A 30-year-old man had an acute onset of orthostatic lightheadedness, sweating disturbance, paroxysmal cough and loss of potency. These symptoms reached the peak in two weeks, and then remitted very slowly. He was admitted to our hospital for further evaluation when he was 39 years old. Neurological examinations revealed right Horner's syndrome, dry skin and impotence, but neither motor nor sensory system was impaired. No abnormalities were found on routine examinations of the blood and cerebrospinal fluid, motor and sensory nerve velocities, computed tomography and electroencephalography. On s

The rhythm in melatonin production by the mammalian pineal gland is generated by the circadian timing system. The components of that system which mediate the function are: (1) visual projections through the retinohypothalamic tract to the circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus; (2) the SCN which generates a circadian signal transmitted by SCN projections to the parvocellular autonomic component of the paraventricular nucleus; (3) paraventricular nucleus projections to the upper thoracic intermediolateral cell column; (4) preganglionic sympathetic fibers to t

We evaluated 2 patients with primary autonomic failure, without clinical peripheral neuropathy. One had primary autonomic failure alone (PAF), and the other had autonomic failure and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Direct intraneural recordings demonstrated a marked reduction of sympathetic efferent nerve impulse activity in the PAF patient. The patient with MSA had spontaneous bursts of sympathetic nerve impulses that confirmed the functional integrity of post-ganglionic sympathetic efferent neurons. Neurosecretory activity of these neurons correlated with the electrophysiologic findings. The

Immunohistochemistry revealed the presence of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-, neuropeptide Y (NPY)-, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and substance P (SP)-immunoreactive nerve fibers and SP-immunoreactive neuronal cell bodies in the pineal gland of the cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus). Abundant TH- and NPY-immunoreactive fibers were distributed evenly throughout the gland; less numerous CGRP- and SP-immunoreactive fibers were distributed in the superficial pineal and the stalk, but were scarce in the deep pineal. All the immunoreactive fibers were usually found around blood vessels. Since TH-

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compression neuropathy. The median nerve contains sensory, motor, and sympathetic fibers. Involvement of the different fibers of the median nerve in CTS may vary; hence, one of the sensory, motor, or autonomic dysfunctions may be dominant. Autonomic fibers of the median nerve consist of postganglionic sympathetic vasomotor and sudomotor fibers. An incomplete interruption of the axoplasmic flow may provoke a reflex that increases the sympathetic activity, leading to sweating, Raynaud phenomenon, and paleness of fingers. A complete sympathetic axop

Hypertonic solutions act in the central nervous system (CNS) to increase mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) by activation of the sympathoadrenal axis. However, adrenal nerve activity (pre- and postganglionic nerve fibers) has not been determined during central osmotic stimulation. Therefore, these experiments evaluated adrenal (AdSNA) and renal (RSNA) sympathetic nerve activity, MAP, and heart rate (HR) following CNS administration of isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic sodium chloride solutions in chloralose-anesthetized rats. Injection of isotonic saline (5 microliters) did not alter MAP, HR

Nociceptin (or orphanin FQ), the endogenous ligand for the opioid receptor-like 1 (ORL1) receptor, decreases blood pressure in the conscious and anesthetized rat. This study examined whether prejunctional inhibitory ORL1 receptors located on the postganglionic sympathetic neurons innervating the resistance vessels are detectable in pithed rats. In pithed and vagotomized rats electrical stimulation of the preganglionic sympathetic nerve fibers, injection of nicotine (2 micromol/kg) or noradrenaline (1 nmol/kg) increased blood pressure by about 30 mmHg. The electrically induced vasopressor respo

Afferent sensory inputs from the penis are carried by the dorsal nerve of the penis (DNP) to the spinal cord. Sympathetic outflow involved in the control of the urogenital tract is partly conveyed by the lumbosacral sympathetic chain. Our aim was to search for a sympathetic component in the DNP and relations between DNP afferents and sympathetic fibers conveyed by the distal sympathetic chain in anesthetized adult male rats. Stimulation of the lumbar sympathetic chain at the L4-L5 level (LSC4-5) elicited an evoked discharge on the DNP. This discharge was abolished by cutting the sympathetic ch

This article reviews the neuroanatomical studies on the distribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in neurons and nerve fibers innervating the submandibular gland. Specificity of NADPH-diaphorase activity as a histochemical marker of neuronal NOS is discussed in light of corresponding NOS immunoreactivity. Anatomical data suggest that nitric oxide may affect neural regulation of the submandibular gland through both sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory divisions of the autonomic nervous system. NOS-containing nerve terminals in the gland parenchyme are mainly vascular and either parasympat

When the postganglionic fibres to the nictitating membrane are stimulated in a cat treated with reserpine, the membrane contracts. The contraction is increased after the injection of eserine and is abolished with atropine. Thus the fibres stimulated appear to be cholinergic. When the splenic nerve is stimulated in a cat treated with reserpine there is similar evidence of the presence of cholinergic fibres; the spleen dilates, the dilatation is greater in the presence of eserine and is abolished by atropine. The hypogastric nerves when stimulated cause inhibition of the uterus of the virgin cat

