Technological Application of Tannin-Based Extracts.

Tannins are polyphenolic compounds naturally found in vegetables. Their presence in nature has prompted their historical use in many different ways. The revision of their traditional utilization has allowed their further modification aiming for an industrial application. Sometimes these modifications have implied the addition of harmful substances such as formaldehyde, classified as a carcinogen of category B1. In other cases, these natural tannins have been replaced by synthetic compounds that threaten human and animal health and damage the environment. Therefore, currently, both academy and

Development of tannin-inspired antimicrobial bioadhesives.

UNLABELLED: Tissue adhesives play an important role in surgery to close wounds, seal tissues, and stop bleeding, but existing adhesives are costly, cytotoxic, or bond weakly to tissue. Inspired by the water-resistant adhesion of plant-derived tannins, we herein report a new family of bioadhesives derived from a facile, one-step Michael addition of tannic acid and gelatin under oxidizing conditions and crosslinked by silver nitrate. The oxidized polyphenol groups of tannic acid enable wet tissue adhesion through catecholamine-like chemistry, while both tannic acid and silver nanoparticles reduc

Synthesis and characterization of tannin grafted polycaprolactone.

Tannin and biodegradable polyester have attracted increasing interest for biomedical applications. To improve their compatibility, a novel tannin grafted polycaprolactone (TA-g-PCL) has been synthesized via ring-opening polymerization reaction. The structure of the product is characterized with FTIR, (1)H NMR and GPC. GPC results show that the experimental molecular weight is far less than the theoretical due to complicated stereo structure and large steric hindrance of tannic molecule, but the polydispersity of the product is narrow. At 115.76:1 of molar ratio of CL to tannin, molecular weigh

Stimulation of granulocytic cell iodination by tannins and related compounds.

Tannic acid stimulated the iodination (incorporation of radioactive iodine into an acid-insoluble fraction) of human peripheral blood polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and human promyelocytic leukemic HL-60 cells, without affecting the iodination of 9 other cultured cell lines. The stimulation of both PMN and HL-60 cells depended on incubation time and temperature, and was significantly suppressed by myeloperoxidase inhibitors. Among chemically defined natural polyphenols, condensed tannins (epicatechin gallate oligomers) and monomeric and oligomeric hydrolyzable tannins potently stimulated PMN io

Potent surface antimicrobial activity of hydrolyzable tannins from Aleppo oak galls.

Surface antimicrobial agents provide a first line of defense against pathogens, especially for immunocompromised individuals. Insect-induced plant galls, tumor-like structures formed on plant surfaces by insect larvae, have long been used as sources of antimicrobial compounds. Building on existing knowledge, this study evaluated the surface antimicrobial activity of a standardized, ethanolic extract of Aleppo oak galls (AGE) on agar, abiotic, and biotic surfaces. Using a novel surface antimicrobial assay, we demonstrated that the anti-Escherichia coli, -Staphylococcus aureus, -Candida albicans

Effects of Aronia melanocarpa Tannins on Oxidative Stress and Immune Dysfunction.

Natural polyphenols, particularly tannins, are of interest due to their complex composition and multi-target biological activities. A highly purified tannin fraction was isolated from Aronia melanocarpa fruits, and its composition was characterized by HPLC-MS and IR spectroscopy. The Aronia tannin fraction exhibited comprehensive antioxidant properties, demonstrating superior DPPH radical scavenging activity compared to quercetin and a membrane-protective effect exceeding reference antioxidants. In vivo, Aronia tannins showed a delayed but potent antioxidant effect against cyclophosphamide (CP

Salivary Gland Adaptation to Dietary Inclusion of Hydrolysable Tannins in Boars.

The ingestion of hydrolysable tannins as a potential nutrient to reduce boar odor in entire males results in the significant enlargement of parotid glands (parotidomegaly). The objective of this study was to characterize the effects of different levels of hydrolysable tannins in the diet of fattening boars (n = 24) on salivary gland morphology and proline-rich protein (PRP) expression at the histological level. Four treatment groups of pigs (n = 6 per group) were fed either a control (T0) or experimental diet, where the T0 diet was supplemented with 1% (T1), 2% (T2), or 3% (T3) of the hydrolys

Natural Tannins as New Cross-Linking Materials for Soy-Based Adhesives.

Human health problems and formaldehyde emission from wood-based composites are some of the major drawbacks of the traditional synthetic adhesives such as urea formaldehyde resins. There have been many attempts to decrease formaldehyde emission and replace urea formaldehyde resins with bio-based adhesives for wood-based composites. Because of some weakness in soy-based adhesive, chemicals have been used as modifiers. Modified soy-based adhesives without any formaldehyde have been successfully used to prepare wood panels. To achieve this, different synthetic cross-linking chemicals such as pheno

Polyethylene glycol inactivates red grape pomace condensed tannins for broiler chickens.

1. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of inactivating GP condensed tannins using graded levels of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on feed intake, physiological, carcase, and meat quality traits of male Cobb 500 broilers. 2. Three hundred, two-week old, male Cobb 500 broilers (334.6 ± 21.43 g live weight) were allocated to 30 pens carrying 10 birds each. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated for grower (14-35 d) and finisher (36-42 d) phases by diluting a commercial broiler diet with untreated GP (PEG0) at 6.5% (w/w) or with the same amount of GP but pre-treated w

A new efficient tannin-based flocculant made by a new modification idea: multiple rounds of Mannich reaction with aminated tannins as ammonia chloride.

This research provided a new modification idea and made a new high-efficiency plant-based flocculant through the three rounds of reactions using tannin, formaldehyde, and ammonia chloride. Tannins as a concerned natural flocculant are mainly through a round of Mannich reaction to cationic modification now. This research provided a new cationic modification idea with the three rounds of Mannich reactions to obtain a modified tannin with a larger molecular weight and more complex structure. The synthesis and flocculation tests were conducted to study the effects of rounds of reaction, reactants

Tannin Reduces the Incidence of Polyspermic Penetration in Porcine Oocytes.

Tannin (TA) improves porcine oocyte cytoplasmic maturation and subsequent embryonic development after in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, the mechanism through which TA blocks polyspermy after IVF remains unclear. Hence, the biological function of organelles (cortical granule [CG], Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum [ER], and mitochondria) and the incidence of polyspermic penetration were examined. We found no significant difference in oocyte nuclear maturation among the 1 µg/mL, 10 µg/mL TA, and control groups. Moreover, 100 μg/mL TA significantly reduced 1st polar body formation rate

Tannin inhibits adenylate cyclase in airway epithelial cells.

Tannin, isolated from cotton bracts extract and implicated in the pathogenesis of byssinosis, inhibits adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) production and Cl- secretion in bovine airway epithelial cells in part by inhibiting adrenergic receptor binding. The purpose of this study was to determine whether tannin affected other parts of the adrenergic-cAMP signal transduction pathway by examining the effect of tannin on guanosine 5'-triphosphate (GTP)-regulatory pathways (G proteins) and on adenylate cyclase activity. cAMP production in confluent airway epithelial cells was measured in the

Bio-based phenolic foams from Anadenanthera peregrina tannins: Synthesis, structure and performance.

Tannin-based foams are natural-origin porous materials that offer promising alternatives to flammable synthetic foams due to their fire resistance and thermal insulation properties; however, their brittleness and relatively low mechanical resistance present challenges, necessitating improvements to these properties. This work aimed to investigate four types of tannin-based foams (ST, TT, TB, and TTB) prepared without formaldehyde, by using Anadenanthera peregrina tannins (ST) and the incorporation of polysorbate Tween 80 as a surfactant (TT), bamboo fibers as filler reinforcement (TB), and the

Chemical modification of tannins from Acacia mearnsii to produce formaldehyde free flocculant.

Flocculants and coagulants market is expected to grow in a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.9% between 2017 and 2022. The development of non-pollutant coagulants/flocculants aiming to replace conventional ones, usually toxic, has been extensively studied and one alternative is the possibility of obtaining tannin-based flocculants, compounds present in many plants and easily extracted. However, in order to use tannins as flocculants, their cationization is necessary, which is normally accomplished by Mannich reaction that requires formaldehyde addition, a toxic compound. In order to fill

Therapeutic potential and limitation of condensed and hydrolyzed tannins in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the accumulation of misfolded proteins such as α-synuclein. This review explores the therapeutic potential of tannins, particularly proanthocyanidins and hydrolyzable tannins from grape seeds, in alleviating Parkinson's disease pathology. Condensed tannins exhibit significant antioxidant properties, can cross the blood-brain barrier, reduce oxidative stress, upregulate antioxidant proteins, and prevent neuronal apoptosis. Hydrolyzable tannins, through their unique chem

Testing the effects of drying methods on willow flavonoids, tannins, and salicylates.

In this study, we compared the effects of several preservation methods on the secondary phenolics of the mature leaves of purple willow (Salix purpurea L., salicaceae) with results obtained with fresh leaf analyses. Conventional freeze-drying, in which the leaves were first frozen with liquid nitrogen and then placed in a freeze-dryer, produced substantial qualitative and quantitative changes in purple willow flavonoids and salicylates. Modified freeze-drying, in which leaves were put into a freeze-dryer without being prefrozen, gave concentrations that, for most secondary components, were com

Engineering lignin-tannin nanoassemblies for multifunctional and sustainable skincare.

Lignin is increasingly recognized as a sustainable raw material for the development of safe and multifunctional cosmetic ingredients. Nanoengineering strategies enable its transformation into uniform colloidal particles with improved dispersibility and functionality. However, reducing its intense color without compromising its intrinsic bioactivity remains a major challenge for cosmetic applications. In this work, a function-preserving particle design strategy was developed by synergistically combining lignin with tannins at the nanoscale to create fully biobased phenolic colloidal assemblies.
