A meta-analysis of the validity of the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task in predicting young children's academic performance.

The present study represents the first meta-analytic synthesis of the utility of a widely used early-childhood self-regulation measure, the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task, in predicting children's academic achievement. A systematic review of the literature yielded 69 studies accessed from peer reviewed journals representing 413 effect sizes and 19,917 children meeting the complete set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Robust variance analysis demonstrated that the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task was a consistent predictor of children's academic achievement across literacy, oral language, and

Three-dimensional analysis of performance of an upper limb functional task among adults with dyskinetic cerebral palsy.

Patients with dyskinetic cerebral palsy (DCP) experience considerable variability in their purposeful movements due to involuntary movements that contribute to functional impairment. Movement analyses can demonstrate how the movements involved in bringing a mug to the mouth are performed by patients with DCP. Sixteen adults with DCP (29.63±4.42 years) and eleven healthy adults (24.09±3.73 years) performed six consecutive movements of bringing a mug to the mouth using their dominant arm. The mug was placed at 75% of each subject's maximum reach. Kinematic data were captured by 10 cameras and pr

The Role of Hearing Aids in Improving Dual-Task Gait Performance in Older Adults With Presbycusis: A Cognitive and Motor Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline is a common challenge faced by older individuals with presbycusis; their performance on dual-task (DT) activities is generally lower compared to those without hearing loss. However, the influence of hearing aids on nonauditory cognitive decline in this population remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the effect of hearing aids on nonauditory DT performance in older adults with presbycusis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included older people with presbycusis who used hearing aids (P&HA group), those with presbycusis who did not use hearing aids (PoHA

Meta-Analysis of Neuropsychological Studies in Panic Disorder Patients: Evidence of Impaired Performance during the Emotional Stroop Task.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have highlighted significant differences in verbal recall between patients with panic disorder (PD) and controls. These studies have highlighted that verbal memory and working memory could be impaired in PD. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present meta-analysis is to confirm this hypothesis, reviewing the studies that have investigated neurocognitive testing in PD. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search for studies published between 1980 and 2015 that reported cognitive measurements in PD patients and controls. Effect size estimates were compu

Decision-making in obesity without eating disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of Iowa gambling task performances.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that obesity is associated with impairments in executive functions, such as deficits in decision-making, planning or problem solving, which might interfere with weight loss in obese individuals. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of decision-making abilities, as measured with the Iowa gambling task (IGT), in obesity without eating disorders. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted to identify studies comparing IGT performances between groups of obese patients without eating disorders and groups of healthy control groups. The standardized mean d

Non-invasive brain stimulation for enhancing dual-task performance in individuals with chronic poststroke hemiparesis: protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Dual-tasking is commonly used to assess functional capacity in neurologically intact and poststroke populations. Stroke survivors often experience significant dual-task deficits due to cognitive-motor interference and neurological impairments that limit mobility and daily participation. Emerging evidence suggests non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) may enhance neuroplasticity and improve dual-task performance; however, findings remain limited and inconsistent. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of NIBS as a central nervous system priming technique on dual-task

Assessment of an interactive television that supports social connectedness among older adults living at home and in geriatric institutions: Usability and task performance analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Increasingly, geriatric institutions are adopting video calling services to promote social interactions between residents and their loved ones. However, a gap persists between the technologies used and the needs and abilities of older users. Interactive Televisions (iTVs) could be part of the solution as they provide a familiar and accessible way to strengthen the relationship between residents and their environment (family, friends, professionals). METHODS: User tests were conducted to evaluate the ability of older adults (OAs) from different place of living to use iTV. A total

Performance in emotion recognition and theory of mind tasks in social anxiety and generalized anxiety disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Social cognition impairments may be associated with poor functional outcomes, symptoms, and disability in social anxiety disorder (SAD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This meta-analysis aims to determine if emotion recognition and theory of mind (ToM) are impaired in SAD or GAD compared to healthy controls. A systematic review was conducted in electronic databases (PubMed, PsycNet, and Web of Science) to retrieve studies assessing emotion recognition and/or ToM in patients with SAD or GAD, compared to healthy controls, up to March 2022. Meta-analyses using random-effects models were c

Cortical Activation During Finger Tapping Task Performance in Parkinson's Disease Is Influenced by Priming Conditions: An ALE Meta-Analysis.

The finger tapping task (FTT) is commonly used in the evaluation of dyskinesia among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Past research has indicated that cortical activation during FTT is different between self-priming and cue-priming conditions. To evaluate how priming conditions affect the distribution of brain activation and the reorganization of brain function, and to investigate the differences in brain activation areas during FTT between PD patients and healthy control (HC) participants, we conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis on the existing literature.

Brain connectivity under light sedation with midazolam and ketamine during task performance and the periodic experience of pain: Examining concordance between different approaches for seed-based connectivity analysis.

This work focused on functional connectivity changes under midazolam and ketamine sedation during performance of a memory task, with the periodic experience of pain. To maximize ability to compare to previous and future work, we performed secondary region of interest (ROI)-to-ROI functional connectivity analyses on these data, using two granularities of scale for ROIs. These findings are compared to the results of a previous seed-to-voxel analysis methodology, employed in the primary analysis. Healthy adult volunteers participated in this randomized crossover 3 T functional MRI study under no

A Semantic Relatedness Model for the Automatic Cluster Analysis of Phonematic and Semantic Verbal Fluency Tasks Performed by People With Parkinson Disease: Prospective Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Phonematic and semantic verbal fluency tasks (VFTs) are widely used to capture cognitive deficits in people with neurodegenerative diseases. Counting the total number of words produced within a given time frame constitutes the most commonly used analysis for VFTs. The analysis of semantic and phonematic word clusters can provide additional information about frontal and temporal cognitive functions. Traditionally, clusters in the semantic VFT are identified using fixed word lists, which need to be created manually, lack standardization, and are language specific. Furthermore, it is

Human-machine-human interaction in motor control and rehabilitation: a review.

BACKGROUND: Human-human (HH) interaction mediated by machines (e.g., robots or passive sensorized devices), which we call human-machine-human (HMH) interaction, has been studied with increasing interest in the last decade. The use of machines allows the implementation of different forms of audiovisual and/or physical interaction in dyadic tasks. HMH interaction between two partners can improve the dyad's ability to accomplish a joint motor task (task performance) beyond either partner's ability to perform the task solo. It can also be used to more efficiently train an individual to improve the
