Auditory topography and temporal response dynamics of canary caudal telencephalon.

To map the encoding of auditory cues in songbirds, multiunit electrophysiological responses to pure tone stimuli (250-5000 Hz) were recorded at 373 sites throughout the avian analogue of the mammalian auditory cortex in the caudal telencephalon of awake, restrained canaries. We found that a dorso-ventral tonotopic gradient from low to high frequency stimuli extends from the rostral field L2 to caudal-most caudo-medial nidopallium (NCM), similar to the frequency-dependent patterns of ZENK gene expression in canary NCM and to electrophysiological responses in other songbird species. However, res

Systemic prenatal insults disrupt telencephalon development: implications for potential interventions.

Infants born prematurely are prone to chronic neurologic deficits including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, cognitive delay, behavioral problems, and neurosensory impairments. In affected children, imaging and neuropathological findings demonstrate significant damage to white matter. The extent of cortical damage has been less obvious. Advances in the understanding of telencephalon development provide insights into how systemic intrauterine insults affect the developing white matter, subplate, and cortex, and lead to multiple neurologic impairments. In addition to white matter oligodendrocytes and a

Revised nomenclature for avian telencephalon and some related brainstem nuclei.

The standard nomenclature that has been used for many telencephalic and related brainstem structures in birds is based on flawed assumptions of homology to mammals. In particular, the outdated terminology implies that most of the avian telencephalon is a hypertrophied basal ganglia, when it is now clear that most of the avian telencephalon is neurochemically, hodologically, and functionally comparable to the mammalian neocortex, claustrum, and pallial amygdala (all of which derive from the pallial sector of the developing telencephalon). Recognizing that this promotes misunderstanding of the f

Vocal circuitry in Xenopus laevis: telencephalon to laryngeal motor neurons.

Sexually differentiated calling patterns of Xenopus laevis are conveyed to the vocal organ by a dedicated neuromuscular system. Here, we define afferents to vocal motor neurons and determine whether the connectivity of the vocal pathway is sexually differentiated. The use of fluorescent dextran amines and the isolated brain preparation readily permitted identification of anterograde and retrograde connectivity patterns. The whole-mount preparation allowed us to observe projections in their entirety, including cells of origin of a projection (for retrograde projections), terminal fields (for an

Anatomical Description of the Main Gyri and Sulci of the Telencephalon of Alouatta belzebul.

The Alouatta belzebul is a species of howler monkey, of the Atelidae family and genus Alouatta. It is endemic in Brazil and has a separate geographic distribution, with two populations occurring: in the Amazon and in the Atlantic Forest on the coast of Northeast Brazil. The species is classified as 'vulnerable', and this is mainly justified by hunting, fragmentation and loss of habitat in tropical forests. Regarding the anatomy of this species, information is scarce and in some aspects such as the brain are non-existent. The objective of this study is to describe the macroscopy of the main gro

Vimentin in ependymal and subventricular proliferative zone cells of rat telencephalon.

Ependymal cells of cerebral ventricles are the most probable candidate progenitor cells. We studied ependymal and subventricular zone cells expressing intermediate filament protein vimentin. The results suggest that the ventricular ependyma represent a homogenous cell population. Some ependymocytes have long processes contacting with blood vessels, which makes them similar to tanycytes of the third cerebral ventricle. New data on the structure of ependymocyte processes attest to their active involvement into creation of a special microenvironment for neural stem cells of the subventricular pro

Olfactory and nonolfactory projections in the river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) telencephalon.

The projections of the olfactory bulb, the primordial dorsal, piriform and hippocampal pallia, and of the dorsal thalamus were studied in the lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and HRP coupled to the wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP). There was obtained an experimental morphological evidence of the presence of the direct thalamo-telencephalic projections in this vertebrate species. The anterior and posterior parts of the dorsal thalamic nucleus, the nucleus of Bellonci, the primordial geniculate bodies, the rostral part of the midbrain were identified as the sources

Enkephalin-like immunoreactivity within the telencephalon of the reptile Caiman crocodilus.

Immunohistochemical methods were used to characterize the distribution of staining for leucine enkephalin-like and methionine enkephalin-like immunoreactivities in the telencephalon of Caiman crocodilus. Very similar distributions of both leucine enkephalin-like and methionine enkephalin-like immunoreactivity were observed. The greatest accumulations of enkephalin-like immunoreactive material were observed within the ventrolateral area of the telencephalon, a region considered comparable to the mammalian corpus striatum and avian paleostriatal complex (i.e. basal ganglia) on the basis of embry

Autoradiographic localization of opiate receptors in rat brain. III. The telencephalon.

Opiate receptor distribution, determined by the autoradiographic localization of stereospecific [3H]diprenorphine binding sites, was examined in the telencephalon. Areas showing very dense or dense localization of receptors included parts of the presubiculum and amygdala, patchy areas in the caudate-putamen and accumbens, the subfornical organ, the interstriatal nucleus of the striae terminalis and the anterior olfactory nucleus, pars externa. Lower densities were found in other parts of the hippocampal formation, the deeper part of the cerebral cortex, the entopeduncular nucleus, globus palli

A Transcriptomic Dataset of Embryonic Murine Telencephalon of Fmr1-Deficient Mice.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene. FXS patients exhibit autistic behaviors and abnormal brain structures, with notable sex differences. However, the mechanisms by which Fmr1 deficiency leads to these sex differences during brain development remain unclear. In this study, we performed bulk RNA sequencing on telencephalon samples of Fmr1-knockout mice of both sexes at embryonic day (E) 14.5, i.e., at the peak of neurogenesis. Clustering analysis revealed gene expression differences influenced b

The location of projection neurons to the biceps brachii muscle in the telencephalon of the pigeon.