Disorders of the autonomic nervous system are a frequent late complication of human diabetes. They have been extensively studied clinically, yet their pathologic aspects are still poorly understood. Also, reports on the autonomic nervous system in animal models for diabetes are scanty. Therefore we have investigated sympathetic preganglionic and postganglionic nerve fibers, vagal fibers, as well as sympathetic and enteric neurons of male Wistar rats 1 year after streptozotocin or vehicle injection. By light and electron microscopic morphology we observed: various degenerative changes in sympat

Asymmetrical facial sweating and flushing has been named the "Harlequin Sign". This is a rare feature, as evident from only 12 cases described up to date. The "Harlequin Sign" represents a local autonomic dysfunction due to a cervical sympathetic deficit located at the pre or postganglionic level on the non-flushing side. We observed slow onset and progression of the "Harlequin Sign" in a 19-year-old man, with preexisting slight miosis on the non-flushing side. The differential diagnosis included other forms of dysautonomia and a secondary origin of this partial Horner's syndrome. Both pupils

Ectopic excitation of nociceptive axons by chemical mediators may contribute to symptoms in neuropathic pain. In this study, we have measured the excitability of unmyelinated rat C-fiber axons in isolated segments of sural nerves under different experimental conditions. (1) We demonstrate in normal rats that several mediators including ATP, serotonin (5-HT), 1-(3-chlorophenyl)biguanide (5-HT3 receptor agonist), norepinephrine, acetylcholine and capsaicin alter electrophysiological parameters of C-fibers which indicate an increase of axonal excitability. Other mediators such as histamine, gluta

The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems both contain efferent and afferent neurons. The efferent pathway consists of preganglionic neurons with myelinated axons the cell bodies of which are within the central nervous system and postganglionic neurons with unmyelinated axons the cell bodies of which are peripheral. The preganglionic sympathetic fibers arise in the intermediolateral column of the thoracic and upper lumber cord segments, and reach the sympathetic chain whence postganglionic fibers are distributed to the whole body, where they have particular influence on the control of blood

Brief periods of stimulation of the preganglionic nerve fibers produced a severalfold increase in the content of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate in superior cervical sympathetic ganglia, whereas postganglionic stimulation did not. These and other experiments indicated that the increased concentrations of adenosine 3'5'-monophosphate were closely associated with the process of synaptic transmission. This increase occurred primarily in postsynaptic cells.

In athletic horses, diseases leading to lameness are of great importance due to the loss of performance and the resultant economic concerns. Although stifle lesions are frequent in the hindlimb, due to the large size and complexity of the joint, and although meniscal tears have been identified as the most common soft tissue injuries in this joint, little is known about the mechanism that causes the painful sensation and thus the lameness. The aim of our study was to highlight any peripheral fibres involved in meniscal nociception in five macroscopically sound cranial horns of the equine medial

The mechanism of cervical vertigo remains unknown. Stimulation of arterial vertebralis caused by osteophyte of the Luschka joint or segmental instability of the cervical spine was considered to be a potential factor contributing to it. Years of studies found that the ischemia of the vertebral artery is not directly correlated with the clinical symptoms of vertigo, and can not be used to explain cervical vertigo as a sole reason. As proven by clinical practical experience, the routine anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) procedure, in which the degenerative disc and posterior longi

Sudomotor function tests provide information on the functional state of the sympathetic system innervating skin, the postganglionic fibers of which are cholinergic. Various methods for sweat elicitation and its qualitative or quantitative detection are described here, but most practical combinations vary depending on the purpose of testing and possible pathophysiology of each patient; 1) hyperhidrosis vs. hypo- or anhidrosis, 2) central vs. peripheral or postganglionic lesions, 3) generalized vs. focal disturbances. When these are unknown, thermal sweating of the whole body is most informative

In continuation of earlier studies on the innervation of the sternomastoid muscle of the rat, a detailed morphometric analysis was performed on the unmyelinated axons of the nerve, in normal rats and after extensive cervical sympathectomy. In 4 normal rats an average of 314 myelinated and 319 unmyelinated axons were present. 42 days after surgery, the 3 animals showed Horner's syndrome and a highly significant 40% loss of unmyelinated axons. We therefore suggest that 40% of the C-fibers in this nerve are postganglionic sympathetic efferents and that the remaining 60% are type IV fibers, i.e.,

Sympathetic postganglionic fibers sprout in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) after peripheral nerve injury. Therefore, one possible contributing factor of sympathetic dependency of neuropathic pain is the extent of sympathetic sprouting in the DRG after peripheral nerve injury. The present study compared the extent of sympathetic sprouting in the DRG as well as in the injured peripheral nerve in three rat neuropathic pain models: (1) the chronic constriction injury model (CCI); (2) the partial sciatic nerve ligation injury model (PSI); and (3) the segmental spinal nerve ligation injury model (SS
