Acculturative Stress, Resilience, and a Syndemic Factor Among Latinx Immigrants.

BACKGROUND: The process of immigration and subsequent adaptation can expose Latinx immigrants to chronic and compounding challenges (i.e., acculturative stress), but little is known about how resilience factors and these stressors interact to influence syndemic conditions, intertwined epidemics that disproportionally affect historically marginalized communities. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe the influence of acculturative stress and resilience on the syndemic factor underlying substance abuse, intimate partner violence, HIV risk, and mental conditions. METHODS: Baseli

Could diet and exercise reduce risk of COVID-19 syndemic?

We present a hypothesis for increased sugar consumption and a lack of physical exercise as possible determinants of COVID-19 disease severity by impaired glucose metabolism, concurring into a syndemic. National data demonstrate that increased sugar consumption, a high daily caloric intake, and low levels of daily physical activity are independently associated with COVID-19 mortality. Further, genetic factors such as variations in the androgen receptor may compound the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle and increase the risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms in some patients. A diet high in sugar in c

Tuberculosis and Mental Health: A Poorly Addressed Syndemic in India.

INTRODUCTION: India bears a dual burden of tuberculosis (TB) and mental health (MH) disorders, both of which are underdiagnosed due to stigma and diagnostic challenges. These conditions frequently coexist, forming a syndemic that has significant implications for public health. OBJECTIVE: To explore the bidirectional relationship between TB and MH disorders, highlighting the impact on TB treatment outcomes, including higher risks of nonadherence, loss to follow-up, and mortality. This review emphasizes the need for integrating MH screening and support into TB programs to improve patient outcom

Compounding vulnerabilities: Syndemics and the social determinants of disease in the past.

OBJECTIVE: This article explores the theory and utility of a syndemic approach for the study of disease in the past. Syndemic principles are examined alongside other theoretical developments within bioarchaeology. Two case studies are provided to illustrate the efficacy of this approach: Tuberculosis and vitamin D deficiency in 18th and 19th century England, and malaria and helminth infections in Early Medieval England. MATERIALS: Public health studies of present syndemics, in addition to published bioarchaeological, clinical and social information relating to the chosen case studies. METHOD

Accessing the syndemic of COVID-19 and malaria intervention in Africa.

BACKGROUND: The pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused substantial disruptions to health services in the low and middle-income countries with a high burden of other diseases, such as malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on malaria transmission potential in malaria-endemic countries in Africa. METHODS: We present a data-driven method to quantify the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as various non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), could lead to the change of malaria transmission potential in 20

The burden of opisthorchiasis and leptospirosis in Thailand: A nationwide syndemic analysis.

Opisthorchiasis, caused by the foodborne trematode parasite Opisthorchis viverrini, is co-endemic with leptospirosis in the Greater Mekong Subregion. Socio-economic determinants, occupational risk factors, and reservoir hosts interact with the diseases in the threat to human health, but the situation has not been explored. We, therefore, studied the interaction between the diseases and their associated risks using a syndemic approach with nationwide data for Thailand. Methods included Bayesian mapping, principal component analysis (PCA), and nested correlation analysis to analyze the data for

Syndemics and salivary inflammation in people living with HIV/AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are disproportionally exposed to a host of structural, community, and individual-level physical and psychosocial stressors also termed 'syndemic conditions.' The current study aimed to examine the association between experiencing syndemic conditions and physiological stress response and be associated with bodily inflammation, including Interlekin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in PLWHA. DESIGN: Participants (N = 103) were recruited from a public HIV clinic. They provided saliva samples of IL-6 and CRP and completed psychosocial measures.

Syndemics: A theory in search of data or data in search of a theory?

The concept of a syndemic was proposed more than two decades ago to explain how large-scale social forces might give rise to co-occurring epidemics that synergistically interact to undermine health in vulnerable populations. This conceptual instrument has the potential to help policymakers and program implementers in their endeavors to improve population health. Accordingly, it has become an increasingly popular heuristic for advocacy, most notably in the field of HIV treatment and prevention. However, most empirical studies purporting to validate the theory of syndemics actually do no such th

Addressing the tuberculosis-depression syndemic to end the tuberculosis epidemic.

Tuberculosis (TB) and depression act synergistically via social, behavioral, and biological mechanisms to magnify the burden of disease. Clinical depression is a common, under-recognized, yet treatable condition that, if comorbid with TB, is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, community TB transmission, and drug resistance. Depression may increase risk of TB reactivation, contribute to disease progression, and/or inhibit the physiological response to anti-tuberculosis treatment because of poverty, undernutrition, immunosuppression, and/or negative coping behaviors, including substa

Airways Type-2 Related Disorders: Multiorgan, Systemic or Syndemic Disease?

