Mechanisms of physiological gustatory sweating and flushing were investigated in 21 patients with a facial nerve lesion compromising parasympathetic outflow to the lacrimal gland, and in 13 patients undergoing diagnostic blockade of the stellate ganglion. Vascular responses and electrodermal activity (which reflects sweating) were monitored on each side of the forehead before and during gustatory stimulation with chillies or Tabasco sauce (derived from chillies). Vascular responses in the cheeks were also monitored in 14 patients with a facial nerve lesion. Sympathetic blockade increased gusta

BACKGROUND: Gustatory sweating is a common complication of parotid surgery. Injection of botulinum toxin A has been reported as a safe and effective treatment option for patients with Frey's syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 69 patients who had undergone superficial parotidectomy because of adenoma were evaluated with respect to the incidence of Frey's syndrome and treatment interest. Minor's iodine starch test was used to detect the affected skin area. Affected skin areas were documented using a digital camera; skin areas were evaluated morphometrically. A single injection of Botox

Damage of the auriculo-temporal nerve with consecutive Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating) can occur with fractures of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as a result of the anatomic proximity. A case of marked gustatory sweating as a rare complication of a mandibular joint fracture and alternation of therapy are reported.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin A has meanwhile become a proven method for treatment of gustatory sweating (focal hyperhidrosis, Frey's syndrome). Clear-cut recommendations regarding dosage of botulinum toxin A in Frey's syndrome are currently not available. The aim of this prospective randomized study therefore was to investigate botulinum toxin A with respect to its efficacy in Frey's syndrome, the ideal dose yielding maximal duration of the effect, and patient contentedness as well as unwanted side effects in patients of the Clinic of OMF Surgery at the Ruhr-University of Bochum.

Hyperhidrosis is a chronic condition characterized by excessive sweating. Recent studies report that it affects approximately 2.8% of the population and typically begins during adolescence. Gustatory sweating usually occurs after parotid gland injury or surgery, and both disorders can be debilitating for those who are affected. Both diseases respond very well to botulinum toxin therapy and this article will review the use of botulinum toxins, including the serotypes used, dosing, and complications.

Gustatory sweating is a rare disorder characterized by profuse sweating on the forehead, face, scalp, and neck occurring soon after ingesting food, which has been reported in diabetic patients. The mechanism is thought to be triggered by taste buds and not gastric stimulation. We report a case where gustatory sweating repeatedly developed on peritoneal dialysis that resolved on periods of hemodialysis. A 32-year-old woman with diabetic end-stage renal disease developed gustatory sweating shortly after beginning continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis despite excellent clearances. After 5 mon

Facial nerve involvement in cerebellopontine angle tumors, both during their development and after excision, may be expressed in irreversible dysfunction of the parasympathetic pathways. The exact location of the lesion along the efferent nerve fibers can be established through evaluation of the functional level of those organs supplied by the cholinergic motor secretory components. This report deals with a female patient in whom peripheral facial palsy developed shortly after removal of a right cerebellopontine angle meningioma. She had slight facial asymmetry and deafness in the right ear an

UNLABELLED: Frey's syndrome, gustatory sweating in the preauricular area, is an unpleasant phenomenon occurring during meals after surgery on the parotid gland. Recently, botulinum toxin A (BTX) has been shown to reduce the symptoms, but the variation in the reported doses is large.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of treatment with low-dose BTX in a case of Frey's syndrome over a period of 6 months.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 56-year-old woman was treated with 10 U Botox given as 20 single, intracutaneous injections of 0.5 U, one for each cm(2), 3 years after resection of the parotid gland. B

Quite by chance, when reading an old manuscript dealing with fistulae of the parotid duct, the author came across a clear description of what is now well known as gustatory sweating (Frey's syndrome). The incident which gave rise to this observation is recalled and the account is reproduced in the original text.

OBJECTIVE: Concave deformities and gustatory sweating are the most common complications that cause substantial patient dissatisfaction after parotidectomy. Various surgical methods to prevent these complications have been described. However, effective techniques have not been established, especially in patients with medium- to large-sized parotidectomy defects. We evaluated the utility of infrahyoid myofascial flap reconstruction of parotidectomy defects for the prevention of these complications.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series study in patients with a benign or malignant pa

BACKGROUND: Gustatory sweating syndrome (also known as Frey syndrome or auriculotemporal nerve syndrome) is thought to result from a lesion of the auriculotemporal nerve. A lesion of this nerve can lead to aberrant regeneration of nerve fibers to the sweat glands and blood vessels. The occurrence of signs outside the region of the auriculotemporal nerve prompted the author to search for another anatomical basis for this syndrome.
METHODS: The author dissected 46 great auricular nerves from their origin to the parotid gland and in the infratemporal fossa. The author investigated the different

OBJECTIVE: To measure patient-reported quality of life before and after botulinum toxin A treatment of post-parotidectomy Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A questionnaire concerning functional, social and emotional aspects of Frey's syndrome (14 questions, with responses on a zero to three point scale) was administered to 17 patients (13 women and four men) before and one month after intradermal injection of botulinum toxin A. Parotidectomy had been performed one to 19 years previously, for benign (n = 10) or malignant (n = 7) tumours, with gustatory sweating occurr

The treatment of gustatory sweating in diabetes mellitus is usually with oral anti-cholinergic drugs, but these frequently lead to unacceptable side effects. Glycopyrrolate is an anti-muscarinic agent that can be applied topically and is efficacious in gustatory sweating occurring in other conditions. In a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study, we assessed the value of glycopyrrolate in 13 diabetic patients with gustatory sweating. Sweating was measured by a sweat challenge, and diaries recorded by the patients throughout the 2 weeks of each treatment period. Compared to placebo, gly

OBJECTIVE: Gustatory sweating (GS) is characterized by profuse sweating during or immediately after ingestion of food and is known as a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of GS and to characterize the sweating in a cohort of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM) as compared with a control group.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 665 outpatients with T1DM and 505 outpatients with T2DM filled in an 8-point questionnaire about GS. Answers were paired with medical data from the electronic patient records to explore a

Gustatory sweating (or chorda tympani syndrome) in the submandibular region is a rare complication of cervical surgery. We report a 66-year-old patient who had been referred for the management of a squamous cell carcinoma of the mobile tongue. She was treated by bilateral neck dissection and bilateral resection of the submandibular glands. Bilateral gustatory sweating in the submandibular region developed 10 years later and was successfully treated with bilateral injections of botulinum toxin type A.

BACKGROUND: Frey syndrome is a frequent long-term complication following superficial parotidectomy, with reported prevalence varying widely according to diagnostic methods and follow-up duration. Although most studies focus on the presence of Frey syndrome, limited data are available regarding the influence of surgical technique on the extent or severity of gustatory sweating. METHODS: This single-center, prospective observational study included adult patients who underwent superficial parotidectomy for benign parotid gland lesions between March 2021 and March 2023. Frey syndrome was evaluated
