Most injuries and complaints encountered in swimming athletes are repetitive microtrauma or overuse, and successful management does not usually require surgical intervention. Rest and other measures to reduce inflammation are often required. Many injuries originate from faulty techniques or mechanisms, and an assessment must be made of the swimming biomechanics of any injured athlete to identify faults that may contribute to injury. It is also important to look at the total training programme of the athlete to identify other factors, such as weight training or dry land programmes, that may be

BACKGROUND: Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for toddlers within the USA. Keeping toddlers within arm's reach while swimming is recommended, yet many caregivers do not. Possibly, caregivers' attitudes are shaped by their expectations about whether they could quickly save a child. The aims of this study are to 1) explore caregivers' views of arm's reach pool supervision in various scenarios and 2) understand whether perceptions of arm's reach pool supervision are impacted by the caregiver's self-reported capability to swim the length of a standard pool.

PURPOSE: High-quality motile human spermatozoa were obtained following treatment of semen by simultaneous swim-up into medium and swim-down into an isotonic 40% Percoll solution.
RESULTS: This procedure was significantly better than the swim-up method and comparable to discontinuous Percoll gradient centrifugation. Recovery rates of motile sperm were 35% for swim-up, 65% for Percoll gradient centrifugation, and 73% for swim-up/swim-down.
CONCLUSION: The swim-down sperm was inferior to the swim-up sperm in its upward migration capacity but superior in morphology. Spermatozoa obtained by the s

Navigating and exploring the surfaces of bodies of water allow swimming robots to perform a range of measurements while efficiently communicating and harvesting energy from the Sun. Such environments are often highly unstructured and cluttered with plant matter, animals, and debris, which require robots to move swiftly. We report a fast (5.1 centimeters per second translation and 195 degrees per second rotation), centimeter-scale swimming robot with high maneuverability and autonomous untethered operation. Locomotion is enabled by a pair of soft, millimeter-thin, undulating pectoral fins, in w

To investigate the pathogenesis of swimmer's sinusitis, a group of 20 swimmers and 20 controls were interviewed and examined. Clinical examination was followed by rhinomanometry, sonography of the maxillary sinuses, a saccharin test to assess mucociliary transport in the nose, and a viable cytological sampling of the nasal mucosa. Anamnesis showed a preponderance of symptoms of sinusitis and chronic rhinitis in the swimmer group, as well as a reddening of the nasal mucosa and a swelling of the adenoids. Sonography showed mucosal thickening in the antrum in more cases among the swimmers. Rhinom

Orthopedic problems related to competitive swimming are rarely disabling, but can be problematic in preventing training and competition. Most problems are related to the shoulder and knee. Treatment is primarily nonsurgical and directed at relieving symptoms and allowing the athlete to continue with swimming practice. Treatment aids such as ice packing, anti-inflammatory medications, muscle stimulation and electrogalvanic stimulation, strengthening exercises, and static stretching are encouraged; upper arm bands and patellar-stabilizing supports can be adapted to training routines.

Public swimmingpools can be the source of infections due to micro-organism such as mycobacterium balnei, adeno and enteroviruses, the virus of plantar warts and molluscum contagiosum, the TRIC-Agent of swimmingpool-conjonctivitis and pathogenic fungi. The transmission of trichomonas vaginalis is considered unlikely-Water of pools, supposed to present satisfactory qualities by standard controls, was found to contain pathogenic staphylococci and pseudomonas aeruginosa. Effective preventive measures include the continuous recording of the redox-potential of the water, limiting the number of visit

OBJECTIVE: To describe chlorine levels in the air of indoor swimming pools in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) and relate them to other chemical parameters in the installation and to the health problems perceived by swimming pool workers.
METHODS: We analyzed 21 pools with chlorine as chemical treatment in Castilla-La Mancha. The iodometry method was applied to measure chlorine concentrations in the air. The concentrations of free and combined chlorine in water, pH and temperature were also evaluated. Health problems were surveyed in 230 swimming pool workers in these facilities.
RESULTS: The mean

