Mercury tolerance and biosorption in bacteria isolated from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Arctic.

Mercury tolerant bacteria Pseudarthrobacter oxydans strain MM20 and Pseudomonas frederiksbergensis strain SS18 were isolated from the tundra ecosystem of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, where commercial exploitation of the coal existed till 1960s. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), mercury removal, mercury biosorption, and antibiotic resistance of these strains were analyzed. P. frederiksbergensis strain SS18 showed high tolerance (2.0 ppm) to mercury than P. oxydans strain MM20 (1.5 ppm). Mercury removal and biosorption studies were carried out in liquid media containing 1.0 ppm mercury. More than

Mussels (Mytilus spp.) in Svalbard contain microplastic particles in tissues: Implications for monitoring.

We examined the presence of microplastics in blue mussels Mytilus spp. from the intertidal zone of western Spitsbergen in Arctic Svalbard. The optical microscopy technique detected a total of 148 microplastics, with the highest concentration per mussel being 24 particles. Microplastics were found in 84% of the examined mussels. The microplastics ranged in size from <0.5 mm to 5 mm and consisted of fibers (83%), fragments (13%), plates (3%), and spherules (1%). The micro-Raman spectroscopy technique revealed four different types of polymers: polyethylene (67%), nylon-12 (17%), low-density polye

Exceptional X-Ray contrast: Radiography imaging of a Middle Triassic mixosaurid from Svalbard.

The black shales of the Middle Triassic Botneheia Formation in Svalbard are known for their fossil richness with abundant ichthyosaur remains and beds of the bivalve Daonella. Vertebrate remains from the Muen Mountain on Edgeøya are shown to have exceptional X-ray contrast due to a combination of sulphide and sulphate permineralisation and pseudomorphing. Radiography imaging of a previously described specimen, PMO 219.250, revealed new and spectacular details such as more carpals, teeth, and skull sutures. Teeth and skull characters are taxonomically significant. supporting the referral of PMO

Total mercury and methylmercury distributions in surface sediments from Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, Norwegian Arctic.

The total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) distributions in the surface sediments of Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, in the Norwegian Arctic were investigated in this study. The results showed that THg concentrations ranged from 9.11 to 86.73 ng g(-1), whereas MeHg concentrations had an average of only 0.11 ng g(-1). Factors that control the distribution and methylated transformation of mercury were examined, and the results suggested that the movements of ocean currents and glaciers affect the THg distribution. The total organic carbon (TOC) and N contents in the sediments were positively corre

Current-use and legacy pesticide history in the Austfonna Ice Cap, Svalbard, Norway.

The Svalbard archipelago in arctic Norway receives considerable semivolatile organic contaminant (SOC) inputs from the atmosphere. To measure the history of net SOC accumulation there, we analyzed the upper 40 m of an ice core from Austfonna, the largest ice cap in Eurasia, for several legacy organochlorine (OC) compounds and current-use pesticides (CUPs) including organophosphorus (OP), triazine, dinitroaniline, and chloroacetamide compounds. Five OP compounds (chlorpyrifos, terbufos, diazinon, methyl parathion, and fenitrothion), two OCs (methoxychlor and dieldrin), and metolachlor--an herbi

An annotated aerial imagery dataset for automated detection of harbour seals in Svalbard, Norway.

Arctic marine ecosystems are undergoing significant changes due to rapid climate warming, affecting species abundances and distributions. Harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), the most widely distributed pinniped in the world, are expanding their range northward in Arctic waters. Monitoring their ongoing distributional shift using traditional survey methods is logistically challenging. In particular, detecting and manually counting seals from aerial imagery is labour-intensive and costly. Integrating object detection algorithms into the analytical phase of surveys can greatly reduce post-processing

Serosurvey for Trichinella in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from Svalbard and the Barents Sea.

Blood samples of live-caught polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from Svalbard collected 1991-2000 (Period 1) and 2006-2008 (Period 2) and from the pack ice of the Barents Sea collected in Period 1, were assayed for antibodies against Trichinella spp. by ELISA. Of 54 cubs-of-the-year included in the Period 1 sample, 53 were seronegative, indicating that exposure to Trichinella infected meat is uncommon during the first months of life for polar bears in the Svalbard region. Of 30 mother-offspring pairs, 18 mothers were seropositive with seronegative offspring (n=27), suggesting (1) that maternal anti

Biomagnification of mercury in selected species from an Arctic marine food web in Svalbard.

Concentrations and biomagnification of total mercury (TotHg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) were studied in selected species from the pelagic food web in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Twelve species of zooplankton, fish and seabirds, were sampled representing a gradient of trophic positions in the Svalbard marine food web. TotHg and MeHg were analysed in liver, muscle and/or whole specimens. The present study is the first to provide MeHg levels in seabirds from the Svalbard area. The relative MeHg levels decreased with increasing levels of TotHg in seabird tissues. Stable isotopes of nitrogen (delta(15)N

Seasonal presence, movements and behaviour of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in Isfjorden, Svalbard.

Atlantification is increasing the inflow of warm, salty Atlantic water into the Arctic region. The fjords on the western coast of Svalbard are experiencing Atlantification, enabling boreal species, such as Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), to expand their distribution northwards. Monitoring the seasonal occurrence and behaviour of species like Atlantic cod in Arctic fjords is therefore key for understanding how ocean warming may restructure Arctic ecosystems and affect native prey species like polar cod (Boreogadus saida), supporting improved management under climate change. By using acoustic telem

Iron distribution in the liver and duodenum during seasonal iron overload in Svalbard reindeer.

