Microbial contaminants isolated from items and work surfaces in the post- operative ward at Kawolo general hospital, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial infections are a major setback in the healthcare delivery system especially in developing countries due to the limited resources. The roles played by medical care equipment and work surfaces in the transmission of such organisms have inevitably contributed to the elevated mortality, morbidity and antibiotic resistances. METHODS: A total 138 samples were collected during the study from Kawolo general hospital. Swab samples were collected from various work surfaces and fomites which consisted of; beds, sink taps, infusion stands, switches, work tables and scissors. Cultur

Personal protective equipment for preventing highly infectious diseases due to exposure to contaminated body fluids in healthcare staff.

BACKGROUND: In epidemics of highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or SARS, healthcare workers (HCW) are at much greater risk of infection than the general population, due to their contact with patients' contaminated body fluids. Contact precautions by means of personal protective equipment (PPE) can reduce the risk. It is unclear which type of PPE protects best, what is the best way to remove PPE, and how to make sure HCWs use PPE as instructed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate which type or component of full-body PPE and which method of donning or removing (doffing) PPE have t

Improving Compliance With Surgical Scrubbing and Sterilization Protocols: A Two-Cycle Quality Improvement Project at Atbara Teaching Hospital.

Background Surgical site infections remain a major cause of postoperative morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, increased healthcare costs, and preventable mortality worldwide. Adherence to evidence-based surgical scrubbing, sterilization, and aseptic practices is essential for reducing contamination risks and maintaining patient safety within operating theatres. This quality improvement project aimed to assess compliance with internationally recommended surgical scrubbing and sterilization standards, implement targeted interventions, and evaluate their impact using a closed-loop audit methodo

Unveiling the dynamics of intraoperative contamination in total hip arthroplasty: the discrepancy between particulate and microbial contamination in surgical site infection risk.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a major problem following total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study investigated the impact of a standard intraoperative routine where the surgical team wears full-body exhaust suits (space suits) within a laminar airflow (LAF)-ventilated operating room (OR) on environmental contamination. Our primary objective was to identify potential modifiable intraoperative factors that could be better controlled to minimize SSI risk. METHODS: We implemented an approach involving simultaneous and continuous air sampling throughout actual primary cementless THA

Association of Surgical Jacket and Bouffant Use With Surgical Site Infection Risk.

IMPORTANCE: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Various measures have been enacted decrease the occurrence of SSIs involving the regulation of the attire worn by the operating room staff, at times without sufficient peer-reviewed literature to support their implementation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the combination of mandated surgical jackets and bouffants in the operating room is associated with the risk of surgical site infection. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study of 34 042 inpatient surgical encounters a

Is Your Surgical Helmet System Compromising the Sterile Field? A Systematic Review of Contamination Risks and Preventive Measures in Total Joint Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Surgical helmet systems remain widely used in total joint arthroplasty (TJA) despite evidence to suggest that they may increase infection risk via contamination of sterile equipment and operating room air. However, the challenging nature of conducting high-quality clinical trials to study outcomes with low incidence, such as prosthetic joint infection (PJI), has made drawing definitive conclusions from the available experimental studies difficult. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the best available evidence is needed to clarify the association between surgical helmet system u

Bacterial profile and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolates from inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections occur in patients under medical care, which is a major public health issue in hospitals worldwide. The prevalence is two to three folds higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. Inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals such as gowns, mobile phones, and stethoscopes are highly prone to bacterial contamination from the healthcare setting. In Ethiopia, there is a paucity of published data on the bacterial profile and susceptibility patterns of an isolates. OBJECTIVE: To determine the bacterial profile and antimicrobial

Heat stress associated with aerosol PPE and its impact.

BACKGROUND: Aerosol personal protective equipment (PPE) is subjectively reported to negatively impact healthcare workers' performance and well-being, but this has not been assessed objectively. AIMS: This randomized controlled crossover study aimed to quantify the heat stress associated with aerosol PPE and to investigate its impact upon mood, cognitive and motor function, and task performance. METHODS: Sixteen healthy, young, lean participants (eight males) undertook an exercise protocol, which simulated the metabolic expenditure of hospital work: once wearing aerosol PPE (PPE visit) and on

Awake Craniotomy in a Child: Assessment of Eligibility with a Simulated Theatre Experience.

BACKGROUND: Awake craniotomy is a useful surgical approach to identify and preserve eloquent areas during tumour resection, during surgery for arteriovenous malformation resections and for resective epilepsy surgery. With decreasing age, a child's ability to cooperate and mange an awake craniotomy becomes increasingly relevant. Preoperative screening is essential to identify the child who can undergo the procedure safely. Case Description. A 11-year-old female patient presented with a tumour in her right motor cortex, presumed to be a dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour (DNET). We had conc

Infection Prevention Precautions for Routine Anesthesia Care During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

Many health care systems around the world continue to struggle with large numbers of SARS-CoV-2-infected patients, while others have diminishing numbers of cases following an initial surge. There will most likely be significant oscillations in numbers of cases for the foreseeable future, based on the regional epidemiology of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Less affected hospitals and facilities will attempt to progressively resume elective procedures and surgery. Ramping up elective care in hospitals that deliberately curtailed elective care to focus on SARS-CoV-2

How histone modifications influence cellular radiosensitivity: Pharmaceutically targeting epigenetic regulators as a promising avenue to overcome radioresistance.

Cancer remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Radiotherapy (RT), a cornerstone of oncological treatment for over a century, has achieved great success in various cancers. However, radioresistance remains the primary factor leading to the failure of radiotherapy. Histone modifications in cancer cells are known to play a pivotal role in regulating radiosensitivity by modulating chromatin structure, either by loosening or tightening it. Here, we provide a comprehensive summary of the link between aberrant histone modifications and radiation resistance across various cancer and normal t
