Surface tension of airway aspirates withdrawn during neonatal resuscitation reflects lung maturity.

The indications for treatment of neonates with exogenous pulmonary surfactant are still discussed controversially. Some premature neonates are sufficiently treated by CPAP, others need conventional ventilation and/or surfactant. The available lung maturity tests have limitations. The captive bubble surfactometer (CBS) provides measurement of surface activity from rather small amounts of surfactant. This study aimed to determine surface activity from small volume aspirates of the upper airways of neonates by means of the CBS and to correlate the results with clinical data. Small upper airway as

Measurements of surface tension of organic solvents using a simple microfabricated chip.

Measurement of the surface tension of organic solvents using a simple microfabricated chip was developed based on the principle of differential capillary rise. The theory, design, fabrication, and characterization of the chip were described. A two-step etching technique was used to fabricate a number of microchannels with different dimensions on the glass substrate. Capillarity was used to introduce liquid samples, which requires no power supply or actuator to be applied in the experiment. Liquid in different microchannels generated capillary rise with different heights, by which surface tensi

Surface electromyography in patients with tension-type headache and normal healthy subjects.

Headache is one of the most common medical symptoms and tension - type headache is the most common form. Pericranial muscles have been invoked as a source of nociception among patients with tension - type headache. This study was performed to determine surface electromyography (EMG) as representative of the electrical activity of pericranial muscles in tension - type headache and normal subjects during rest and mental calculation. Surface EMG recordings were performed in 20 normal subjects (age 33.9 +/- 8.9 years) and 20 tension-type headache patients (34.5 +/- 9.4 years) using electroencephal

Surface tension-driven persistence: How hydrogel interfacial properties regulate fibroblast directional migration.

The development of viscoelastic biomaterials with tunable mechanical properties is a key issue in a wide range of applications in mechanobiology. While numerous foregoing works have revealed the impact of bulk matrix stiffness on cellular and multicellular responses, few have examined the effect of interfacial mechanical properties, such as surface tension σ. Owing to the elastocapillarity phenomenon, σ of soft materials can dominate their bulk mechanical properties and thus regulate cellular response. To address this complex issue of mechanotransduction largely overlooked in the literature, t

Oscillations in Dynamic Surface Tension of Cationic-nonionic Binary Surfactant Aqueous Solutions.

In this work, the adsorption dynamics of mixed aqueous solutions of tetraethyleneglycol monoocthyl ether (C8E4) - dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) were studied using sessile bubble surface tensiometry. When C8E4 was added to the DTAB solution, the dynamic surface tension exhibited a unique oscillation decay pattern. In contrast, the addition of DTAB to the C8E4 solution resulted in a simple monotonic decay of the surface tension. The same trend was observed for mixtures of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and DTAB. The occurrence of two distinguishable dynamic surface tension

Fluid surface tension evaluation using capillary wave measurement with optical coherence tomography.

The surface tension of biological fluids is an important parameter because the mechanical properties of fluids are closely linked with hematological diseases and other pathophysiologies. Capillary waves are associated with fluid mechanical properties. Here, we propose a method that utilizes the acoustic radiation force (ARF) to generate propagating waves and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure the wave motion. This ARF-OCT method is capable of evaluating the surface tension of fluids, water and porcine whole blood in this study, based on the dispersion relation of capillary waves. Tw

Rheology of Aqueous Solutions in the Presence of Proton Exchange Membrane: Surface Tension.

Controlling the rheological properties of liquids allows for the regulation of effective movement, transport of substances, and processes in biological systems. This work presents an experimental investigation into the influence of the proton-exchange polymer membrane Nafion on the surface tension coefficient (STC) of distilled water, aqueous solutions of two methylene blue (MB) forms, and ascorbic acid (AA). Immediately upon membrane immersion in the solutions, a sharp decrease in the surface tension of distilled water, as well as of the oxidized and reduced forms of MB, occurs. The observed

Microscopic origins of the swim pressure and the anomalous surface tension of active matter.

The unique pressure exerted by active particles-the "swim" pressure-has proven to be a useful quantity in explaining many of the seemingly confounding behaviors of active particles. However, its use has also resulted in some puzzling findings including an extremely negative surface tension between phase separated active particles. Here, we demonstrate that this contradiction stems from the fact that the swim pressure is not a true pressure. At a boundary or interface, the reduction in particle swimming generates a net active force density-an entirely self-generated body force. The pressure at

Effect of temperature and pressure on surface tension of polystyrene in supercritical carbon dioxide.

The surface tension of polymers in a supercritical fluid is one of the most important physicochemical parameters in many engineering processes, such as microcellular foaming where the surface tension between a polymer melt and a fluid is a principal factor in determining cell nucleation and growth. This paper presents experimental results of the surface tension of polystyrene in supercritical carbon dioxide, together with theoretical calculations for a corresponding system. The surface tension is determined by Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis-Profile (ADSA-P), where a high pressure and tempera

Measuring Surface and Interfacial Tension In Situ in Microdripping Mode for Electrohydrodynamic Applications.

