Traumatic brain injuries in paediatric patients: individual vs. team sports-related hospitalizations.

Paediatric sport participation continues to increase in the United States, with a corresponding increase in sports-related concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). It is important to recognize which sports are at elevated risk and identify risk factors for hospital admission and length of stay (LOS). Paediatric patients (ages 5-18) from 2008 to 2014 were identified from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) National Inpatient Sample (NIS). Eight hundred and ninety-four patients included those who were hospitalized with a TBI resulting from participation in an individual (45

Employing Standardised Methods to Compare Injury Risk Across Seven Youth Team Sports.

Injury surveillance systems seek to describe injury risk for a given sport, in order to inform preventative strategies. This often leads to comparisons between studies, although these inferences may be inappropriate, considering the range of methods adopted. This study aimed to describe the injury epidemiology of seven youth sports, enabling valid comparisons of injury risk. Consistent methods were employed across seven sports [male American football, basketball, soccer, rugby league, rugby union; female soccer and rugby union] at a high school in England. A 24-hour time-loss injury definition

Injury and illness surveillance monitoring in team sports: a framework for all.

BACKGROUND: Sport-related injuries and illnesses can negatively impact athlete welfare at all standards of participation in team sports. Injury and illness surveillance (IIS), and the development of monitoring systems, initiates the sequence of injury and illness prevention. Operational IIS monitoring systems help to appraise epidemiological estimates of injury and illness incidence and burden in various athlete populations. However, the methodological underpinnings of various monitoring systems are not harmonized or widely documented, with the presence of efficient and successful programmes r

Vitamin D Status in Spanish Elite Team Sport Players.

Low vitamin D is usual; however, data are limited for elite team players. The aim was to investigate the vitamin D levels in Football Club Barcelona (FCB) first division players of six sport modalities. Ninety-five elite male players (27.3 ± 4.6 y) belonging to FCB provided data for vitamin D throughout a season. In this study, 25(OH)D was measured in serum by chemiluminescent immunoassay. Outdoor/indoor training and supplementation were also considered. Total mean 25(OH)D concentrations were 91.9 ± 23.1 nmol/L in all players, with higher mean levels among supplemented players (94.7 ± 24.3 nmo

Effect of External Counterpulsation on Exercise Recovery in Team Sport Athletes.

External counterpulsation (ECP), an electrocardiogram-led sequential compression of lower limbs, has been recently proposed for sports recovery, but research is scant. This study examined the effects of an ECP session upon neuromuscular function (vertical jump and torque/velocity characteristics), biochemical responses (creatine kinase, cortisol, testosterone, alpha-amylase and immunoglobulin-A), and muscle soreness (visual analogue scale) following high-intensity exercise. Twenty-one male team sport athletes (age: 21.6±3.4 yrs; height: 182.7±7.3 cm; body mass: 82.7±9.3 kg) recovered from the

Initial validation of SENIC: a cognitive test for assessing concussion in team sports.

INTRODUCTION: Concussions present a significant public health concern, with an estimated 1.6 to 3 million sport-related cases reported annually in the United States alone. Athletes are particularly vulnerable due to repeated exposure to high-risk situations. We wish to validate a novel assessment tool designed to evaluate cognitive functioning through a sport-specific, decision-based task. METHOD: This study introduces SENIC (ENgaging and Immersive Cognitive Simulation), a dynamic, context-sensitive cognition task developed collaboratively with athletes and stakeholders. SENIC integrates ecol

Acute:chronic workload ratio and load management for team sports: a multilevel meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The acute:chronic workload ratio (ACWR) has been widely used to monitor training load and injury risk in team-sport athletes. However, its practical utility remains debated because of methodological heterogeneity across load metrics, calculation methods, time-window definitions, sport types, and injury definitions. This systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis aimed to quantify the association between ACWR and injury risk in team-sport athletes and to examine potential moderators. METHODS: Four electronic databases were searched from inception through October 2024. Prospectiv

A Longitudinal Examination of Young People's Gambling Behaviours and Participation in Team Sports.

This paper develops and expands upon social identity theory as an explanation for gambling among youth engaged in team sport. Analysing longitudinal data for over 4500 20-year-olds from the Growing Up in Ireland study, reveals that online gambling increased from 2.6 to 9.3% between 17 and 20 years in the cohort, with the increase driven by males. A statistically significant positive association is uncovered between playing team sports and regularly gambling, as well as online gambling behaviour, independent of socio-demographic and other risk factors for males but not for females. The findings

Predictors of lower extremity injuries in team sports (PROFITS-study): a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Several intrinsic risk factors for lower extremity injuries have been proposed, including lack of proper knee and body control during landings and cutting manoeuvres, low muscular strength, reduced balance and increased ligament laxity, but there are still many unanswered questions. The overall aim of this research project is to investigate anatomical, biomechanical, neuromuscular, genetic and demographic risk factors for traumatic non-contact lower extremity injuries in young team sport athletes. Furthermore, the research project aims to develop clinically oriented screening too

The "noble" sports fan: the relationships between team identification, self-esteem, and aggression.

Authors have disagreed on whether sports spectating has positive or negative consequences for individuals and society. Based on Smith's 1988 discussion of "the noble sports fan," the current research tested the prediction that identification with a sports team would be positively related to collective or group's self-esteem and not related to trait scores of aggression. The hypothesis was confirmed. Discussion centers on patterns of the observed correlations.
