Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are pivotal in sustainable agriculture, enhancing crop productivity and reducing reliance on chemical inputs. However, their dual role as beneficial agents and potential stressors remains underexplored. This review examines the paradoxical adverse effects of PGPB, challenging the predominantly optimistic narrative surrounding their use. At the plant level, unintended consequences include hormonal imbalances (e.g., auxin-induced root inhibition), phytotoxic metabolite production (e.g., hydrogen cyanide), and trade-offs between growth and defense mechanisms

Soil is the backbone of the agricultural economy of any country. Soil salinity refers to the higher concentration of soluble salts in the soil. Soil salinity is a ruinous abiotic stress that has emerged as a threatening issue for food security. High salt concentration causes an ionic imbalance that hampers water uptake, affecting photosynthesis and other metabolic processes, ultimately resulting in inferior seed germination and stunted plant growth. A wide range of strategies have been adopted to mitigate the harmful effects of salinity such as efficient irrigation techniques, soil reclamation

BACKGROUND: One in five young children globally suffer the consequences of stunted growth and development and millions experience deficiencies in zinc, iron, iodine, vitamins A and B12, nutrients found bioavailable in fish foods. Small-scale fisheries have the potential to generate income and augment fish consumption while being environmentally sustainable if appropriately managed. However, those engaged in small-scale fisheries are often marginalized, poor, and malnourished. The Samaki Salama project seeks to better understand and address these challenges through a three-arm, longitudinal mat

BAP1 and HMGB1 alterations are implicated in the pathogenesis of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer of the membranes covering the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Genetic inactivating mutations of BAP1 cause cancer in ~100% of carriers. The mechanism/s that regulate BAP1 expression were unknown. We discovered that HMGB1 directly modulates BAP1 expression. Studying our Hmgb1 knock-out mouse mesothelioma models, primary fibroblasts obtained from carriers of pathogenic heterozygous germline BAP1 mutations, and mesothelioma cell lines, we discovered that HMGB1 loss caused a significant reduction i

The neurotrophic hypothesis of depression proposes that reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) contribute to neuronal atrophy or loss in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus and impaired hippocampal adult neurogenesis, which are associated with depressive symptoms. Chronic, but acute, treatment with typical monoaminergic antidepressants can at least partially reverse these deficits, in part via induction of BDNF and/or VEGF expression, consistent with their delayed onset of action. Controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) are a branch of materials that are designed to improve the soil release kinetics of chemical fertilizers to address problems stemming losses from runoff or other factors. Current CRFs are used but only in a limited market due to relatively high costs and doubts about their abilities to result in higher yields and increased profitability for agricultural businesses. New technologies are emerging that promise to improve the efficacy of CRFs to add additional functionality and reduce cost to make CRFs a more viable alternative to traditional chemical fertiliz

Due to its short half-life, renal toxicity and necessity for daily subcutaneous injections, recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) would best be administered in a controlled release formulation. One approach to this is the use of biodegradable laminar implants based on poly(lactic/glycolic) acid. Two PLGA laminar implant formulations (10% w/w), F(1) and F(2), were designed and statistically compared with a conventional commercial injectable (Norditropin). The following variables were chosen as responses: body weight, organ weights (heart, spleen and thymus), and tibia weights and dimensions.

Although grafted adrenal medullary tissue to the striatum has been used both experimentally and clinically in parkinsonism, there is a definite need to augment long-term survival. Infusion of nerve growth factor (NGF) or implantation of NGF-rich tissue into the area of the graft prolongs survival and induces differentiation into neural-like cells. To provide for prolonged, site-specific delivery of this growth factor to the grafted tissue in a convenient manner, we fabricated biodegradable polymer microspheres of poly(L-lactide)co-glycolide (70:30) containing NGF. Biologically active NGF was r

Previous studies have shown epidermal growth factor (EGF) facilitate peritoneal membrane healing by augmenting cell adhesion and migration. The objective of this study was to show the effect of sustained and local administration of EGF on peritoneal adhesion. Fourty-two rats were divided into six groups: control 7 and 14, gelatin 7 and 14, and EGF 7 and 14. Adhesions were created by scraping the cecum with mesh gause followed by application of absolute alcohol and placement of silk suture in the parietal peritoneum. The anterior walls of the intestines were covered with 5 x 5 cm unloaded, and

With the growing interest in sustainable agriculture, there has been a surge in exploration of multitrophic interactions between plants and microbes that can help plants adapt to changing environments and enhance their resilience to climate changes. One such beneficial microbe is Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, an aerobic, nitrogen-fixing endophyte currently being studied because of its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen within plant tissues under aerobic conditions. This endophyte also promotes plant growth through processes like phytohormone production, nutrient solubilization, and improv