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate swimming disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: During the pilot study, we examined 40 patients with PD, who were divided into two groups depending on the presence or absence of swimming disorders. The assessment on the Hoehn-Yahr scale in both groups ranged from 1 to 3. The severity of PD was assessed according to the unified Parkinson's disease scale of the International Society of Movement Disorders (MDS-UPDRS). The Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale, the Hospital Scale of Anxiety and Depression, a new questionnaire of freezing wh

In June 1982, an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness caused by Shigella sonnei occurred among residents of two counties in Oklahoma. A case-control study of cases and age and sex-matched controls showed an association with attendance at a southern Oklahoma lake (14/17 cases vs 3/17 controls, matched pair odds ratio [OR] 9/0, confidence interval [CI] 2.4-infinity). A survey of 85 persons who had visited the lake area showed that persons who had swum were more likely to have been ill with a gastrointestinal illness (50 per cent) than persons who had not swum (0 per cent); among those who had sw

Synchronized swimming is a low-injury competitive aquatic sport for all ages. It requires flexibility, kinesthetic awareness, and aerobic conditioning, with the ability to function anaerobically as well. Few acute injuries occur during participation in the sport, but overuse injuries are becoming more common as synchronized swimmers participate in longer, more strenuous workout programs. Most common among these injuries are knee pain associated with the eggbeater kick and shoulder pain associated with sculling. Synchronized swimmers are also prone to otitis externa ("swimmer's ear") and chemic

A 10% random sample of all bathers at a public swimming bath were examined for tinea pedis and verruca. The overall incidence of tinea pedis was 8.5% and of verruca 4.8%. The incidence of tinea pedis in 205 male adults was 21.5%, in 288 boys 6.3%, in 60 adult females 3.3%, and in 220 girls 0.9%. The incidence of verruca in juveniles ranged from 4.2% in boys to 10.5% in girls. It was clear that both infections spread within the baths, and since a relatively small proportion of users admitted to taking precautions to avoid contracting or developing infections it seems advisable that more publicity

Species of Balaenophilus are the only harpacticoid copepods that exhibit a widespread, obligate association with vertebrates, i.e., B. unisetus with whales and B. manatorum with marine turtles and manatees. In the western Mediterranean, juveniles of the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta are the only available hosts for B. manatorum, which has been found occurring at high prevalence (>80%) on them. A key question is how these epibionts are transmitted from host to host. We investigated this issue based on experiments with live specimens of B. manatorum that were cultured with turtle skin.

BACKGROUND: Swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE) has gained increasing attention in recent years. However, risk factors for SIPE remain incompletely understood, and existing data are primarily based on small-scale studies.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Which individual risk factors are associated with SIPE?
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a case-control study based on Sweden's largest open water swimming event, Vansbrosimningen. Data were obtained through interviews with individuals diagnosed with SIPE in 2017 to 2024 and through a web-based survey administered to control participants without

Swimming as a response of the sea anemone Actinostola new species can be elicited as a result of contact with the submarginal surface of another swimming sea anemone Stomphia coccinea. However, Stomphia does not swim as a result of contact with Actinostola. In all other known respects, swimming is caused in both species by the same stimuli, including certain starfishes, a nudibranch, and electrical stimuli. No agent that causes Actinostola to swim has been detected in extracts, rubbings, or dried matter from Stomphia.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Learning to swim reduces drowning risk and facilitates access to lifetime health benefits of aquatic activity. Amid cost-of-living pressures and disparities in swimming lesson access, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, governments have invested in strategies to foster access and participation. This study examines the swim school industry's perceived impacts of the NSW government First Lap voucher program to subsidise swimming lessons for young children.
METHODS: A mixed-methods approach analysed anonymous survey responses of 100 swim schools. Quantitative analysis

In competition, swimmers alternate between swimming on the surface and underwater; they therefore train in apnea to improve their tolerance to lack of oxygen during exercise, even though research in this area remains limited. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of underwater swimming on physiological and perceptual responses of competitive swimmers. Eighteen national level swimmers (700.25 ± 53.42 AQUA points) performed 6 × 25m maximal swimming efforts from a push start with 3 minutes rest in three different conditions: underwater (without breathing), surface (with normal breath
