Vector borne and zoonotic diseases (Larchmont, N.Y.)2014eng
Anthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis, is an acute disease affecting wildlife, livestock, and humans worldwide, although its impact on these populations is underappreciated. In Ukraine, surveillance is passive, and anthrax is often detected in livestock. However, wildlife is not subject to surveillance, although anthrax deaths (such as in wild boar, Sus scrofa) have been documented. The wild boar is a plentiful and widespread species in Ukraine and is frequently hunted. We initiated a screening study testing Ukrainian wild boar blood samples for antibodies to B. anthracis. We mapped results re

Leptospira is a bacteria responsible for a widespread zoonosis that affects both humans and animals. Leptospirosis is a challenging pathology to diagnose and treat since its signs are unspecific and symptoms vary greatly. The disease seems to be highly prevalent in environments where reservoir animals such as rats and small mammals are common. Even though leptospirosis in humans in Lithuania is rare, it remains a disease of significance in Europe. Information on reservoir animals and prevalence of Leptospira in wild animals in Lithuania is lacking. The aim of this country-wide study was to eva

Molecular and biological characteristics of a new species of Cryptosporidium from the feces of pigs (Sus scrofa) is described. Oocysts are structurally indistinguishable from those of Cryptosporidium parvum; they are passed fully sporulated, lack sporocysts, and measure 4.9-4.4 microm (mean = 4.6 microm) x 4.0-4.3 microm (mean = 4.2 microm); length to width ratio 1.1 (n = 50). Cryptosporidium suis is not transmissible to nude mice and is poorly infectious for cattle. Molecular and phylogenetic analyses at the 18S ribosomal RNA, heat shock protein 70, and actin gene loci demonstrate C. suis to

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the heritability of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in pigs and the relation between HCM and heart measurements, pathologic features, and growth to provide references for HCM line development. A total of 353 on-farm tested gilts (females) and boars (males) from 74 sire families were randomly selected from a single breeding farm where HCM was prevalent. Hearts were collected after animals were slaughtered. Heart length, width, and weight, heart-to-body weight ratio, and thickness of the cranial, middle, and caudal portions of the ventricular septum, l

Among domestic animals, pigs serve as valuable biomodels for studying endocrine disorders due to similarities in the structure and hormone production of their pituitary gland with humans. The pituitary gland is a central regulator of hormonal balance and plays a crucial role in various physiological functions. The present ultrastructural studies of the porcine pituitary gland not only enhance our understanding of porcine anatomy but also provide valuable comparative data for understanding the functioning of the human pituitary gland. The pituitary gland of the pig consisted of adenohypophysis

Sarcoptic mange is a widely distributed disease, with numerous potential hosts among domestic and wild animals. Nowadays it is considered a neglected re-emergent infection in humans. As a difference with domestic pigs, and even with several clinical cases reported in some European countries, it seems that Eurasian wild boars (Sus scrofa) have a low susceptibility to clinical mange. However, because of a case of confirmed transmission from Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) to wild boar in the province of Tarragona, we planned a large-scale ELISA survey in the neighboring Valencian Community (SE Sp

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite of great public health concern. Wild boars could be considered an emerging source of toxoplasmosis in humans due to the popularity of venison and their increasing population. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in the Slovenian wild boar population and evaluate risk factors for human infection. Of 353 samples, 62% were positive for T. gondii using ELISA tests. This is the highest T. gondii seroprevalence reported to date in wild boar worldwide. The increase in prevalence with increasing age (p = 0.003) and weight (p =

Body wall defects (BWDs) are not well studied and categorized in veterinary medicine. BWDs can be an isolated occurrence, but often occur with other major developmental abnormalities. Thirty-two body wall malformations of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) are presented and classified, distinguishing between body wall dysplasia (umbilical hernia, abdominal wall distension and gastroschisis), omphalocoele and thoracoabdominoschisis (Cantrell syndrome, shistosomus reflexus, body stalk anomalies).

