Retinal projections in two crocodilian species, Caiman crocodilus and Crocodylus niloticus.

The retinal projections of Caiman crocodilus and Crocodylus niloticus were investigated by means of the orthograde axonal transport of either rhodamine beta-isothiocyanate or tritiated proline. In these two species, each tracer revealed contralateral retinal projections to three hypothalamic regions (subventricular gray matter, nucleus suprachiasmaticus, and area optica hypothalami lateralis), five thalamic regions (nuclei ovalis, dorsolateralis anterior, ventrolateralis and ventrobasalis, and lateral geniculate complex, of which six subcomponents can be distinguished), six pretectal regions (

Distribution of serotonin in the brain stem and spinal cord of the lizard Varanus exanthematicus: an immunohistochemical study.

The distribution of serotonin-containing nerve cell bodies, fibers and terminals in the lizard Varanus exanthematicus was studied with the indirect immunofluorescence technique, using antibodies to serotonin. Most of the serotonin-containing cell bodies were found in the midline, in both of the raphe nuclei, i.e. the nuclei raphes superior and inferior. A considerable number of more laterally shifted serotonergic neurons was found particularly at three levels of the brain stem, viz. in the caudal mesencephalic tegmentum, at the isthmic level, and over a long distance in the medulla oblongata.

NADPH-diaphorase-positive neurons and pathways in the brain of the frog Rana esculenta.

We described the NADPH-diaphorase-containing neurons and fibres in the brain of the frog Rana esculenta. In the telencephalon stained cells occurred in the olfactory bulb, all subdivisions of the pallium, the diagonal band, the medial septum and the striatum. The olfactory glomeruli showed the most intense enzyme reaction. The neuropil of the accessory olfactory bulb was also heavily stained and this staining extended to the rostral diencephalon through the ventral lateral pallium. Fibre staining was less intense in the medial pallium and the medial septum. In the diencephalon, NADPH-diaphoras

The cells of origin of the incertofugal projections to the tectum, thalamus, tegmentum and spinal cord in the rat: a study using the autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase methods.

Efferent projections of the zona incerta were examined in the rat using the autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase methods, with special reference to the cytoarchitectonic structure of the zona incerta. Autoradiographic experiments showed that the incertofugal fiber systems reach ipsilaterally to the thalamus (lateral dorsal, central lateral, ventral lateral geniculate, parafascicular, subparafascicular and reuniens nuclei, and posterior nuclear complex), to the hypothalamus (dorsal, lateral and posterior hypothalamic areas), to the tectum (medial pretectal area, deep pretectal and pretec

Tecto-cerebellar dysraphia with occipital encephalocele.

We report four cases with the rare syndrome of tecto-cerebellar dysraphia with occipital encephalocele. The clinical features seen in these patients included episodic tachypnea and irregular breathing, opsoclonus, ataxia, marked hypotonia of the limbs, coloboma, and polydactyly. All four patients had midline occipital encephalocele. The cranial computed tomography scan showed partial to total agenesis of the vermis with a large communication between cisterna magna and the fourth ventricle. The computed tomography scan also showed partial deficiency of the midbrain tectum. We discuss the clinic

[The primary optical projection in albino and pigmented rats].

1. We have studied by silver degeneration methods in transversal and horizontal brain series the pathways and the terminal nuclei of the primary optic system in albino and pigmented rats. 2. About 90% of the retinal axons are crossing in the Chiasma opticum. Differences between albino and pigmented rats are small. At the level of the lateral geniculate body (l.g.b.) the axons ramify. One branch is going in the optic tract or in the transversalsystem to the pretectum and tectum. The other branch goes as a collateral in the longitudinal system of the dorsal l.g.b. and ends here. 3. The optic fib

Demonstration of Microsurgical Technique and Nuances for the Resection of a Midbrain Tectal Glioma via the Transcollicular Approach: 3-Dimensional Operative Video.

Tectal gliomas are a rare subset of intrinsic brainstem lesions. The microsurgical resection of these lesions remains a major challenge.1,2 Transcollicular approaches on one side, via the superior or inferior colliculi or both, are neurologically well tolerated without obvious or major auditory or oculomotor consequences. However, any postoperative acute visually triggered saccadic abnormalities caused by iatrogenic superior colliculus damage generally resolve during the postoperative period, as other oculomotor structures compensate for these functions in unilateral lesions.  In this surgical

Tectal pineal cyst in a 1-year-old girl.

Glial cysts of the pineal gland can frequently be found in adults and children, but only rarely do they enlarge to become clinically relevant. We report a unique presentation of a pineal cyst in the midbrain tectum of a 16-month-old girl who initially presented with ptosis and strabismus. Preoperative imaging studies and intraoperative findings revealed no continuity between the tectal cyst and the pineal gland proper. We surmise that this tectal pineal cyst may have arisen from duplicated pineal gland tissue.