Walking on water is made possible, at least for tiny insects, by molecular interaction at the interfaces of dissimilar materials. Impact of these interactions-surface tension (SFT) and, more broadly, interfacial tension (IFT)-is particularly evident at micro and nano sizescales. Thus, implications of walking on water can be significant for SFT or IFT (S/IFT)-driven nanofabrication technologies, such as electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA), in developing next generation biomimetic microphysiological systems (MPS) and drug delivery systems (DDS). However, current methods for estimating S/IFT,

Saliva production and surface tension: influences on patency of the passive upper airway.

Pharyngeal patency is influenced by the surface tension (gamma) of the upper airway lining liquid (UAL), of which saliva is a major component. We investigated the influences of saliva production on gamma of the UAL, and upper airway re-opening and closing pressures. In 10 supine, male, anaesthetized, tracheostomised, mechanically ventilated New Zealand White rabbits, we measured re-opening and closing of the passive isolated upper airway at baseline and following graded (cumulative) doses of methacholine or atropine. Upper airway liquid volume index (UALVI) was assessed using a standardized su

Sustaining High-Performance Dropwise Condensation of Low-Surface-Tension Fluids on Multiscale Additively Manufactured Slippery Surfaces.

Achieving long-term stable dropwise condensation in industry has been a long-standing goal over the past few decades. However, due to irreversible wetting state transition and insufficient material durability, the delicate dropwise condensation (DWC) mode rapidly deteriorates to the filmwise condensation mode (FWC) after hours or days of operation, a phenomenon commonly referred to as flooding. The slippery lubricant-infused surface (SLIPS), also known as a liquid-infused surface (LIS), was found to have great promise for enabling DWC not only for steam but also for low-surface-tension fluids

Enhancement of Cytoskeletal Tension Promotes Amyloid-β Aggregation on the Neuronal Cell Surface.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for the majority of dementia cases. The accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregates on neuronal surfaces is a known important event that typifies AD. Although cell membrane architecture and cytoskeletal tension are thought to be involved in the process of Aβ aggregation, it remains unclear how cytoskeleton-derived tension alters the function of cell membranes, which serve as a scaffold for Aβ aggregation. In this study, we investigated whether cytoskeletal tension promotes Aβ aggregation on neuroblastoma, SH-SY5Y

How Small, Arboreal Lizards Run on Water: Surface Tension, Morphology, Behavior, and Kinematics.

The vast majority of water-walking animals are tiny invertebrates. Most water running vertebrates are larger and specialized for this behavior. As size increases, the role of surface tension decreases and inertial mechanisms dominate. We report how Anolis sagrei, a small, quadrupedal, arboreal lizard with adhesive pads runs on water, using behavioral observations, high-speed video, and decreasing surface tension with a surfactant. We quantified how frequently anoles ran on water, and if this was affected by reduced surface tension. We also compared their running performance and kinematics in t

d-α-tocopherol nanoemulsions: Size properties, rheological behavior, surface tension, osmolarity and cytotoxicity.

The aim of this study was the assessment of the physicochemical stability of d-α-tocopherol formulated in medium chain triglyceride nanoemulsions, stabilized with Tween®80 and Lipoid®S75 as surfactant and co-surfactant, respectively. d-α-tocopherol was selected as active ingredient because of its well-recognized interesting anti-oxidant properties (such as radical scavenger) for food and pharmaceutical industries. A series of nanoemulsions of mean droplet size below 90 nm (polydispersity index < 0.15) have been produced by high-pressure homogenization, and their surface electrical charge (zeta

Creating Tunable Low-Surface-Tension-Liquid Capsules via Impact-Driven Liquid-Liquid Encapsulation.

The encapsulation of droplets with low surface tension constitutes a critical area of investigation due to its extensive application across pharmaceuticals, environmental engineering, and advanced thermal management. A facile and effective approach─impact-driven liquid-liquid encapsulation (LLE)─has gained attention recently. This approach involves a descending core liquid impacting an immiscible liquid film (shell layer) that floats atop a host bath, subsequently being encapsulated by the liquid film. Despite its promise, the controlled encapsulation targeting low-surface-tension droplets via

Surface tension-induced mechanotransduction in keratinocytes influences fibroblast activity and dermal matrix composition.

OBJECTIVE: Human skin is a highly dynamic organ capable of sensing and responding to mechanical stimuli through tightly regulated communication between the epidermis and dermis. Daily mechanical forces-such as stretching and compression-modulate skin structure and function via mechanotransduction pathways. Central to this process are the mechanosensitive Piezo channels, which convert mechanical tension into electrochemical signals. While the role of Piezo channels in epidermal keratinocytes has been established, it remains unclear whether mechanical tension at the skin's surface can influence

Adsorption Process of Binary Surfactant Aqueous Solutions Studied by Dynamic Surface Tension Measurements.

We investigated the dynamics of surface tension in binary nonionic surfactant mixtures in aqueous solutions using a custom-made sessile bubble tensiometer. When the bubble surface is initially saturated with tetraethyleneglycol monooctylether (C8E4), adding a second surfactant, octyl-β-D-maltopyranoside (OM), to the adsorbed film results in a straightforward, gradual decrease in surface tension. Conversely, if the surfactants are introduced in reverse order, the surface tension exhibits an overshoot or oscillation over time, depending on the relative concentrations of C8E4 and OM. This pattern
