The laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT) is a brainstem nucleus that sends cholinergic, glutamatergic, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic projections to the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a key brain region associated with reward information processing and reinforcement learning, and thus, with addiction induced by drugs of abuse, including cocaine. Recent studies have revealed that the LDT, in addition to the VTA, plays important roles in the development and expression of cocaine-induced addiction and stress-induced enhancement of addictive behaviors. Additionally, neuroplasticity induce

A 72-year-old woman presented a sudden onset isolated sensory deficit of medial lemniscal type in the right half of the body. MRI showed a small lacune in the left paramedian pontine tegmentum corresponding to the location of the medial lemniscus. MRI appeared to be most valuable in the topographic delineation of lacunar infarctions which were responsible for pure sensory stroke.

Efferent projections of the zona incerta were examined in the rat using the autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase methods, with special reference to the cytoarchitectonic structure of the zona incerta. Autoradiographic experiments showed that the incertofugal fiber systems reach ipsilaterally to the thalamus (lateral dorsal, central lateral, ventral lateral geniculate, parafascicular, subparafascicular and reuniens nuclei, and posterior nuclear complex), to the hypothalamus (dorsal, lateral and posterior hypothalamic areas), to the tectum (medial pretectal area, deep pretectal and pretec

1. We have studied by silver degeneration methods in transversal and horizontal brain series the pathways and the terminal nuclei of the primary optic system in albino and pigmented rats. 2. About 90% of the retinal axons are crossing in the Chiasma opticum. Differences between albino and pigmented rats are small. At the level of the lateral geniculate body (l.g.b.) the axons ramify. One branch is going in the optic tract or in the transversalsystem to the pretectum and tectum. The other branch goes as a collateral in the longitudinal system of the dorsal l.g.b. and ends here. 3. The optic fib

PURPOSE: Pattern strabismus is characterized by a horizontal misalignment of the eyes that varies with vertical eye position. This disorder has traditionally been described, and treated, as overaction or underaction of the oblique muscles. In recent years, evidence has accumulated that indicate that the disorder is associated with abnormal cross-talk between brainstem pathways that contribute to the horizontal and vertical components of eye movements. The present study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that the key abnormalities are at the level of, or downstream from, the interstitia

Uncertainties concerning anatomy and function of cortico-subcortical projections have arisen during the recent years. A clear distinction between cortico-subthalamic (hyperdirect) and cortico-tegmental projections (superolateral medial forebrain bundle, slMFB) so far is elusive. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the slMFB (for major depression, MD and obsessive compulsive disorders, OCD) has on the one hand been interpreted as actually involving limbic (prefrontal) hyperdirect pathways. On the other hand slMFB's stimulation region in the mesencephalic ventral tegmentum is said to impact on other

Möbius syndrome undoubtedly results from a variety of disorders affecting central or peripheral portions of appropriate cranial nerves or their target muscles. Pathological alterations observed in cranial nuclei are most often viewed as aplastic or dysplastic lesions. Two patients with Möbius syndrome with associated facial and skeletal malformations showed mineralized necrotic foci in multiple brain stem nuclei. Prenatal encephalomalacic lesions represent the pathological basis for some cases of congenital static Möbius syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Basilar artery occlusion can cause locked-in syndrome, which is characterized by quadriplegia, anarthria, and limited communication via eye movements. Here, we describe an uncommon stroke syndrome associated with endovascular recanalization of the top of the basilar artery: "reverse locked-in syndrome."
METHODS: We report the case of a patient with atypical neurological deficits caused by acute ischemic stroke of the midbrain tegmentum. We perform neuroanatomic localization of the patient's infarcts by mapping the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data onto a brainstem atlas.

Cholinergic neurons of the pedunculopontine nucleus (Ch5) and laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (Ch6) monosynaptically activate dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra, zona compacta (A9), and ventral tegmental area (A10) via muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. Ch5 cells and Ch6 cells are inhibited by local injections of muscarinic agonists, suggesting the presence of autoreceptors. This review advances the hypothesis that the psychotogenic effects of antimuscarinics are triggered by disinhibition of Ch5 and Ch6 cells via their autoreceptors, and that these effects are distinct from the memory-b

Two cases of brainstem infarction involving a unilateral side of the midbrain tegmentum showed a peculiar ocular symptom complex. The ocular syndrome consisted of (1) oculomotor palsy ipsilateral to the lesion, (2) monocular eyelid retraction and upward gaze palsy contralateral to the lesion, and (3) conjugate downward gaze and convergence palsy. By computed tomography and cerebral angiography, the lesion shared by the two cases was identified in the territory of median mesencephalic rami originating from the posterior cerebral artery. The lesion involved oculomotor nucleus on a side. Contrala

In 18 autopsies from patients with primary pontine hemorrhage we studied the sites of bleeding, the volumes and development of hematomas and clinicopathological correlations. A modular optical electronic planimeter was introduced to measure the size of hematomas. The series of patients can be divided into 2 groups from the viewpoint of bleeding sites, their development and clinical symptomatology. These are 1) the tegmentobasilar type and 2) the tegmental type. The precise location of the origin of hemorrhage, and the approximate volume of hematomas can now be determined with the help of compu

We report 2 cases of Gasperini syndrome and consider them with the 11 previously reported cases to describe the clinical characteristics of this rare syndrome: Core neurological signs are peripheral facial nerve palsy and abducens nerve palsy of the affected side: Among all cases, imaging demonstrated a small lesion in the mediolateral tegmental pons (10/13 cases of microinfarction; 2/13 cases of microbleeding). We found that the responsible artery in ischemic Gasperini syndrome is mainly the long circumferential branch of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery; Case 1 is the first case thoug

This study examines the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) and its afferent and efferent connections. In Nissl-stained material, DNLL has three parts: dorsal, ventral, and lateral. Although each part contains neurons with similar Nissl patterns, the subdivisions may be distinguished by the size, shape, and orientation of the cells. The lateral DNLL contains a mixture of DNLL neurons and cells from the sagulum. Afferent connections to DNLL were investigated with anterograde axonal transport techniques. Bilateral inputs to DNLL arise from the anteroventral cochlear nucleus and latera

Two groups of each 6 male hooded rats with bilateral symmetrical lesions in the anterior dorsolateral tegmentum including parts of the anterior and posterior pretectal nuclei and two sham-operated control groups were compared in different avoidance paradigms. The acquisition of conditioned avoidance responses (CAR) in a Y-maze was significantly retarded in lesioned rats and remained definitely on a lower performance level. Their reaction times (RTs) were significantly prolonged. Brightness discrimination was severely impaired. They had evidently troubles to correct their erroneous runs. After

An organism's sense of direction depends on vestibular input to thalamic and forebrain structures. The supragenual nucleus (SGN) sits at a prime location in the network to convey vestibular signals forward to update the representation of head direction (HD) with ongoing head movement. The SGN receives anatomical projections from the medial vestibular nuclei and nucleus prepositus hypoglossi and prior reports have suggested that the SGN sends projections to both the dorsal tegmental nucleus (DTN) and lateral mammillary nucleus (LMN), two midbrain nuclei crucial in generating a representation of

BACKGROUND: Supranuclear vertical gaze palsies and slowed vertical saccades are characteristic clinic features of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). The "hummingbird sign," reflective of midbrain atrophy, is a classic radiographic sign of PSP. Correlation between eye movement abnormalities and radiographic findings in PSP has been reported previously. However, due to the use of clinical criteria not commonly employed in neuro-ophthalmic practice and neuroimaging techniques that are not widely available, it remains unclear whether correlation between midbrain structure and characteristic ocu