Combinatorial expression of cadherins in the tectum and the sorting of neurites in the tectofugal pathways of the chicken embryo.

The expression of four cadherins (N-cadherin, R-cadherin, cadherin-6B and cadherin-7) was mapped in the developing tectal system of the chicken embryo from four to 19 days of incubation. Each of the cadherins is expressed in a restricted fashion in specific tectal layers, with partial overlap between the cadherins. In some layers, subpopulations of neurons differentially express the cadherins, e.g., in the stratum griseum centrale. Double labeling demonstrates that many of the projection neurons in this layer co-express at least two cadherins. Fibers of the efferent (tectofugal) pathways origi

Surgical removal of metastatic renal adenocarcinoma to the midbrain tectum: a case report.

A patient with adenocarcinoma of the kidney metastatic to the quadrigeminal plate of the midbrain presented with acute obstructive hydrocephalus and early tonsillar herniation. Because the majority of these carcinomas are resistant to radiation therapy, only limited treatment choices were available. Initially, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt relieved the hydrocephalus and neurologic symptoms. After a short course of improvement, with decompressed ventricles demonstrated by postoperative computed tomography, the patient developed additional neurologic signs, leading to the decision to excise the m

Pediatric tectal glioma presented with acute hydrocephalus and ventriculomegaly. Two case reports.

Tectal gliomas represent a subset of low-grade tumors that arise in the tectal region at the roof of the brainstem. Symptoms of tectal glioma include those caused by increased intracranial pressure due to obstructive hydrocephalus. Headache, blurred vision, double vision, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms. In the treatment, ETV (endoscopic third ventriculostomy) or VP-shunt (ventriculoperitoneal) can be applied to treat hydrocephalus. Tectal gliomas are usually diagnosed in childhood and often occur in adults. They are often benign, slowly progressing lesions; outpatient clinical and rad

Prion protein (PrP) deposits in the tectum of experimental Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease following intraocular inoculation.

The abnormal misfolded isoform of prion protein (PrPd; "d" for disease) is considered as a surrogate marker for infectivity in the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). In this experiment, we used intraocular inoculation to study PrPd deposition in the visual system of the brain of mice infected with the Fujisaki (K.Fu) strain of Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker (GSS) disease. We report here that PrPd is deposited in the superior colliculus following contralateral intraocular inoculation and thus follows neuronal connection

Successful treatment of tremor by endoscopic third ventriculostomy in an adolescent with obstructive hydrocephalus due to tectal glioma: case report.

Hydrocephalus presenting with movement disorder is very rare, especially in children. We present the case of a 16-year-old boy who presented with bilateral intention tremor and slowed speech as a result of obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to a tectal glioma. Treatment with endoscopic third ventriculostomy improved his symptoms. We review the literature regarding this unusual presentation of an otherwise common condition.

Pediatric midbrain tectal glioneuronal tumor with intratumoral hemorrhage: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Glioneuronal tumors (GNTs) are benign mixed brain tumors composed of differentiated glial and neuronal cells. We report the first case of intratumoral hemorrhage in pediatric tectal glioneuronal tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 5-year-old boy who presented with intermittent headaches and vomiting. Imaging studies revealed a tectal tumor with ventricular dilatations due to aqueductal stenosis. The patient underwent endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and tumor biopsy, which revealed a pathological diagnosis of GNT. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the pat

Circadian rhythm in the visual system of the lizard Anolis carolinensis.

The electroretinogram (ERG) was recorded from free-moving Anolis lizards once per hour for 5 days. As in our previous work, the b-wave, but not the a-wave, showed a reliable circadian rhythm (CR) in amplitude, with an acrophase near projected noon. Both the a- and b-waves showed a CR in peak time (implicit time, or IT), with the a-wave IT being longest near midnight, and the b-wave IT at midday. Acrophases were shifted when animals were housed on a phase-shifted light-dark cycle. The ERG CR was unaffected by removal of the parietal organ, but it was virtually abolished by removal of the pineal

Comparative anatomy of dissected optic lobes, optic ventricles, midbrain tectum, collicular ventricles, and aqueduct: evolutionary modifications as potential explanation for non-tumoral aqueductal anomalies in humans.

PURPOSE: An extensive literature has postulated multiple etiologies for aqueductal stenosis. No publications were found, discussing that evolutionary modifications might explain aqueductal anomalies. This study's objectives were to review the evolutionary modifications of vertebrates' tectum structures that might explain human aqueduct anomalies. Undertaking vertebrate comparative study is currently not feasible in view of limitations in obtaining vertebrate material. Thus, vertebrate material collected, injected, dissected, and radiographed in the early 1970s was analyzed, focusing on the aqu
