Esophageal Heat Transfer for Patient Temperature Control and Targeted Temperature Management.

Controlling patient temperature is important for a wide variety of clinical conditions. Cooling to normal or below normal body temperature is often performed for neuroprotection after ischemic insult (e.g. hemorrhagic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cardiac arrest, or other hypoxic injury). Cooling from febrile states treats fever and reduces the negative effects of hyperthermia on injured neurons. Patients are warmed in the operating room to prevent inadvertent perioperative hypothermia, which is known to cause increased blood loss, wound infections, and myocardial injury, while also prolong

Temperature transition of human hemoglobin at body temperature: effects of calcium.

We studied the effects of calcium ion concentration on the temperature dependence of rheological behavior of human red blood cells (RBCs) and concentrated hemoglobin solutions. Our previous study (G. M. Artmann, C. Kelemen, D. Porst, G. Büldt, and S. Chien, 1998, Biophys. J., 75:3179-3183) showed a critical temperature (Tc) of 36.4 +/- 0.3 degrees C at which the RBCs underwent a transition from non-passage to passage through 1.3 microm micropipettes in response to an aspiration pressure of -2.3 kPa. An increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration by using the ionophore A23187 reduced the passa

Temperature sensitivity and temperature response across development in the Drosophila larva.

The surrounding thermal environment is highly important for the survival and fitness of animals, and as a result most exhibit behavioral and neural responses to temperature changes. We study signals generated by thermosensory neurons in Drosophila larvae and also the physical and sensory effects of temperature variation on locomotion and navigation. In particular we characterize how sensory neuronal and behavioral responses to temperature variation both change across the development of the larva. Looking at a wide range of non-nociceptive isotropic thermal environments, we characterize the dep

Bladder temperature as an estimate of body temperature during cardiopulmonary bypass.

Bladder temperature measured by a thermistor-tipped urinary catheter, was compared to oesophageal, nasopharyngeal, rectal and cutaneous temperatures in 33 patients during cardiopulmonary bypass. The bladder site was warmer than all other monitored sites in the pre-bypass period and showed least variation in temperature. The rate of change of bladder temperature during cooling and rewarming on bypass was significantly (p less than 0.01) lower than for oesophageal and nasopharyngeal temperatures, but was greater than or similar to the rate of change of rectal and cutaneous temperatures. This met

A comparison of the temperature difference according to the placement of a nasopharyngeal temperature probe.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare temperatures measured at three different sites where a nasopharyngeal temperature probe is commonly placed. METHODS: Eighty elective abdominal surgical patients were enrolled. After anesthesia induction, four temperature probes were placed at the nasal cavity, upper portion of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and the esophagus. The placement of the nasopharyngeal temperature probes was evaluated using a flexible nasendoscope, and the depth from the nares was measured. The four temperatures were simultaneously recorded at 10-minute intervals for

Effect of change in ambient temperature on core temperature during the daytime.

In this study, the hypothesis is tested that continuous increases in ambient temperature (Ta) during daytime would give elevated core and skin temperatures, and consequently better thermal sensation and comfort. Rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperatures and regional dry heat losses at 7 sites were continuously measured for 10 Japanese male subjects in three thermal conditions: cond. 1, stepwise increases in Ta from 26 °C at 9 h00 to 30 °C at 18 h00; cond. 2, steady Ta at 28 °C from 9 h00 to 18 h00 and cond. 3, stepwise decreases in Ta from 30 °C at 9 h00 to 26 °C at 18 h00. Rise in lens temperature on exposure to sunlight or high ambient temperature.

The effect of increase ambient temperature and sunlight on the temperatures of the rabbit lens and posterior chamber (PC) aqueous humour was measured by needle thermistor probes while the rectal temperature was monitored. Exposure of rabbits to sunlight (35 degrees-42 degrees C), in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, resulted in significant temperature increases in PC (4.3 degrees C), lens (3.2 degrees C), and rectum (2.3 degrees C). Returning animals to the shade resulted in a progressive decrease in the temperatures of the PC or lens in the tested eye, but repeating exposure to sunlight resulted i

Temperature compensation and temperature entrainment of the chick pineal cell circadian clock.

