Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn and the Association with Preschool Asthma.

Rationale: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is characterized by respiratory distress in neonates, resulting from delayed clearance of fetal lung fluid. Although traditionally considered a self-limited condition, recent studies have indicated a potential association between TTN and an increased risk for respiratory infections during infancy. Objectives: This study investigates the possible link between TTN and healthcare utilization for asthma during childhood. Methods: This retrospective, case-control study used nationwide electronic records from Clalit Healthcare Services, Israel. The

Structural cardiac lesions in transient tachypnea of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is considered a benign disorder. Given its self-limiting nature, few studies have looked for associated pathology. This study explores the association of TTN with structural cardiac lesions. METHODS: Over a six-month period, all inborn term and late preterm neonates with TTN (without predisposing factors) underwent 2D echocardiography within the first ten days of life, after tachypnea had subsided. Equal number of neonates born during the same period, matched for birth weight, gestational age, sex, and mode of delivery but without tachypnea

Lung Ultrasonography to Diagnose Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound for diagnosing transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). METHODS: Ultrasound was performed by one export. Patients were placed in a supine, lateral recumbent, or prone position. The probe was placed perpendicular or parallel to the ribs, and each region of the lung was scanned. The scan results were compared with conventional chest radiographic results. RESULTS: A total of 1,358 infants were included in this study. We identified 412 cases without pulmonary diseases, 228 TTN cases, 358 respiratory distress syndrome

Further Genetic Unraveling of Persistent Tachypnea of Infancy.

BACKGROUND: Childhood interstitial lung diseases (chILDs) are rare, heterogeneous chronic pulmonary disorders that are often underdiagnosed due to their low prevalence and nonspecific clinical presentation. Persistent tachypnea of infancy (PTI), often referred to as neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI), is 1 of the most frequent forms of chILD, although its underlying etiology remains unknown. RESEARCH QUESTION: Can comprehensive genetic testing significantly improve diagnostic yield in patients with PTI/NEHI compared with limited testing of established genes? STUDY DESIGN AND M

Pulmonary function in children with persistent tachypnea of infancy.

BACKGROUND: Data on the prevalence and type of lung function impairment in preschool and school-aged children previously diagnosed with persistent tachypnea of infancy (PTI) are scarce. Therefore, this study aims to assess pulmonary function in this age group. METHODS: Children diagnosed with PTI over 3 years old were admitted for follow-up visits and healthy controls were enrolled. The study group included children who were able to complete pulmonary function tests (PFTs). Medical history, physical examination, and pulmonary function (spirometry, body plethysmography, impulse oscillometry, n

Effects of Inhaled Salbutamol on Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn.

BACKGROUND: One of the most common causes of respiratory distress in newborns is transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). Salbutamol is often suggested to increase the rate of pulmonary fluid absorption in newborns with TTN. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of inhaled salbutamol in TTN management. METHODS: This double-blind clinical trial was conducted on 52 newborns admitted to the neonatal ICU of Fatemieh Hospital of Hamadan, Iran. The newborns were randomly assigned to 2 groups of equal members: one group received 2 mL of nebulized sodium chloride concentration (control group), a

Fluid restriction in the management of transient tachypnea of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is caused by delayed clearance of lung fluid at birth. TTN typically appears within the first two hours of life in term and late preterm neonates and is characterized by tachypnea and signs of respiratory distress. Although it is usually a self-limited condition, admission to a neonatal unit is frequently required for monitoring and providing respiratory support. Restricting intake of fluids administered to these infants in the first days of life might improve clearance of lung liquid, thus reducing the effort required to breathe, improving

Inhaled procaterol for the treatment of transient tachypnea of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is a respiratory disorder that results from inadequate or delayed clearance of fetal lung fluid following delivery. At present, supportive care is generally practiced for the treatment of TTN. In this study, we focused on inhaled beta-agonists for the treatment of TTN, and the aim was to verify the efficacy and the safety of inhaled procaterol for the treatment of TTN. METHODS: Inhaled procaterol or normal saline solution was administered to infants. Respiratory rate and mixed venous carbon dioxide (PvCO2 ) were evaluated as the primary out

Antibiotic use in newborns with transient tachypnea of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Initiation of empiric antibiotic treatment for possible early-onset sepsis is recommended for late preterm and term neonates with respiratory distress. There is no evidence base to this approach. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of adverse infectious events in neonates with transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) managed with a risk-factor-based restrictive antibiotic use policy. METHODS: This is a single institution retrospective cohort study of neonates with primary diagnosis of TTN between 2004 and 2010. The relationship between antibiotic exposure and infectious outcom

Effect of tachypnea on oral temperature estimation: a replication.