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has recently undergone a significant paradigm shift, moving from a phenotypical classification towards an "endotype-based" definition that places more emphasis on clinical and therapeutic aspects. Similar to other airway diseases, like asthma, most cases of CRS in developed countries exhibit a dysregulated type-2 immune response and related cytokines. Consequently, the traditional distinction between upper and lower airways has been replaced by a "united airway" perspective. Additionally, type-2 related disorders extend beyond respiratory boundaries, encompassing c

What constitutes a syndemic? Methods, contexts, and framing from 2019.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to describe what methods were used for 60 articles on HIV syndemics in 2019, where they took place, what syndemic clusters emerged, and why this matters. RECENT FINDINGS: Most articles published in 2019 used regression analyses, and fewer used higher level modeling techniques, frequencies and descriptive, longitudinal cohort study, and social network analysis. Some employed ethnography, qualitative interviews, or were simply reviews. Most syndemic co-factors were substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, depression, intimate partner violence, sti

Ethnic disparities in psychotic experiences explained by area-level syndemic effects.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic inequalities in health outcomes are often explained by socioeconomic status and concentrated poverty. However, ethnic disparities in psychotic experiences are not completely attenuated by these factors. AIMS: We investigated whether disparities are better explained by interactions between individual risk factors and place-based clustering of disadvantage, termed a syndemic. METHOD: We performed a cross-sectional survey of 3750 UK men, aged 18-34 years, oversampling Black and minority ethnic (BME) men nationally, together with men residing in London Borough of Hackney. Syndemic effects of HIV risk behaviours: results from the NHANES study.

The aim of the present study is to use the syndemic framework to investigate the risk of contracting HIV in the US population. Cross-sectional analyses are from The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We extracted and aggregated data on HIV antibody test, socio-demographic characteristics, alcohol use, drug use, depression, sexual behaviours and sexually transmitted diseases from cycle 2009-2010 to 2015-2016. We carried out weighted regression among young adults (20-39 years) and adults (40-59 years) separately. In total, 5230 men and 5794 women aged 20-59 years were included in

EXPERIENCING SYNDEMIC: DISENTANGLING THE BIOSOCIAL COMPLEXITY OF TUBERCULOSIS THROUGH QUALITATIVE RESEARCH.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health problem that has become a crisis fuelled by HIV and the increasing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance. What has been termed the biosocial nature of TB challenges effective control of the disease. Yet, biosocial interactions involved in the persistence of TB in diverse settings are difficult to systematically account for. The recently developed framework of syndemics provides a way to capture how complex health problems result from the interactions between diseases such as HIV and TB, and harmful social conditions such as unemployment,

Resilience and syndemic risk factors among African-American female sex workers.

Research on street-based female sex workers documents a multitude of problems faced by these women, such as substance use, HIV risk, mental health problems, victimization, and homelessness. The presence of problems such as these is understood as a syndemic, or co-occurrence of two or more risk factors that act synergistically to create an excess burden of disease. However, the syndemic framework has not previously incorporated the examination of resilience to understand what protective factors enable female sex workers to cope with syndemic risk. Using 562 baseline interviews from street-based

Global research on syndemics: a meta-knowledge analysis (2001-2020).

BACKGROUND: Syndemics or synergies of cooccurring epidemics are widely studied across health and social sciences in recent years. METHODS: We conducted a meta-knowledge analysis of articles published between 2001 to 2020 in this growing field of academic scholarship. RESULTS: We found a total of 830 articles authored by 3025 authors, mostly from high-income countries. Publications on syndemics are gradually increasing since 2003, with rapid development in 2013. Each article was cited more than 15 times on average, and most (n = 604) articles were original studies. Syndemics research focused

Sex Workers and Syndemics: A Population Vulnerable to HIV and COVID-19.

COVID-19 has disproportionately affected vulnerable populations across the U.S. Street-based sex workers are one vulnerable population whose health and impact of COVID-19 have been understudied to date. The goal of this study was to evaluate findings from a community needs assessment with street-based sex workers on impact of COVID-19 on health behaviors and social circumstances. A brief survey was developed at a community-based harm reduction and recovery services organization. Surveys were administered by peer specialists to street-based sex workers during street outreach in April and May 20
