Safety Assessment, Toxicological Concerns, and Regulatory Frameworks Governing Herbal and Fruit Teas: A Mini Review.

While herbal and fruit teas are widely perceived as safe, natural alternatives to caffeinated beverages, emerging research underscores the need for careful evaluation of their safety, toxicity, and regulatory oversight. Unlike conventional teas derived from Camellia sinensis, many herbal and fruit infusions are not subject to uniform global standards, raising concerns regarding quality control, dosage, contamination, and possible drug/herb interactions. Addressing these gaps requires coordinated research efforts that emphasize standardization of phytochemical composition, large-scale clinical

Multi-Metric Evaluation of a Green HPLC-PDA Method for Sibutramine Quantification in Herbal Teas.

Sibutramine (SBT) is a synthetic anorectic agent formerly prescribed for obesity but withdrawn due to cardiovascular risks. Its illicit addition to herbal weight-loss products remains a major health concern. This study reports the development and validation of a green, rapid, and sensitive HPLC-PDA method for SBT quantification in herbal teas. Separation was performed on a C18 reversed-phase column (150 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) using ethanol:water (35:65, v/v) acidified to pH 3.0 with orthophosphoric acid, under isocratic conditions (2.0 mL/min, 40°C, 10-min runtime). A matrix-matched calibration strat

Effect of Mongolian Herbal Tea on Growth of Candida albicans.

Candida albicans, one of the main pathogens in the oral cavity, is involved in the development of oral candidiasis. Various components of tea, and especially polyphenols, are believed to be effective against the growth of yeast or bacteria. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of polyphenols in Mongolian herbal tea on growth of C. albicans. Tea extract was prepared from Mongolian herbal tea and diluted with distilled water (DW) at concentrations of 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50%. Distilled water was used as the control. Acidification of the medium was determined by measuring its pH;

East meets West: an herbal tea finds a receptor.

Jaundice, which is caused by accumulation of bilirubin, is extremely common in newborn infants. Phototherapy is an effective treatment, but a drug therapy would also be desirable. A Chinese herbal remedy for jaundice called Yin Zhi Huang is now shown to activate a liver receptor that enhances the clearance of bilirubin (see the related article beginning on page 137). This discovery could lead to improved pharmaceutical treatments for neonatal jaundice.

Pesticide residues in common and herbal teas combined with risk assessment and transfer to the infusion.

The use of pesticides is permitted in tea cultivation, but many of them are withdrawn in Europe. The aim of this study was a comprehensive assessment of pesticide occurrence in common teas (black, green, red, white, and black flavored) and herbal teas (lemon balm and mint) and their transfer to the infusion. Among 603 pesticides, 24 were detected, of which 9 were withdrawn in Europe. Of the 64 tea samples, 47% had pesticide residues and 2% exceeded the European Maximum Residue Level (EU MRL; 572% for linuron/mint). The highest mean concentrations of the most common pesticides were 336 ng g-1 (

Herbal Tea for the Management of Pharyngitis: Inhibition of Streptococcus pyogenes Growth and Biofilm Formation by Herbal Infusions.

Herbal teas are becoming popular as functional beverages due to their various health promotional properties. This study aimed at assessing 13 hot water infusions (HWIs) from different herbs against streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat). Licorice root exhibited the lowest minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 1.56 mg/mL, followed by barberry root, thyme, and oregano flowering shoots, with a MIC of 3.13 mg/mL. At their respective minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC), licorice showed the bactericidal effect on S. pyogenes within 12 h after exposure while others need 24 h for a simila

A Case of Hypokalemia Caused by the Consumption of Licorice-Containing Herbal Tea.

Hypokalemia can have many etiologies, of which licorice toxicity is notable but often overlooked. Licorice is being increasingly used as a component in herbal formulations and holistic remedies. We present a case of licorice-induced hypokalemia due to herbal tea formulation in a patient with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metastatic adenocarcinoma. This case highlights a unique presentation of pseudo-hyperaldosteronism due to licorice consumption with concurrent use of a sodium-glucose cotransporter (SGLT2) inhibitor, requiring a high index of suspicion for diagnosis. Glycyrrhetinic

Acute hepatitis in a patient using a Chinese herbal tea--a case report.

A case is presented of reversible acute hepatitis in a patient using a Chinese herbal tea. Upon identification of the tea mixture Aristolochia species, including A. debilis, which contains the highly toxic aristolochic acid, could be identified. We conclude that the acute hepatitis as described in this patient is most likely to be caused by (one of) the active ingredients of the Chinese herbal tea. Furthermore, this case illustrates that so-called natural products can cause unexpected severe adverse reactions.

The Neuroprotective Effect of Rooibos Herbal Tea Against Alzheimer's Disease: A Review.

The world is experiencing a demographic shift toward an increasing proportion of elderly persons. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurological disorders are far more likely to develop as people age. AD is a gradual, irreversible, and degenerative brain disorder that progressively deteriorates memory and cognitive function, eventually leading to death. Treatment for AD is the most significant unmet clinical need in neurology. There are no effective treatment options to prevent or reverse the degenerative process. The current medical management focuses primarily on temporarily easing symptoms
