Adventitious pestivirus RNA in live virus vaccines against bovine and swine diseases.

Live virus vaccines against bovine and porcine diseases were examined for the presence of adventitious pestivirus RNA or pestiviruses by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Pestivirus RNA was detected in the live virus vaccines against Akabane disease, Ibaraki disease, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, porcine parvovirus infection, transmissible gastroenteritis and Japanese encephalitis. Pestivirus RNA or pestivirus in the fetal bovine serum used to grow the host cells used to prepare the bovine and swine viral vaccines is a likely source of the contamination. Nucleotide se

Efficacy of vaccines against bacterial diseases in swine: what can we expect?

This paper discusses what can be expected with regard to efficacy of antibacterial vaccines used in swine, based on the present knowledge of pathogen-host interactions. First, vaccination against bacteria that mainly cause disease by production of exotoxins is considered. Vaccines containing the inactivated toxin or a non-toxic but antigenic recombinant protein derived from the exotoxin can be expected to provide protection against disease. The degree of protection induced by such vaccines varies, however, depending amongst other things on the pathogenesis of the disease. Vaccination against c

Spontaneous and diet-induced coronary atherosclerosis in normal swine and swine with von Willebrand disease.

We have observed that pigs with impaired platelet function in the form of severe von Willebrand's disease (vWd) are resistant to spontaneous and to diet-induced aortic atherosclerosis. However, it has been reported that vWd pigs are susceptible to coronary atherosclerosis produced by balloon-induced injury of coronary arteries combined with an atherogenic diet. We have evaluated the development of coronary atherosclerosis in normal control (NC) and homozygous vWd pigs in two prospective studies: 1) as a spontaneous process in five NC and vWd pigs receiving a regular diet from the age of 3 mont

Global Challenges and Advancements in the Management of Pivotal Porcine/Swine Viral Diseases.

Porcine/swine viral diseases pose substantial challenges to the global pig industry by affecting animal health and economic stability. This comprehensive review examines four major viral diseases impacting swine populations worldwide: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), African swine fever (ASF), classical swine fever (CSF), and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2). We investigated the etiology, epidemiology, clinical signs, and diagnostic methods for each disease, thereby providing an in-depth understanding of their complexities. Additionally, we assessed their global distributi

Ascariasis, respiratory diseases and production indices in selected Prince Edward Island swine herds.

The levels of production, ascarid burden and respiratory disease were measured on 15 purposively selected swine herds, and the relationships between the various measures of ascarid burden were examined. On each farm 30 randomly selected pigs were weighed and rectal fecal samples were collected at approximately 11, 15, 19 and 22 weeks of age, and at slaughter. Fecal ascarid-egg counts and duration of infection were combined to calculate a composite measure of ascarid burden called "lifetime burden". At the abattoir the carcass weight and levels of anteroventral pneumonia, atrophic rhinitis, and

General pathology of experimental swine vesicular disease.

Twenty-four minimal disease pigs were inoculated intracerebrally, intravenously or intradermally with an English strain of swine vesicular disease virus. In the skin, snout, tongue and tonsil the main lesion was a full-thickness coagulative necrosis of the stratified squamous epithelium. In the renal pelvis, bladder, tonsillar crypts and the collecting ducts of salivary glands and pancreas, epithelial degeneration with the formation of periodic acid-Schiff-positive material were consistent features of this disease. Histopathological examination alone could not be relied upon to differentiate b

African Swine Fever in Saxony-Disease Dynamics.

African swine fever (ASF) emerged in Germany in 2020. A few weeks after the initial occurrence, infected wild boar were detected in Saxony. In this study, data from wild boar surveillance in Saxony were analyzed. The analysis focused on the eastern districts of the state, where the disease likely spread through infected wild boar. Additionally, data from Meissen, located approximately 65 km further west, were examined. In Meissen, the disease emerged one year later, and a human-mediated introduction was suspected. To evaluate the progression of ASF in the two study areas over time, data from a

Respiratory diseases and allergic sensitization in swine breeders: a population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The daily occupation as a swine breeder involves exposure to several bacterial components and organic dusts and inhalation of a large amount of allergens. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of respiratory diseases and atopy in swine breeders compared with the general population living in the same area. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in an agricultural area of northern Italy that enrolled a random sample of resident male breeders and non-breeders. Demographic features, comorbidities, and presence of allergic respiratory disease were retrieved throu

Emergence of swine influenza A virus, porcine respirovirus 1 and swine orthopneumovirus in porcine respiratory disease in Germany.

