We described therapeutical aspects for treatment of moderated temporomandibular subluxation of the joint disc, with emphasis about the concepts of reduction and immobilization of traumatology, previous to the functional rehabilitation. We used a technique in 14 patients that were previously diagnosed clinical and radiographically, and within the diagnostic procedures we estimated temporomandibular disturbances as an important factor in pre and post treatment to obtain articular stabilization.

The development of craniofacial structures is complex and involves multiple cellular and molecular interactions. We report a case of congenital camptodactyly in a female who subsequently developed chronic tinnitus and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. This report describes the clinicoradiographic features and surgical management of the facial skeletal manifestations, along with postoperative rehabilitation. Furthermore, a concise review of similar literature raises the question of whether this complex of manifestations represents a new entity or a minimal manifestation of a previously chara

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc, a fibrocartilaginous structure between the mandible and temporal bone, is implicated in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). TMDs symptomatically affect approximately 25% of the population, of which 70% have internal derangement of the disc. Treatments lack efficiency, motivating novel therapies, including tissue-engineering toward TMJ disc regeneration. Recent developments in scaffold-based or scaffold-free approaches, cell sources, and biochemical and mechanical stimulation have resulted in constructs exhibiting native tissue mechanics. Safety and effic

BACKGROUND Anterior reduction disc displacement (ARDD) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can present with pain and clicking of the jaw when chewing. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between articular eminence cortication (AEC) and mandibular condyle cortication (MCC) in 81 patients with ARDD of the TMJ using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS We examined images of 142 patients who applied to the outpatient clinic between 2022 and 2024 for various reasons and whose radiographic records included CBCT and MRI images. Sixty-one patients who did not m

AIMS: To test whether an intensive chewing exercise influences the moment of disc reduction in subjects with or without reports of intermittent locking of the jaw.
METHODS: This experimental study included 15 subjects with a reducing anteriorly displaced disc (ADD) and with symptoms of intermittent locking and 15 subjects with a reducing ADD without such symptoms. The moment of disc reduction (MDR), quantified using mandibular movement recordings, was recorded at baseline, and after maximally 60 minutes of chewing. Thereafter, MDR was recorded again after 20 minutes of rest, and if necessary

The articular eminence angle of 179 temporomandibular joints (TMJ) with anterior disc displacement (ADD) in 179 patients was measured and compared with 200 left and 200 right joints of 400 young adults without TMJ dysfunction. A steeper inclination of the posterior slope of the articular eminence, with a mean difference compared to the control group of 14.5 degrees, was seen in joints with ADD. In the group of 179 joints with ADD of the TMJ, no difference was seen in the mean articular eminence angle between joints with an ADD with reduction, and an ADD without reduction, between conservativel

The directions and limits of mandibular movements are controlled by muscles and nerves, and by biomechanical constraints in the dentition and the temporomandibular joints with their associated ligaments. This paper analyses biomechanical constraints in relation to shape, function, stability and dysfunction of the disc in the joint. It is argued that the dense part of the disc is modelled in response to condylar forces which compress it into the articular eminence thereby thinning its centre and squeezing out a thickened anulus around its rim. Because of a lack of congruence between the two art

Sixteen temporomandibular joints from 15 patients, reported to have disc perforation at arthrography, were studied. Pain from the TMJ region was reported by 11 patients. Clicking was found in 6 joints and crepitation in 6 joints. Nine patients displayed a deviation of the mandible at maximum mouth opening towards the affected side. The muscles of the affected side were tender on palpation more frequently than those on the contralateral side. The disc perforation was located in the posterior attachment in most joints. An anterior disc displacement was found in all joints except one, which exhib

Anterior displacement of the temporomandibular joint disc is associated with a general remodeling of the joint's soft tissues. The anterior part of the posterior attachment becomes fibrotic. The external shape and the internal architecture of the disc change in characteristic ways. The disc appears to overlie more of the lateral pterygoid muscle than is normal. The capsule connecting the anterior band of the disc to the condyle appears to be elongated.

INTRODUCTION: T2 mapping, as a quantitative biochemical MRI-technique that provides information on water and collagen fiber content and composition, was shown to be clinically feasible for the evaluation of healthy temporomandibular joints.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to compare the T2 values of whole discs in patients with and without disc dislocation, to evaluate the possible influence of morphological findings on T2 values and to assess the interrater agreement.
METHODS: Sixty-six patients were included in the study. Three experienced examiners assessed the perceptibility of the

We aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis and evaluate the therapeutic behaviour of patients with an anchored disc phenomenon but a normally positioned disc of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Fourteen patients with internal derangement including closed lock of one TMJ were examined. All had normally positioned discs. Synovial fluid was collected from the TMJ by arthrocentesis. Their symptoms, and the protein concentration in the synovial fluid, were evaluated. Their median duration of illness was 3 months (range 0.5-12), and the median protein concentration was low (343 microg/ml; range 36-791

The aim of this study was to determine whether anterior repositioning splint (ARS) can effectively treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anterior disc displacement with reduction (DDwR) in juvenile Class II patients. This study investigated disc repositioning clinically and through use of MRI with 12-month follow up. Patients with skeletal Class II malocclusions and DDwR diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were treated with ARS. The efficacy of ARS was assessed clinically and by means of MRI before treatment (T0), immediately after bite registration (T1), at the end of treatment (T2),

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases such as osteoarthritis and disc displacement have no permanent treatment options, but lubrication therapies, used in other joints, could be an effective alternative. However, the healthy TMJ contains fibrocartilage, not hyaline cartilage as is found in other joints. As such, the effect of lubrication therapies in the TMJ is unknown. Additionally, only a few studies have characterized the friction coefficient of the healthy TMJ. Like other cartilaginous tissues, the mandibular condyles and discs are subject to changes in friction coefficient due to fluid p

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDwoR) is a common type of temporomandibular joint disorders. Most patients experience limited mouth opening and joint pain at the same time. The standpoint of physical therapy is the function of the joint instead of the displaced disc. The treatment aims to make symptoms disappeared and joint function regained through 3M techniques, including modality, manual and movement. For ADDwoR patients with limited mouth opening within 2 month, manual therapy may reposition disc and the following splint and movement therapy ca

PURPOSE: Disc perforation (DP) is one of the most important pathologic signs of intracapsular temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease; however, few clinical studies have focused on the arthroscopic management of this feature. The purpose of the present study was to assess whether operative arthroscopy with abrasion of the perforation borders is effective for the treatment of this alteration of the internal derangement of the TMJ.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients (39 joints) who underwent TMJ arthroscopy under general anesthesia and presented with DP (Wilkes stages IV and V) from 1994 t

The articular disc plays an important role as a stress absorber in joint movement, resulting in stress reduction and redistribution in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The flow of synovial fluid in the TMJ may follow a regular pattern during movement of the jaw. We hypothesised that the regular pattern is disrupted when the TMJ disc is perforated. By computed tomography arthrography, we studied the upper TMJ compartment in patients with small disc perforation during jaw opening-closing at positions from 0 to 3 cm. Finite element fluid dynamic modelling was accomplished to analyse the pattern

Disc perforation represents an advanced stage of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement and is traditionally managed with disc repair techniques or open discectomy when the disc is non-repairable. Although arthroscopic approaches are widely used for minimally invasive management of TMJ disorders, reproducible techniques for arthroscopic disc removal remain limited. This technical note describes the feasibility of a two-portal arthroscopic subtotal meniscectomy for non-repairable TMJ disc perforation. The procedure is performed using a standard posterolateral viewing portal and a si
