Taste disorders and alopecia in myasthenia gravis.

BACKGROUND: Non-motor symptoms in myasthenia gravis (MG) are rarely confirmed. Although there are some small cohort studies, a large-systemic survey has not yet been performed. METHODS: We investigated the incidence and clinical characteristics of patients with MG who had taste disorders and alopecia using data of 1710 patients with MG enrolled in the Japan MG Registry 2021. RESULTS: Among them, 104 (6.1%) out of 1692 patients and 138 (8.2%) out of 1688 patients had histories of taste disorders and alopecia, respectively. Among the patients with MG, taste disorders were significantly more co

Smell and Taste Disorders in Primary Care.

Disorders of smell and taste are reported by approximately one-fifth of people 40 years and older, and one-third of people 80 years and older. These disorders affect quality of life and the ability to identify smoke and toxins. Smell and taste disorders can be early signs of dementia or Parkinson disease and are associated with increased mortality. Dysfunction may be apparent or may develop insidiously. Screening questionnaires are available, but many patients are unaware of their disorder. Most smell and taste disorders are due to sinonasal disease but also could be caused by smoking, medicat

Post-traumatic taste disorders: a case series.

Since 1800s there are reports of post-traumatic anosmia, but few studies investigated post-traumatic gustatory deficit and adopted validated evaluation tests. Peripheral and/or central mechanisms may be involved in the genesis of post-traumatic gustatory dysfunction. Beyond a reduction/loss (hypogeusia/ageusia) of gustatory function following a trauma, qualitative taste changes (dysgeusia) may occur. Especially when persistent, taste deficits might be particularly relevant for patient's quality of life and activities of daily life, but knowledge on this topic is limited. Fifty-three consecutiv

Deciphering Taste Disorders: Mechanistic Insights and Nonclinical Evaluation.

Drug-induced taste dysfunctions are an underrecognized yet clinically significant class of adverse effects that can substantially impair patients' quality of life and compromise adherence to therapeutic regimens. Despite the potential for many pharmacologic agents to alter taste perception, these effects are frequently overlooked in both clinical practice and drug development. Gustatory disorders are rarely assessed in toxicology studies, and current knowledge regarding the pathophysiology of dysgeusia, the relevant organ systems involved, and nonclinical evaluation methods remains limited. [Post-traumatic taste and smell disorders: forensic aspects].

The impact of anosmia or ageusia may be considerable for some occupations. Expert assessment shows how difficult it is to prove the diagnosis. A specialist is usually needed to demonstrate the asserted disorder. Damage compensation is based on the patient's occupation and coverage.

[Changed taste perception in patients with eating disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Taste is a hereditary trait and affects eating and dietary behavior. The tongue's papillae represent the first line of the gustatory apparatus to provide information about taste. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the number of fungiform papillae (fPap) in relationship with 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) sensitivity and body mass index (BMI) in patients with eating disorders. METHODS: 18 female patients with eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia nervosa; age 14-20 yrs.) and 15 age-matched female controls were included. The number of fPap was quantified. Bitter taste

Smell and taste disorders: a primary care approach.

Smell and taste disorders are common in the general population, with loss of smell occurring more frequently. Although these disorders can have a substantial impact on quality of life and may represent significant underlying disease, they are often overlooked by the medical community. Patients may have difficulty recognizing smell versus taste dysfunction and frequently confuse the concepts of "flavor" and "taste." While the most common causes of smell disturbance are nasal and sinus disease, upper respiratory infection and head trauma, frequent causes of taste disturbance include oral infecti

Assessment of patients with taste and smell disorders.

The evaluation of patients with taste and smell complaints is difficult without standardized quantitative methods of assessment. This paper summarizes recent developments in the evaluation of chemosensory patients. Evaluation must begin with a careful medical history, since certain questions can help in establishing an etiology. Several recent advances have been made in the development of standardized tests for the assessment of taste and olfactory function. Smell can be evaluated with a combination of butanol threshold and odor identification (University of Connecticut test battery) and with

[Classification and definition of smell and taste disorders].