Few studies regarding the anatomical distribution of motor neurons innervating muscles of the arm have been demonstrated in avian brains. The purpose of this study was to finely determine the localization of cerebral neurons innervating the biceps brachii muscle in the pigeon. The cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) was employed as a retrograde tracer to determine the location of neurons controlling the biceps brachii muscle in the telencephalon following intramuscular injection in male pigeons (n = 7), which were killed 14 days after intramuscular injection with CTB. We found that CTB-labelled neur

Early olfactory fiber projections and cell migration into the rat telencephalon.

The formation and development of primary olfactory axons was studied in the rat embryo using acetylcholinesterase histochemistry, immunocytochemistry for neuron-specific beta-tubulin (TuJ1) and growth associated protein 43 (GAP43), and a fluorescent tracer DiI. Olfactory axons extend from the olfactory receptor neurons localized in the olfactory epithelium. These fibers grow to reach and enter the olfactory bulbs, where they form the first relay and integrative synaptic station in the olfactory system: the olfactory glomerulus. In this communication we address the development of primary olfact

Sonic hedgehog maintains the identity of cortical interneuron progenitors in the ventral telencephalon.

Fate determination in the mammalian forebrain, where mature phenotypes are often not achieved until postnatal stages of development, has been an elusive topic of study despite its relevance to neuropsychiatric disease. In the ventral telencephalon, major subgroups of cerebral cortical interneurons originate in the medial ganglionic eminence (MGE), where the signaling molecule sonic hedgehog (Shh) continues to be expressed during the period of neuronogenesis. To examine whether Shh regulates cortical interneuron specification, we studied mice harboring conditional mutations in Shh within the ne

Misrouting of mitral cell progenitors in the Pax6/small eye rat telencephalon.

The olfactory bulb is a protruding structure formed at the rostral end of the telencephalon. Pax6-mutant mice and rats lack the olfactory bulb and, instead, develop an olfactory bulb-like structure at the lateral part of the telencephalon. Here, we report that ectopic formation of the olfactory bulb-like structure in these mutants is caused by the abnormal migration of mitral cell progenitors, which first differentiate within the olfactory bulb. Cell-tracing experiments in whole embryos in culture indicate that, in the mutants, the mitral cell progenitors that originate from the rostral part o

Somatosensory areas in the telencephalon of the pigeon. II. Spinal pathways and afferent connections.

There are two somatosensory areas in the telencephalon of the pigeon which receive an input from the spinal somatosensory system: one in the rostral Wulst which consists of the three hyperstriatal layers (h. accessorium (HA), h. intercalatus superior (HIS) and h. dorsale (HD] and one in the caudal telencephalon (neostriatum caudale (NC), neostriatum intermedium (NI) and hyperstriatum ventrale (HV]. Recordings of evoked single unit or multi unit activity and of field potentials before and after lesions of spinal pathways at a high cervical level (C4) were made to determine the contribution of t

Distinct requirements for Tcf3 and Tcf12 during oligodendrocyte development in the mouse telencephalon.

BACKGROUND: E-proteins encoded by Tcf3, Tcf4, and Tcf12 are class I basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors (TFs) that are thought to be widely expressed during development. However, their function in the developing brain, specifically in the telencephalon remains an active area of research. Our study examines for the first time if combined loss of two E-proteins (Tcf3 and Tcf12) influence distinct cell fates and oligodendrocyte development in the mouse telencephalon. METHODS: We generated Tcf3/12 double conditional knockouts (dcKOs) using Olig2Cre/+ or Olig1Cre/+ to overcome comp

Neurosensory development of the four brainstem-projecting sensory systems and their integration in the telencephalon.

Somatosensory, taste, vestibular, and auditory information is first processed in the brainstem. From the brainstem, the respective information is relayed to specific regions within the cortex, where these inputs are further processed and integrated with other sensory systems to provide a comprehensive sensory experience. We provide the organization, genetics, and various neuronal connections of four sensory systems: trigeminal, taste, vestibular, and auditory systems. The development of trigeminal fibers is comparable to many sensory systems, for they project mostly contralaterally from the br

Common and Distinct Features of Adult Neurogenesis and Regeneration in the Telencephalon of Zebrafish and Mammals.

In contrast to mammals, the adult zebrafish brain shows neurogenic activity in a multitude of niches present in almost all brain subdivisions. Irrespectively, constitutive neurogenesis in the adult zebrafish and mouse telencephalon share many similarities at the cellular and molecular level. However, upon injury during tissue repair, the situation is entirely different. In zebrafish, inflammation caused by traumatic brain injury or by induced neurodegeneration initiates specific and distinct neurogenic programs that, in combination with signaling pathways implicated in constitutive neurogenesi
