Temporal muscle blood flow in chronic tension-type headache.

Temporal muscle blood flow was measured with the xenon 133 clearance technique in 40 patients with chronic tension-type headache and in 13 control subjects. Pressure-pain threshold in the temporal region was determined with an algometer. Patients and control subjects did not differ in any of the blood flow parameters. Resting blood flow at the two sides was highly correlated (Spearman coefficient, r = .61) and no right/left differences could be demonstrated. In both patients and control subjects, blood flow increased approximately fivefold during isometric work (1/3 of a maximum surface electr

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the temporal muscle: a case report.

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a pathological condition characterized by extraskeletal formation of bony tissue, induced by violent or repeated trauma. Reports of this pathology occurring in the region of the head and neck are rare, and even more so in the muscles of mastication. We present the case of patient with MOT of the temporal muscle, the etiology of which seems to be related to traumatic manipulations during dental treatment. A review of the literature is presented and the surgical approach, which resolved this case is discussed.

[Exteroceptive suppression of activity of the temporal muscle. Principles and applications].

The exteroceptive suppression period (ES) of the temporalis muscle activity is a trigemino-trigeminal brain stem reflex. It will be elicited most when stimulating trigeminal sensory afferents by painful stimuli and typically leads to a biphasic interruption of voluntary muscle activity. The first phase of decreased voluntary activity is called the early exteroceptive suppression period (ES1), the second, the late exteroceptive suppression period (ES2). Between these two suppression periods a phase of increased muscle activity, the so-called facilitation period (FP), can be seen. This phenomeno

Tension headache: botulinum toxin paralysis of temporal muscles.

The pathogenetic mechanism of tension headache (TH) is still unknown. The role of pericranial muscle tension in TH is also enigmatic. To evaluate this factor in chronic TH, pericranial muscles were paralysed in 6 chronic TH patients, using botulinum toxin. All patients fulfilled the IHS criteria of chronic TH associated with involvement of the pericranial muscles, but not the current criteria for cervicogenic headache. The patients were followed-up regularly with evaluation of the paralysis, changes in pain intensity, and pressure pain threshold measurements. We primarily only injected the tem

[The role of the temporal muscle in the temporomandibular joint. Surgical applications].

The temporal muscle is involved as a musculo-tendinous brake in working to block the dislocation. The reconstitution or the addition of this brake can be realised by the shortening of the horizontal fibres or by advancing the articular eminence realising an arthroplasty and an increase in the action of the temporal brake.

Association between the Thickness or Area of the Temporal Muscle and Skeletal Muscle Mass in Bioimpedance Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia associated with stroke can significantly impact patient prognosis; however, the current standard diagnostic methods for sarcopenia are rarely used in stroke patients. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate whether the temporal muscle thickness (TMT) or area (TMA) could serve as a surrogate marker for measuring skeletal muscle mass. METHODS: This retrospective chart review study was conducted on 244 participants from March 2018 to February 2020. The TMT and TMA were measured at the supraorbital roof level using brain CT or T1-weighted MR imaging obt

Correction of Temporal Hollowing Deformity Using Serratus Anterior Muscle Flap.

Temporal hollowing deformity (THD) is a contour irregularity in the frontotemporal region, which results in facial asymmetry in the frontal view. Here, we present our clinical experience of correction of THD using serratus anterior (SA) muscle and fascia free flaps. Between March 2016 and December 2018, 13 patients presenting with THD were treated with SA free flap. The mean age of the patients was 47.8 years. The patients received craniectomy due to subarachnoid hemorrhage, epidural hematoma, or brain tumor. On average, correction of THD was performed 17 months after cranioplasty. The SA flap

Mastoid obliteration with concha cartilage graft and temporal muscle fascia.

AIM: The aim of our study was to describe an effective technique for mastoid cavity obliteration in canal wall down tympanomastoidectomy for chronic otitis media and to review its efficacy in producing a dry, low-maintenance, small mastoid cavity. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective clinical study of 56 consecutive patients undergoing procedures for active chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma has been carried out. All surgical interventions involved partial mastoid obliteration and restoration of the middle ear space by use of cartilage reconstruction of the tympanic membrane. Ossicular r

Click evoked middle ear muscle reflex: Spectral and temporal aspects.