The smell and taste disorders are defined in terms due to two principles - the type and site of lesion. The quantitative dysosmias (anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia) correspond to the quantitative dysgeusias (ageusia, hypogeusia, hypergeusia) and the qualitative dysosmias (parosmia, pseudo-osmia, phantosmia, agnosmia) correspond to the qualitative dysgeusias (parageusia, pseudogeusia, phantogeusia, agnogeusia). Due to the site of lesion we can differentiate between respiratory, epithelial, combined, neural, and central dysosmias as well as epithelial, neural, and central dysgeusias. Typical examp

Isolated taste disorders in patients referred to a flavor clinic with taste and smell loss.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Approximately five percent of the general population are suffering from taste disorders. Usually, subjective loss of taste is caused by smell disorders; thus, isolated loss of the sense of taste is relatively rare. Despite the influence on quality of life, isolated taste disorders (ITD) are sparsely represented in literature and clinical research. In particular, there is need for sufficient diagnostic and treatment algorithms. Aim of study is to add further information to the sparse literature on ITD and suggest an appropriate diagnostic algorithm for ITD. METHODS: We pres

Diagnosis and treatment of taste disorders in Japan.

Though 270,000 patients with complaints of taste abnormalities visited medical institutions annually in 2019 survey, there are no drugs for the treatment of taste disorders that are covered by health insurance in Japan. In the survey, the number of patients with taste disorders was correlated with age, and the need for medical treatment for taste disorders is expected to increase in the future because of the super-aging society. The pathophysiology of taste disorders varies widely. There is an obvious need to decide the site and the causes of the disorder and understand the mechanism, by perfo

[Clinical analysis of 1059 patients with taste disorders].

Taste disorders are caused by several factors, and there have been few reports concerning the clinical course of taste disorders. In this study, patients with taste disorders were classified into 10 groups according to causes, and they were retrospectively studied in terms of therapeutic effects. In total, 1059 patients (412 men and 647 women, mean age: 60.0 years) who complained of taste disorders were reviewed in our clinic. The patients were asked detailed questions about their history of symptoms, and their emotional status was assessed using a self-rating depression scale. In all subjects

Vestibular and taste disorders after bilateral cochlear implantation.

The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of vestibular receptor deficiency and taste disorders after bilateral cochlear implantation in postlingually deafened patients and to find out whether the risk for these complications is higher for the second implantation. In a retrospective cohort study, we examined 20 patients (11-58 years, mean age 41.5 years), implanted sequentially between 2000 and 2007 (mean period between cochlear implantation 32.9 ± 25 months). Pre- and postoperative vestibular testing was performed by subjective rating [Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI)],

A study about the frequency of taste disorders.

Although 5% of the general population exhibit a functional anosmia, little is known about the frequency of gustatory disorders. Whenever taste function has been tested within large sociodemographic studies, so far only short test versions were applied making the interpretation difficult. Using two psychophysical taste tests, the validated "taste strips" and suprathreshold taste solutions of the four basic tastes sweet, sour, salty and bitter we investigated 761 healthy subjects within the age range of 5-89 years. Prior to testing, all subjects rated their taste function. According to testing w

The role of zinc in the treatment of taste disorders.

In the 1990s the number of patients diagnosed with taste disorders in the USA and Japan was over one million people each year, and the number is increasing annually. Taste disorders are caused by several factors such as genetic disease, head trauma, structural changes, glossodynia, cancer, change of lifestyle, and more. The role of zinc in the treatment of taste disorders has been studied since the oral administration of zinc by patients was reported to improve their taste disorders. Carbonic anhydrase (CA), a zinc metalloenzyme, has also been studied in association with taste disorders, since

Treatments for smell and taste disorders: A critical review.

A key concern of both the patient and physician is whether treatment is available that will eliminate or quell a given chemosensory disturbance. In cases where obvious oral, nasal, or intracranial pathology is involved, rational straightforward approaches to treatment are often available. In cases where damage to the sensory pathways is secondary to chronic inflammatory disease, trauma, viral invasion, toxic exposure, or unknown causes, the direction for therapy is more challenging. Indeed, many chemosensory disorders, if present for any period of time, cannot be reversed, while others spontan

Neural correlates of taste reward value across eating disorders.

Individuals with eating disorders (ED) make extreme food choices, raising the possibility of altered food-value computation. We utilized an associative taste reward learning paradigm to test whether value signaling differs between participants with EDs vs. healthy controls (HC). We followed up on previous work examining prediction error (PE) signaling, which is a brain response to violation of a learned reward contingency. Expected value (EV) signal is a trial-by-trial assessment of reward significance accounting for error signaling, reward-likelihood, and learning rate. Adult female participa

[Mechanisms and Management of COVID-19-Associated Taste Disorders].

The taste buds in the human tongue contain specialized cells that generate taste signals when they are stimulated. These signals are then transmitted to the central nervous system, allowing the human body to distinguish nutritious substances from toxic or harmful ones. This process is critical to the survival of humans and other mammals. A number of studies have shown that dysgeusia, or taste disorder, is a common complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which can severely affect patients' nutritional