Seasonal iron overload in Svalbard reindeer was studied by light and electron microscopy and by X-ray microanalysis. The hepatic iron overload was of two types. The first type was characterized by massive siderosis of both parenchymal and non-parenchymal cells caused by a diet very rich in iron but low in energy and protein. Hepatocytes contained a moderate amount of free ferritin particles in the cytosol together with numerous siderosomes. This pattern is similar to that seen in primary haemochromatosis and thalassaemia. Kupffer cells contained large quantities of cytosolic ferritin, sideroso

Echinococcus multilocularis in Svalbard, Norway: microsatellite genotyping to investigate the origin of a highly focal contamination.

Echinococcus multilocularis is a threatening cestode involved in the human alveolar echinococcosis. The parasite, mainly described in temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere was described for the first time in 1999 in the High Arctic Svalbard archipelago, Norway. The origin of this contamination could be due to an anthropogenic introduction from mainland Europe by domestic dogs or with the introduction of the sibling vole, perhaps from mainland Russia (St. Petersburg area), or with roaming Arctic foxes, known as the main definitive host of the parasite in Arctic regions. The genetic diver

Environmental characteristics of a tundra river system in Svalbard. Part 2: Chemical stress factors.

Bacterial communities in the Arctic environment are subject to multiple stress factors, including contaminants, although typically their concentrations are small. The Arctic contamination research has focused on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) because they are bioaccumulative, resistant to degradation and toxic for all organisms. Pollutants have entered the Arctic predominantly by atmospheric and oceanic long-range transport, and this was facilitated by their volatile or semi-volatile properties, while their chemical stability extended their lifetimes following emission. Chemicals present

Gastrointestinal parasites of arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) and sibling voles (Microtus levis) in Spitsbergen, Svalbard.

The arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), an apex predator with an omnipresent distribution in the Arctic, is a potential source of intestinal parasites that may endanger people and pet animals such as dogs, thus posing a health risk. Non-invasive methods, such as coprology, are often the only option when studying wildlife parasitic fauna. However, the detection and identification of parasites are significantly enhanced when used in combination with methods of molecular biology. Using both approaches, we identified unicellular and multicellular parasites in faeces of arctic foxes and carcasses of sibli

Import, export, and speciation of mercury in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard: Influences of glacier melt and river discharge.

The major sources and sinks of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in Kongsfjorden were estimated based on spreadsheet-based ecological risk assessment for the fate of mercury (SERAFM). SERAFM was parameterized and calibrated to fit Kongsfjorden using the physical properties of the fjord, runoff coefficients of Hg, transformation rate constants of Hg, partition coefficients of Hg, Hg loadings from freshwater, and solid balance parameters. The modeled Hg concentrations in the seawater matched with the measured concentrations, with a mean bias of 12% and a calibration error of 0.035. Th

Occurrence of integrons and antibiotic resistance genes in cryoconite and ice of Svalbard, Greenland, and the Caucasus glaciers.

The prevalence of integrons and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a serious threat for public health in the new millennium. Although commonly detected in sites affected by strong anthropogenic pressure, in remote areas their occurrence, dissemination, and transfer to other ecosystems is poorly recognized. Remote sites are considered as a benchmark for human-induced contamination on Earth. For years glaciers were considered pristine, now they are regarded as reservoirs of contaminants, thus studies on contamination of glaciers, which may be released to other ecosystems, are highly needed. Echinococcus multilocularis on Svalbard: introduction of an intermediate host has enabled the local life-cycle.

The taeniid tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis is here reported for the first time at the Svalbard Archipelago in the Norwegian Arctic. This new finding is interesting because the establishment of E. multilocularis is due to a recent anthropogenic introduction of its intermediate host--the sibling vole Microtus rossiaemeridionalis at Svalbard. The parasite itself has probably become naturally transferred to Svalbard due to migratory movements of its final host--the arctic fox Alopex lagopus between source areas for E. multilocularis in Siberia and Svalbard. We report macroscopically determin

Methylobacter arcticus sp. nov. isolated from a coal mine biofilm in the high Arctic Svalbard.

An aerobic methanotroph was isolated from a biofilm of coal mine Gruve 7 (Svalbard) and designated strain G7T. Cells of strain G7T were Gram-stain-negative, pink-pigmented and motile rods. Strain G7T could grow at pH 6.8 and at temperatures ranging from 4 to 21 °C. The genome size was 4.00 Mb with a (digital) DNA G+C content of 47.7 mol%. Strain G7T represents a member of the family Methylomonadaceae of the class Gammaproteobacteria. It displayed 94.6-99.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of the genus Methylobacter. Whole-genome comparisons based on average nucleotide ide

Serum biochemistry and haematology in wild and captive bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) from Svalbard, Norway.

BACKGROUND: Health assessment of seals in captivity include haematology and serum biochemistry measurements. Because such parameters differ between species, it is crucial to have species-specific reference values for the interpretation of clinical samples. Furthermore, differences in nutrition and environment, life cycles as well as seasonal/annual cycles and varying physiological conditions can potentially affect serum chemistry and haematology parameters. Blood samples from four captive adult bearded seals (initially caught as pups in Svalbard, Norway, now held at Polaria, an Arctic experien

Contaminants in Atlantic walruses in Svalbard part 1: Relationships between exposure, diet and pathogen prevalence.

This study investigated relationships between organohalogen compound (OHC) exposure, feeding habits, and pathogen exposure in a recovering population of Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) from the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. Various samples were collected from 39 free-living, apparently healthy, adult male walruses immobilised at three sampling locations during the summers of 2014 and 2015. Concentrations of lipophilic compounds (polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides and polybrominated diphenyl ethers) were analysed in blubber samples, and concentrations of perfluo