We have used an in vitro model system of the circadian clock, dispersed chick pineal cells, to examine the effects of temperature on the circadian clock of a homeotherm. This preparation enabled us to isolate a circadian clock from in vivo homeostatic temperature regulation and expose cells to both constant temperatures and abrupt temperature changes. By manipulating the temperature of the pineal cells, we have demonstrated that (1) the circadian clock compensates its period for temperature changes over the range of 34-40 degrees C; Q10 = 0.83, a value within the range of Q10 values measured f

Esophageal and tympanic temperature responses to core blood temperature changes during hyperthermia.

Esophageal, rectal, tympanic, and central blood temperature, i.e., pulmonary artery and aortic arch, were recorded in three patients during iatrogenic whole-body hyperthermia for the treatment of advanced malignant metastatic cancer. Aortic temperature closely followed changes in pulmonary arterial temperature, with an average delay time of 27 s. Esophageal temperature reflected quantitatively and more quickly (avg lag time, 80 s) the temperature changes in the pulmonary artery than tympanic membrane temperature. Tympanic temperature was consistently lower than the blood temperature of the hea

Infrared thermography measured body surface temperature and its relationship with rectal temperature in dairy cows under different temperature-humidity indexes.

The aim of this study was to better understand the inflection point of RT and BSTs and measure different body surface temperatures (BSTs) under different temperature-humidity index (THI) conditions. A total of 488 Holstein dairy cows were chosen to manually measure rectal temperature (RT) and BSTs including left side of eye, ear, cheek, forehead, flank, rump, fore udder, and rear udder by infrared thermography for 14 times. Those measurements included six times under high THI (THI > 78), three times under moderate THI (72 ≤ THI ≤ 78), and five times under low THI (THI < 72). Results showed tha

Maternal and developmental temperature modulate adult response to temperature in Drosophila melanogaster.

Beyond inherited genes and environmentally induced changes in gene expression, phenotypes can also be shaped by parental effects-an effect from a parental phenotype that causes modifications in offspring traits, which cannot be solely explained by the parental or offspring genomes. Such effects may prepare offspring for future environmental conditions and contribute to phenotypic plasticity, including responses to temperature. While temperature-induced plasticity has been extensively studied, the relative contributions of parental versus direct environmental cues remain poorly understood. The

Self-Intercalated CrxSy: 2D Ferrimagnetic Materials From Low-Temperature to Room-Temperature.

The advancement of spintronics relies on the development of 2D magnetic materials with robust room-temperature properties. However, challenges such as low Curie temperatures (TC) and ambient instability have hindered their practical applications. In this study, we employ chemical vapor deposition (CVD) combined with salt-assisted methods and optimize growth parameters to synthesize phase-tunable CrxSy compounds, including rhombohedral Cr2S3 (ferrimagnetic below 120 K), trigonal Cr5S6 (room-temperature ferrimagnetic), and hexagonal CrS (antiferromagnetic). Our findings reveal that self-intercal

Inverse Association of Skin Temperature With Ambulatory Blood Pressure and the Mediation of Skin Temperature in Blood Pressure Responses to Ambient Temperature.

BACKGROUND: The inverse association between ambient temperature and blood pressure (BP) has been investigated in the context of excess cardiovascular mortality in winter. However, the role of skin temperature (ST), which reflects our external and internal thermal environments, in BP regulation remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the association between ST and ambulatory BP and the mediation of ST in BP responses to ambient temperature in real-life settings. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal analysis using repeated measurements of ambulatory BP and ST for 48 hours (30 711 daytime readin

Temperature control in sepsis.

Fever can be viewed as an adaptive response to infection. Temperature control in sepsis is aimed at preventing potential harms associated with high temperature (tachycardia, vasodilation, electrolyte and water loss) and therapeutic hypothermia may be aimed at slowing metabolic activities and protecting organs from inflammation. Although high fever (>39.5°C) control is usually performed in critically ill patients, available cohorts and randomized controlled trials do not support its use to improve sepsis prognosis. Finally, both spontaneous and therapeutic hypothermia are associated with poor o