Respiratory disease is a significant economic issue in pig farming, with a complex aetiology that includes swine influenza A viruses (swIAV), which are common in European domestic pig populations. The most recent human influenza pandemic in 2009 showed swIAV's zoonotic potential. Monitoring pathogens and disease control are critical from a preventive standpoint, and are based on quick, sensitive, and specific diagnostic assays capable of detecting and distinguishing currently circulating swIAV in clinical samples. For passive surveillance, a set of multiplex quantitative reverse transcription

Six underreported viral diseases of domesticated and wild swine in Africa: Implications and perspectives.

Pig production is increasing annually in Africa as it is recognized as a significant source of income, livelihood and food security, particularly in rural communities. Understanding the circulating swine pathogens is crucial for the success of this emerging industry. Although there is extensive data available on the African swine fever virus due to its devastating impact on pig production, knowledge about the presence of other viral swine pathogens on the continent is still extremely limited. This review discusses what is currently known about six swine pathogens in Africa: classical swine fev

[Use of electron microscopy for the rapid diagnosis of poxvirus diseases (smallpox) in swine].

For a rapid proving of the pig pox virus in the skin of naturally infected pigs, the simple electron microscopic method of negative staining was used. The result was checked by means of the finding of intracytoplasmatic inclusions in the histological sections and the proving of the presence of virions in the ultra-thin sections through the cells of the epidermis.

Foot-and-mouth disease in feral swine: susceptibility and transmission.

Experimental studies of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in feral swine are limited, and data for clinical manifestations and disease transmissibility are lacking. In this report, feral and domestic swine were experimentally infected with FMDV (A24-Cruzeiro), and susceptibility and virus transmission were studied. Feral swine were proved to be highly susceptible to A-24 Cruzeiro FMD virus by intradermal inoculation and by contact with infected domestic and feral swine. Typical clinical signs in feral swine included transient fever, lameness and vesicular lesions in the coronary bands, heel bulbs,

An unusual presentation of suspected oedema disease of swine in Kenya.

From a group of 11 recently weaned pigs, 4 were reported to be sick. Clinical examination of the sick pigs revealed marked dyspnoea, bluish-red discolouration of the skin, incoordination and difficulty in walking. Bacteriological examination of the gut contents of 2 pigs that had died earlier yielded pure cultures of haemolytic Escherichia coli. Post mortem examination of the remaining 2 pigs that died subsequently revealed progressive pulmonary collapse. One of these also showed subcutaneous oedema of the head and marked oedema of the mesentery of the spiral colon and oedema of the brain. Mic

African swine fever: morphopathology of a viral haemorrhagic disease.

Twelve miniature pigs were infected experimentally with the moderately-virulent Spanish isolate of African swine fever virus E75. The disease was reproduced acutely and subacutely, and six days after infection the animals showed severe clinical and pathological signs characterised by diffuse haemorrhages in lymphoid and non-lymphoid organs. An immunohistopathological study, using two different methods, and a monoclonal antibody (mAb) (18BG3) were used to analyse the distribution of the virus protein 73 (VP73) and IgM and IgG. VP73 was observed primarily in cells of the mononuclear phagocyte sy

Association of environmental air contaminants with disease and productivity in swine.

A cross-sectional epidemiologic study associating air quality with swine health was conducted on 28 swine farms in southern Sweden. Correlation of housing air environment to swine diseases and productivity (data collected over the preceding 12 months) were investigated. The most prevalent swine health problems detected at slaughter were pneumonia and pleuritis. In farrowing and nursery operations, the most prevalent problem was neonatal pig mortality. Several air contaminants (dust, ammonia carbon dioxide, and microbes) were found to be correlated with these swine health problems. Maximal safe