The effect of tachypnea on oral temperature measurement was examined in 53 patients in a medical intensive care unit. This study was a replication of Tandberg and Sklar's (1983) study. The effect on rectal/oral temperature difference exerted by normal respiratory rate (20 or less respirations per minute) versus tachypnea (greater than 20 respirations per minute) was studied. A t test demonstrated that mean rectal/oral temperature difference between the groups was significantly different, t = -3.26, df = 49.45, p less than .01, supporting Tandberg and Sklar's findings. The present study found a

Congenital long segment tracheal stenosis presenting with tachypnea.

An infant born at full term presented with tachypnea, tachycardia and fatigue with feedings. Blood gases revealed hypoventilation. A rigid bronchoscopy using the Karl-Storz telescopic system revealed severe tracheal stenosis. Follow-up three-dimensional computerized tomography scans of the neck and chest revealed a long segment, funnel-shaped tracheal stenosis extending up to the left bronchial orifice. The patient underwent tracheal reconstruction, but died three weeks later from postoperative complications. It is unusual for severe tracheal stenosis to present without stridor, apnea, cyanosi

Neonatal tachypnea caused by diaphragmatic paralysis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic paralysis is typically associated with phrenic nerve injury. Neonatal diaphragmatic paralysis diagnosis is easily missed because its manifestations are variable and usually nonspecific. CASE SUMMARY: We report a 39-week-old newborn delivered via vaginal forceps who presented with tachypnea but without showing other birth-trauma-related manifestations. The infant was initially diagnosed with pneumonia. However, the newborn still exhibited tachypnea despite effective antibiotic treatment. Chest radiography revealed right diaphragmatic elevation. M-mode ultrasonography

Nonvagal tachypnea following alpha2-adrenoceptor stimulation in awake goats.

To assess the influence of vagal afferent feedback in the development of respiratory instabilities induced by alpha2-adrenoceptor (alpha2-AR) stimulation in the goat, we examined the ventilatory effects of clonidine, an alpha2-AR agonist, in awake tracheostomized goats before and after bilateral mid-cervical vagotomy. Prior to vagal section, systemic administration of clonidine (0.5-3.0 microg kg(-1)) induced a highly dysrhythmic pattern of breathing in all animals that was characterized by alternating episodes of tachypnea and slow irregular breathing patterns including prolonged and variable

Persistent tachypnea in children: keep pulmonary embolism in mind.

PURPOSE: Tachypnea in children is associated with respiratory disorders and nonrespiratory disorders such as cardiac disease, metabolic acidosis, fever, pain, and anxiety. Pulmonary embolism is seldom considered by pediatricians as a cause of tachypnea. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three children of various ages with persistent tachypnea are described: a girl after orthopedic surgery for kyphoscoliosis, a boy with nephrotic syndrome, and a neonate with Hirschsprung disease. Other causes of tachypnea were diagnosed and treated before pulmonary embolism was considered. RESULTS: Ventilation-perfusion

Differential diagnosis of syndromes with abnormal respiration (tachypnea-apnea).

Abnormal respiration with episodic tachypnea-apnea can occur in several syndromes (particularly, the Rett, Joubert, Mohr and Dandy-Walker syndromes). These syndromes are briefly reviewed. In the Rett syndrome, in contrast to in most other genetically determined syndromes, the onset of breathing abnormalities does not occur in the neonatal period.

New parameters on prediction of severity of transient tachypnea of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is a common clinical problem that often occurs in the first hours of life. Although it is considered to be a benign clinical course, some cases may have severe symptoms and require ventilation support. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between the mean platelet volume (MPV), nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs), right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), and the severity of TTN. METHODS: Patients with TTN were divided into two groups according to Silverman score (<7: group 1 [n: 34] and ≥7: Group 2 [n: 30]). The groups were