Currently available animal models for delivery of drug capsules and pharmacokinetic testing are limited by either intersubject variability in gastric emptying time or the need to sedate animals when using targeted delivery methods of drug capsules. With the increasing development of large-molecule biologics, better in vivo models for testing the pharmacokinetics of capsule-delivered drugs are urgently needed. To this end, we made engineering modifications to an existing bovine surgical cannula device, successfully implanted this modified cannula into pigs, and delivered drug capsules directly

Hunting in Poland has a long tradition and became more popular after 1990. Each year over 60,000 wild boar are hunted. Some of them may act as Trichinella carriers thus all carcasses of wild boar are systematically sampled in game-handling establishments as part of the post-mortem examination. The aim of the study was to determine the species of Trichinella and to evaluate the year to year differences in the occurrence of those species in the populations of wild boar in Poland. Samples for the study were provided by the Veterinary Inspection Service. Wild boar carcasses were examined using a d

We describe the morphological, biological, and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium pig genotype II and propose the species name Cryptosporidium scrofarum n. sp. to reflect its prevalence in adult pigs worldwide. Oocysts of C. scrofarum are morphologically indistinguishable from C. parvum, measuring 4.81-5.96 μm (mean=5.16)×4.23-5.29 μm (mean=4.83) with a length to width ratio of 1.07±0.06 (n=400). Oocysts of C. scrofarum obtained from a naturally infected pig were infectious for 8-week-old pigs but not 4-week-old pigs. The prepatent period in 8-week-old Cryptosporidium-naive pigs was

BACKGROUND: Coxiella burnetii, the etiological agent of coxiellosis in animals and Q fever in humans, is a zoonotic pathogen of global relevance that can infect a wide range of species. Although several domestic and wild animals are involved in the natural cycle, the role of wildlife hosts remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to investigate the presence of C. burnetii in feral pigs hunted in Brazilian Pantanal wetland.
METHODS: In this study, 36 free-living feral pigs legally hunted in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, were sampled. Sera were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent

Leptospirosis is a globally widespread zoonosis, with wildlife species playing a key role in the maintenance and environmental dissemination of Leptospira spp. Wild boar (Sus scrofa) are increasingly recognized as potential reservoir; however, molecular data on renal carriage of Leptospira spp. in Europe and particularly in Germany, remain scarce. In this study, 1281 wild boar kidney samples collected in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt were analyzed by real-time PCR to investigate the presence of pathogenic and intermediate Leptospira DNA. Pathogenic Leptospira DNA was detected in 3.1% (95%

Clonazepam causes sedation and psychomotor impairment in people. Due to similarities between people and swine in response to benzodiazepines, clonazepam may represent a viable option to produce mild-to-moderate tranquillization in pigs. The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic profile of a single oral dose (0.5 mg/kg) of clonazepam in eight healthy, growing commercial cross pigs. Serial plasma samples were collected at baseline and up to 96 h after administration. Plasma concentrations were quantified using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, and compa

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to identify long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that play important roles in starvation stress, analyze their functions, and discover potential molecular targets to alleviate starvation stress to provide a theoretical reference for subsequent in-depth research.
METHODS: We generated a piglet starvation stress animal model. Nine Yorkshire weaned piglets were randomly divided into a long-term starvation stress group (starved for 72 h), short-term starvation stress group (starved for 48 h), and the control group. LncRNA libraries were constructed using high-throughp

Brucellosis due to Brucella suis biovar 2 is one of the most important endemic diseases in wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Europe. The aim of the present study was to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis in wild boars in the eastern part of Latvia. Wild boars killed by hunters in the period from January to April 2015 (n = 877) and from March to April in 2016 (n = 167) were examined for antibodies against B. suis by the Rose Bengal test (RBT), a complement fixation test (CFT), and by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. In 2015, 199 samples (22.7%) were positive by RBT and/or CFT wh

Serum samples were collected from 385 wild boars between 2010 and 2013 to examine the seroprevalence of influenza A virus (IAV) in Japan. Antibodies against IAV were identified using a commercial kit in 13 wild boars (3.4%). To identify the serotypes, positive sera were examined by virus-neutralization test using representative serotypes and strains. Three wild boars in Yamaguchi and four in Tochigi showed the highest antibody titers against the pandemic H1N1 2009 virus and classical swine H1N1 virus strains, respectively. These data indicate that wild boars may have close contact with humans

This report describes laparoscopic-assisted cryptorchidectomy in 2 Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs. Abdominal access was obtained by a modified-Hasson technique allowing for placement of a 6 mm laparoscopic trocar-cannula assembly. Following carbon dioxide insufflation, 2 para-preputial 6 mm instrument portals were established. The cryptorchid testicle was extracted from the abdomen following enlargement of the para-preputial instrument portal and cryptorchidectomy was performed extra-corporeally.
