Takayasu arteritis is the commonest cause of renovascular hypertension in India. The clinical and radiological features, complications and course of 83 patients (51 females, 32 males) seen during the period from 1972-1990 are described in this study. The age of the patients ranged from 5 to 53 years with the mean +/- SD of 26.9 +/- 9.7. Hypertension (n = 50) and the related symptom of headache (n = 40), dyspnea (n = 24), and giddiness (n = 20) were common at presentation. Twelve patients were in congestive cardiac failure. The symptoms of activity with fever and arthralgia were present in only

Takayasu arteritis is a common cause of renovascular hypertension in India. Sensitization to infective agents, particularly mycobacterium tuberculosis or autoimmune disturbances have been incriminated in its pathogenesis. Twenty patients of Takayasu arteritis along with groups of normal individuals, patients of essential hypertension, autoimmune disorders, tuberculosis, and healthy tuberculin reactors were studied. Besides detailed immunological profiles including LE cell phenomenon, serum complement C3 levels, antibodies to single (SS) and double stranded (DS) DNA, rheumatoid factor, lymphocy

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a large vessel vasculitis of unknown aetiology characterised by involvement of the aorta and its major branches. Tuberculous arteritis of the aorta is an uncommon condition usually secondary to the dissemination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection from the mediastinum and/or lung to the adjacent aorta; this may mimic TA. We report a case of a 23-year-old woman with cutaneous granulomatous vasculitis and saccular aneurysmal dilation of the aorta and large vessels, and highlight the findings shared by TA and tuberculous arteritis.

We reviewed the clinical features of 26 children with Takayasu's arteritis. In contrast to what is often seen in adults, in this age group inflammation of different systems is a conspicuous feature. Eighty five percent of cases had arterial hypertension. The high incidence of arthritis and heart failure provoked confusion with rheumatic fever. There was a high frequency of positive purified protein derivative (73%) and lymphadenopathy (38%) with a histological picture of caseating granulomas, suggesting a link between Takayasu's arteritis and an atypical mycobacterial infection. No improvement

Thirteen patients with Takayasu's arteritis had 30 pregnancies between 1970 and 1982. The 11 pregnancies occurring before the disease became clinically evident were uneventful. Eleven patients had 19 pregnancies after manifestation of the disease. Four ended in abortion, four in cesarean section, and 11 in uneventful vaginal delivery at term. There was no major obstetric problem apart from hypertension, and there was no maternal death directly related to the pregnancy per se. All 15 babies were born without asphyxia and congenital abnormality. The nine with some evidence of intrauterine growth

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu Arteritis (TAK) are two systemic granulomatous vasculitides affecting medium- and large-sized arteries. Similarities in GCA and TAK regarding the clinical presentation, the systemic inflammatory response and the distribution of the arterial lesions, have triggered a debate over the last decade about whether GCA and TAK represent two different diseases, or are age-associated different clinical phenotypes of the same disease. On the other hand, there are differences regarding epidemiology, several clinical features (eg, polymyalgia rheumatica in GCA) and t

Takayasu-Onishi arteritis (T.O.) is similar to Hutchison-Horton arteritis (H.H.) on histological, clinical, laboratory, and pathogenetic grounds. Both probably depend on immunitary dysreactivity, their different clinical expression being attributable to differences in the district involved and the age of the subject. Both are preceded or accompanied by rheumatism. An interesting relation can be made out between temporal arteritis and "rheumatic polymyalgia" or, more aptly, "rhizomelic polymyalgia" (Ballabio, 1975). The latter (of rheumatic origin) may accompany arteritis - Hamrin, indeed, has

INTRODUCTION: Chronic inflammatory diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), are accompanied by high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality secondary to accelerated and premature atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is correlated with chronic systemic inflammation independently of the factors for cardiovascular risk. Vasculitis of large arteries such as Takayasu's disease, are characterized both by chronic systemic inflammation and local parietal vascular inflammation.
METHODS: We prospectively analyzed in a case-control study, a group of 64 carriers of Ta

The objective of this study was to describe epidemiological and clinical features of Takayasu's arteritis (TA) among Arab populations and to compare it to other populations. We conducted a systematic review of reports about TA from Arab countries published in English and French until 2013. All published papers were reviewed including original research and case reports. There were 197 patients (176 females) reported in 28 publications that comprised 8 original research publications (with a total of 163 patients) and 20 case reports (reporting 34 patients). These patients were from countries wit

Takayasu arteritis (TA), a chronic inflammatory arteritis affecting the aorta and its main branches, is a rare condition mainly affecting young women in the second and third decades of life. Occurrence of TA in infants is extremely rare, with only less than 10 cases reported all over the world until date. We report a case of a 2-year-old girl who presented with hypertension and was diagnosed to have TA with bilateral renal artery stenosis and this is probably the youngest case reported from India.

A young pregnant woman, G2P1L1, was admitted for safe confinement at 40 weeks of gestation with Takayasu arteritis. She was diagnosed with Takayasu arteritis in 2016 when she had polyarthritis, hypertension and asymmetrical peripheral pulses. Her CT angiogram showed involvement of branches of aortic arch and coeliac trunk. She had mild pulmonary hypertension and was classified as type V disease (P)+. She was started on immunosuppressant medication and achieved a fair control of symptoms and disease activity. She gave history of treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis for 6 months in 2016 after wh

BACKGROUND: Aortic aneurysm (AA) is a severe complication of Takayasu arteritis (TA). This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, clinical and imaging features, management and long-term outcomes of AA in patients with TA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of TA patients with AA admitted to Fuwai Hospital from 1996-2015. Baseline clinical data and follow-up data of TA patients with AA were collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Thirty-nine (4.2%) of 934 patients with TA were identified with AA that was related to vasculitis. The mean age at disease onset was 31 ± 10 years,

Thorough clinical and imaging assessment of the arterial tree when a diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis is established. Glucocorticoïd as intiation therapy. Immunosuppresive agent should be considered as adjunctive therapy if resistance or dependance to glucocorticoïd therapy. Supportive care, antihypertensive drugs, glucocorticoïd induced osteoporosis preventive therapy, tuberculosis screening should not be forgiven. Monitoring of therapy should be clinical and supported by biological markers and imaging. Reconstructive surgery should be performed in the quiescent phase of disease.

We present two case reports of young women with Takayasu arteritis and cardiovascular complications. The first case is a female patient suffering from significant aortic valve regurgitation, the second case is a woman who presents with amaurosis fugax and develops acute chest pain with heart failure. In this report we review cardiac involvement in Takayasu arteritis.

PURPOSE: To illustrate the possible peri- and postprocedural complications of stent treatment for Takayasu arteritis and suggest ways of reducing these risks.
CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old woman with Takayasu arteritis had multiple stents implanted in the aortic arch (3 Memotherm) and main branches of the thoracic aorta (individual Corinthian stents in the subclavian and brachiocephalic arteries) following balloon dilation. She suffered reperfusion injury with cerebral hemorrhage following the procedure, preventing the use of anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy. Further cerebral infarctions/

The role of surgical therapy for Takayasu arteritis remains controversial. From 1973-1991, 23 patients with Takayasu arteritis have been treated at the University of Southern California. Twelve patients have required 17 arterial reconstructions for symptomatic complications of arterial disease refractory to medical therapy. Indications for operation have included renovascular hypertension (7), extremity ischemia (5), cerebrovascular insufficiency (2), dilated ascended aorta with aortic insufficiency (1), thoracic aortic aneurysm (1), and abdominal aortic aneurysm (1). Long-term clinical follow