This study describes a time series-based method of middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) detection using bilateral clicks. Although many methods can detect changes in the otoacoustic emissions evoking stimulus to monitor the MEMR, they do not discriminate between true MEMR-mediated vs artifactual changes in the stimulus. We measured MEMR in 20 young clinically normal hearing individuals using 1-s-long click trains presented at six levels (65 to 95 dB peak-to-peak sound pressure level in 6 dB steps). Changes in the stimulus levels over the 1 s period were well-approximated by two-term exponential fun

Temporal and masseter muscle evaluation by MRI provides information on muscle mass and quality in acromegaly patients.

PURPOSE: The impact of GH/IGF-1 levels on skeletal muscle in acromegaly is still controversial. Temporal (TMT) and masseter muscle (MMT) thickness has been recently demonstrated as a reliable measure of muscle mass. We aimed to investigate the relationship between TMT, MMT and clinical/biochemical characteristics in patients with acromegaly. METHODS: Single center retrospective longitudinal study including 69 patients with at least one available brain/sella turcica MRI and matched clinical data. TMT, MMT, and muscle fatty infiltration (modified Goutallier score) were evaluated in all patients

Addressing Temporal Muscle Atrophy and Enhancing Cranioplasty Outcome: A Technical Note.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a critical surgical intervention for reducing elevated intracranial pressure. However, subsequent cranioplasty (CP) can be complicated by adhesions between anatomic layers, particularly the temporalis muscle (TM), dura mater, and brain surface. A dual-layer dural substitute during DC can help prevent these adhesions, improving CP outcomes. METHODS: In this three-year prospective multicenter study, 59 patients underwent DC followed by CP. A dual-layer dural substitute was placed between the TM and dura mater (and sometimes the subcut

Frailty in cerebellar ischemic stroke-The significance of temporal muscle thickness.

While comprising only 2% of all ischemic strokes, cerebellar strokes are responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality due to their subtle initial presentation and the morbidity of posterior fossa swelling. Furthermore, low temporal muscle thickness (TMT) has recently been identified as a prognostic imaging parameter to assess patient frailty and outcome. We analyzed radiological and clinical data sets of 282 patients with cerebellar ischemic stroke. Our analysis showed a significant association between low TMT, reduced NIHSS and mRS at discharge (p = 0.035, p = 0.004), and reduced mRS a

Subfascial dissection and extended temporal muscle detachment for middle fossa approach.

BACKGROUND: The soft tissue dissection for the middle fossa approach requires adequate management of the neuro, vascular, and muscular structures in order to maximize exposure and diminish morbidities. METHODS: An incision anterior to the tragus is performed, extending from the zygomatic process to the superior temporal line. The superior temporal artery is exposed, followed by a subfascial dissection of the frontalis nerve. The temporal muscle is dissected and released from the zygoma. All cranial landmarks are exposed for the 5 × 5 cm temporal fossa craniotomy. CONCLUSION: This novel appro

Traumatic myositis ossificans of the temporal muscle after dental local anesthesia.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Traumatic myositis ossificans of the temporal muscle can occur following local trauma. The diagnosis could be considered for patients presenting with therapy-resistant trismus after intraoral procedures. ABSTRACT: A female in her 30s developed ossification of the temporal muscle attachment after local trauma during dental treatment, resulting in an inability to open her mouth. Following surgical treatment and physical therapy acceptable mouth opening and masticatory function was achieved.

Temporal muscle haematoma as a cause of suboptimal haemicraniectomy: case report.

OBJECTIVE: To call attention to an unusual complication of decompressive haemicraniectomy in the treatment of malignant haemispheric infarction. METHOD: We describe a case in which partial decompression occurred despite large craniectomy. Complete decompression followed resection of the temporal muscle. Pertinent literature is briefly reviewed. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 55-year old woman developed massive right middle cerebral artery infarction evolving to cerebral haerniation in 40 hours. Decompressive haemicraniectomy without cortical excision was unable to revert coma and decerebrate posturing