Dasispermum suffruticosum (P. J. Bergius) B. L. Burtt is an aromatic halophyte recognized for its diverse phytochemistry and medicinal plant potential. Despite its potential value, limited scientific information is available regarding its agronomic performance and phytochemical responses. This study investigated the morphological, mineral, and phytochemical responses of D. suffruticosum to gradient dosages of StimBlue+, a seaweed-derived biostimulant, applied via foliar spray (2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mL/L) and growing-medium drenching (5.0, 7.0, and 9.0 mL/L), alongside an NPK fertiliser control. When China implemented the exports tax rebate policy through administrative framework in 1985, industrial energy consumption increased by more than five times. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between industrial energy demand (IED), exports tax rebate, exports, and the value of industrial output in the presence of other variables such as GDP, taking into account the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) and foreign direct investment (FDI). The present study adopted the Autoregressive-Distributed Lag (ARDL) model and Granger Casuality analysis of the VECM to examine the short

Phosphate-solubilising fungi (PSF) are beneficial microorganisms that play a pivotal role in plant growth by increasing the availability of phosphorus (P) in soil. Although phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plants, it often becomes inaccessible as it binds into insoluble forms. PSF effectively facilitate the release of this bound phosphorus through diverse mechanisms. Numerous fungal species demonstrate the ability to solubilise various types of phosphate compounds. Among the commonly researched PSF are Penicillium, Aspergillus, Rhizopus, Fusarium, Trichoderma, and Sclerotium. Moreover,

The native microbial flora and fauna are replaced by commercial chemical fertilizers and pesticides, in the current agricultural system. Imbalance of beneficial microbial diversity and natural competitors increases the severity of plant diseases. Hence, sustainable agricultural practices like bio-inoculant, stress tolerant consortium, crop rotation and mix cropping sequences is only the solution of recharging the microbial population in soils to make healthier for crop productivity and suppression of soil borne phytopathogen. Microorganisms use several direct mechanism activities, e.g. product

This review highlights the pivotal role of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) in association with nanotechnology for enhancing plant growth and health. It narratively discusses diverse PGPR groups and genera, outlining their direct mechanisms such as phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, ACC deaminase activity, hydrogen cyanide production, and siderophore production for iron chelation as well as indirect mechanisms through induced systemic resistance (ISR) and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). The application of PGPR as single inoculants and in consortia, together with omics-

Plant hormones play important roles in plant growth and development and in response to abiotic and biotic stress. The endogenous phytohormones had been widely applied to improve the productivity and the quality of crop products, and enhance the resistance of plant to abiotic stress. Many microbes produce the endogenous phytohormones, like auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acids, jasmonic acids, ethylene, and their analogues, of which some had been commercialized through fermentation and applied in large scale in crop production and ornamental. Other than the endogenous plant growth re

Multi-drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an escalating global health problem, and a strong pipeline of novel compounds is needed to combat rising antimicrobial resistance. Ecumicin is a novel analogue of the natural antimycobacterial cyclic peptide ecumicin, with selective activity against Mycobacterium species. The activity of ecumicin∗ was compared to that of frontline tuberculosis therapies under in vitro conditions representative of niches where M. tuberculosis resides in the human lung. M. tuberculosis expressing luciferase was cultured in defined 7H9-based media containing gluc

Sea lice represent a persistent and growing problem, challenging the resilience and growth of the salmon aquaculture industry. In this Norwegian case study, we studied and discuss how the absence of policy instruments directed at stimulating breeding for lice resistance (LR) might be explained. We found well-documented opportunities for selection progress for LR. Hence, breeding on LR appears with an untapped potential. We discuss how market-based, legal, institutional and interest-based factors can explain the absence of policy instruments stimulating LR breeding. Methodologically, we obtaine

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean Sea is warming approximately 20% faster than the global average, underscoring the urgent need for adaptive aquaculture strategies, including the evaluation of novel feed formulations under environmentally relevant conditions. To address this objective, the present study assessed the performance of gilthead sea bream during the unusually warm summers recently recorded in the Western Mediterranean, where temperatures have increased by approximately 0.1 °C per year over the past decade. The rising temperatures between 2020 and 2025 were associated with progressively

Duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza), a fast-growing aquatic plant rich in protein and bioactive compounds, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional aquafeed protein sources. This study evaluated the effects of incorporating 25-75% duckweed meal into a commercial feed on grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) over a 6-week trial. Fish meal, wheat starch, and vegetable oil was added in amounts to obtain isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets. Additionally, another grass carps were used for extended feeding until they reached approximately 1000 g, using the feed with the optimal duckweed inclusio
