Resident communication practices during interpreter-mediated family-centered rounds.

Pediatric residents are required to learn and demonstrate communication skills applicable to a range of cultural backgrounds, including patients and families who use a language other than English. Our study utilized an observational tool, the adapted Faculty Observer Rating Scale (aFORS), to characterize communication practices during interpreter-mediated family-centered rounds and compare behaviors by patient language and interpreter modality. Following 31 observations, we identified four behaviors performed <75% of the time: (1) providing clinical context to the interpreter, (2) allowing pat

Aligning Care Through Conversation: Integrating Communication at Key Turning Points in Geriatric Oncology.

For older adults with cancer, communication is among the most critical aspects of care. This commentary examines two communication timepoints that may confer disproportionate clinical impact: the initial consultation and major change points, such as progression, hospitalization, or functional decline. We argue that a validating and clear communication style-offering clear recommendations while honoring patient values-anchors trust and improves outcomes. The initial consultation should focus as much on understanding the person as the pathology, incorporating functional status, caregiver capacit

Health Literacy and Communication in Stroke Prevention, Management, and Recovery: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Health literacy is a critical component of high-quality stroke care. Across the continuum from prevention through recovery, health literacy is strongly associated with functional outcomes and stroke-related morbidity. Despite its importance, it is often overlooked, leaving patients and caregivers overwhelmed by communication demands that exceed their capacity. These mismatches are especially pronounced among individuals with stroke-related cognitive or language impairments, limited English proficiency, socioeconomic disadvantage, or limited digital literacy. This scientific statement synthesiz

CHA2DS2-VASc score can guide the screening of atrial fibrillation - cross-sectional study in a geriatric ward.

OBJECTIVE: Health literacy is a critical determinant of health care outcomes, particularly in pediatric inpatient care, where hospitalists play a pivotal role. However, hospitalists often face challenges in effectively addressing health literacy with patients and caregivers. This study evaluated pediatric hospitalists' attitudes, practices, perceived effectiveness of commonly used communication techniques, and barriers to health-literate communication. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional survey through the Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings (PRIS) network from July to S

Watchful waiting as a strategy to reduce low-value spinal imaging: study protocol for a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with acute low back pain frequently request diagnostic imaging, and clinicians feel pressure to acquiesce to such requests to sustain patient trust and satisfaction. Spinal imaging in patients with acute low back pain poses risks from diagnostic evaluation of false-positive findings, patient labeling and anxiety, and unnecessary treatment (including spinal surgery). Watchful waiting advice has been an effective strategy to reduce some low-value treatments, and some evidence suggests a watchful waiting approach would be acceptable to many patients requesting diagnostic test

Health literacy in perioperative care: toward better shared decision-making through navigation and communication design.

Perioperative care asks patients and their families or caregivers to make decisions and follow important instructions within a short and stressful period. They may need to understand risks and options, follow fasting and medication instructions, move across multiple appointments and care transitions, and manage recovery after discharge while anxious, tired, or in pain. Shared decision-making is increasingly emphasized in perioperative care, but meaningful participation depends on health literacy. In this setting, health literacy includes personal health literacy, navigational health literacy,

Beyond survival: empowering adults with congenital heart disease through communication and co-designed education.

Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) live with lifelong clinical uncertainty, recurrent interventions, and complex decision-making demands. As survival improves, optimal ACHD care increasingly requires approaches that extend beyond biomedical management to support patient empowerment and engagement. This review examines contemporary strategies to support patient empowerment and engagement in ACHD, with a particular focus on communication-based interventions, nurse-led education, and co-designed tools that facilitate shared decision-making. We synthesise contemporary evidence alongside c

"Language barriers and patient safety in supportive care: Two case reports bridging system-level gaps".

OBJECTIVES: Patients with non-English language preference (NELP) face significant barriers to safe and effective communication in palliative and supportive care. These barriers compromise quality, delay care, and heighten the risk of unmet psychosocial needs, particularly when compounded by health literacy concerns and limited access to translated resources. METHODS: We describe two Spanish-speaking patients with advanced cancer whose inpatient and outpatient supportive care was complicated by language barriers, leading to communication gaps, including symptom misinterpretation and inadequate

Design and implementation of a theory of planned behavior-based nutrition education intervention for adolescent girls in rural Nepal: a school-based cluster-randomized controlled trial.

Adolescence is a pivotal period of physical, psychological, and cognitive development during which individuals are highly vulnerable to nutritional deficiency. Undernutrition, overweight/obesity, and anemia are prominent public health concerns in low- and middle-income countries, including Nepal. Anemia affects nearly one-quarter of individuals aged 10-24 years globally, with a disproportionately high burden in resource-constrained settings. This study primarily aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a theory-driven school-based nutrition education intervention in improving dietary behaviors, h

Health Literacy in Pediatric Care: Evidence, Gaps, and Opportunities.

Health literacy is a foundational component of providing accessible pediatric care, influencing whether families can understand, access, and use health information. As families increasingly rely on online health resources, health literacy skills applied to digital information, or e-health literacy, has become an evolving dimension of pediatric health literacy. The concept of health literacy extends beyond an individual's abilities, intersecting with the demands placed on individuals by healthcare systems. There is a growing focus on organizational health literacy (OHL), which reflects how effe

Preventing Medication Errors in Paediatrics: A Narrative Review.

Paediatric medication errors remain a major and preventable cause of patient harm worldwide. Children are particularly vulnerable to medication-related adverse events because of weight-based dosing requirements, age-dependent pharmacokinetics, off-label medication use, communication limitations, and the need for complex drug preparation and administration processes. High-risk settings such as neonatal intensive care units, emergency departments, oncology services, and transitions of care are associated with particularly high rates of prescribing and administration errors. This narrative review

Cluster randomized controlled trial testing the effectiveness of a self-management intervention using the teach-back method for people with heart failure.

In this study, we examined the effectiveness of a self-management intervention delivered to people with heart failure in Vietnam. It used teach-back, a cyclical method of teaching content, checking comprehension, and re-teaching to improve understanding. A single-site cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted, and six hospital wards were randomized into two study groups. On the basis of ward allocation, 140 participants received either usual care or the teach-back heart failure self-management intervention plus usual care. The intervention involved, prior to discharge, an individual ed
