a black phosphorus-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor for malaria detection, integrating silicon nitride (Si3N4) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) to enhance sensitivity and molecular recognition. The biosensor configurations were optimized through numerical simulations, evaluating metal thickness, dielectric layer thickness, and the number of black phosphorus layers to achieve maximum performance. The optimized system (Opt-Sys4) exhibited high sensitivity (464.4°/RIU for early-stage malaria) and improved detection accuracy, outperforming conventional SPR sensors

Two-dimensional material-enhanced surface plasmon resonance for antibiotic sensing.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials attract attention from the academic community due to their excellent properties, and their wide application in sensing is expected to revolutionize environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and food safety. In this work, we systematically evaluate the effects of 2D materials on the Au chip surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The results reveal that 2D materials cannot improve the sensitivity of intensity-modulated SPR sensors. However, there exists an optimal real part of RI of 3.5-4.0 and optimal thickness when choosing nanomaterials for sensitivity enh

Analysis of Tau/Nucleoporin Interactions by Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy.

Tau, a soluble and predominantly neuronal protein, is best known for its microtubule (MT)-binding function in the cytosol, where it decisively contributes to stability as well as modulation of MT dynamics. In Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies, Tau is altered into forming intracellular neurofibrillary tangles; additionally, also a mislocalization from the cytosol to the nucleus has been observed where interactions of Tau with the nucleus become possible. Using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), it was recently shown that Tau can directly interact with certain nucleoporins (e.g., Nup98), c

Dual Kretschmann and Otto configuration fiber surface plasmon resonance biosensor.

We present a dual-resonance fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for biological analysis. The sensing element was fabricated by sequentially sputtering layers of indium tin oxide (ITO) (100 nm thickness) and Au (35 nm thickness) on the surface of an optical fiber. The refractive index dispersion effect of ITO material led to resonances in the near infrared and visible wavelength regions. The refractive index of ITO is larger than the optical fiber in visible spectral area (400 to 733nm), such that the structure is a typical Kretschmann configuration surface plasmon resonance sensor. Investigation of surface plasmon resonance biosensor for skin sensitizers studies.

Non-animal testing methods are a current challenge in terms of the assessment of skin sensitization potential for new chemicals. Our objective was to investigate a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor to screen allergens against nucleophilic amino acids (cysteine, lysine and histidine) in a direct binding assay. Amino acids were immobilized on the sensor surface and exposed to different skin allergens (chemicals and fragrances) with varying sensitizing potential. Cysteine was found to be more reactive than lysine while histidine showed the lowest reactivity. The interactions observed were

An immunosensor for syphilis screening based on surface plasmon resonance.

In this paper the development of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) immunosensor for syphilis screening is described. This immunosensor is based on the detection of antibodies in serum against the causative organism Treponema pallidum. In order to achieve selectivity a recombinant Treponema pallidum membrane protein A (TmpA) was used. This antigen can react with antibodies to T. pallidum, present in serum of syphilitic patients. Reproducible results have been obtained, using a 'sandwich SPR' method: binding of a sandwich antibody to the treponemal antibody after serum incubation was measured in

Zein adsorption to hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces investigated by surface plasmon resonance.

Zein, the prolamine of corn, has been investigated for its potential as an industrial biopolymer. In previous research, zein was plasticized with oleic acid and formed into sheets/films. Physical properties of films were affected by film structure and controlled in turn by zein-oleic acid interactions. The nature of such interactions is not well understood. Thus, protein-fatty acid interactions were investigated in this work by the use of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Zein adsorption from 75% aqueous 2-propanol solutions, 0.05% to 0.5% w/v, onto hydrophilic and hydrophobic self-assembled mo

Digital surface plasmon resonance imaging for attomolar detection of miR-451a.

Microribonucleic acids (microRNAs, miRNAs) are important emerging biomarkers, yet their detection in clinical samples remains challenging due to their low concentrations and matrix effects, which typically require complex workflows including miRNA extraction, reverse transcription, and amplification. Here, we introduce a new approach to miRNA detection that combines a digital large-field-of-view surface plasmon resonance imaging platform capable of detecting individual gold nanoparticle labels, each associated with a single target miRNA molecule, with a molecularly triggered nanoparticle relea

Magnetic nanoparticle-enhanced surface plasmon resonance biosensor for extracellular vesicle analysis.

The sensitive analysis of small lipid extracellular vesicles (EVs) by using a grating-coupled surface plasmon resonance (GC-SPR) biosensor has been reported. In order to enable the analysis of trace amounts of EVs present in complex liquid samples, the target analyte is pre-concentrated on the sensor surface by using magnetic nanoparticles and its affinity binding is probed by wavelength interrogation of SPR. The GC-SPR has been demonstrated to allow for the implementation of efficient pulling of EVs to the sensor surface by using magnetic nanoparticles and an external magnetic field gradient

Sensitivity of metal nanoparticle surface plasmon resonance to the dielectric environment.

Electrodynamic simulations of gold nanoparticle spectra were used to investigate the sensitivity of localized surface plasmon band position to the refractive index, n, of the medium for nanoparticles of various shapes and nanoshells of various structures. Among single-component nanoparticles less than 130 nm in size, sensitivities of dipole resonance positions to bulk refractive index are found to depend only upon the wavelength of the resonance and the dielectric properties of the metal and the medium. Among particle plasmons that peak in the frequency range where the real part of the metal d
