The hock bone proportions in young Polish Warmblood horses (69) were studied based on x-ray image measurements done during official breeding horse performance testing. Six measurements were used to identify 4 width and length proportion indices. The radiological examinations were done before and after horse training, which consists of work with or without the rider at walk, trot and canter (40-50 min) with some light class (< 100 cm) jumping (<12 jumps) 6 days a week. Collateral ligament attachments in distal femora and distal tibiotarsi were examined in broilers on ad libitum and restricted feeding and in laying strain fowls fed ad libitum. Histopathological studies revealed morphological changes in ligaments of ad libitum-fed broilers which were less apparent or absent in other birds examined. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the response to various treatments and long-term outcome of foals with tarsal valgus deformities.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
ANIMALS: 39 foals with tarsal valgus deformities.
PROCEDURE: Data collected from medical records, included signalment, history, reason for admission, and clinical findings. Radiographic views of the tarsus were evaluated for incomplete ossification of tarsal bones and were classified as normal in appearance, type-I incomplete ossification, or type-II incomplete ossification. Extramedullary plasmacytoma with immunoglobulin-associated amyloidosis was diagnosed in a 10-year-old cat. The primary tumor was a large, circumferential mass of the right tarsal region. Metastasis developed in the regional lymph nodes, spleen, and liver. Permanganate-resistant amyloid deposits were associated with plasma cells in the primary and metastatic tumors. Treatment with prednisone and melphalan had little effect on the progression of the disease, and the cat died four weeks later.
