This article, jointly authored by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a psychiatrist, presents two case studies of conjoint treatment of the temporomandibular joint pain dysfunction syndrome. The authors present a short review from the literature that supports the multifactorial etiology of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and provide, in two case studies, a combination of conservative dental treatment and hypnotherapy. The two case studies show a successful resolution of temporomandibular joint dysfunction with hypnosis in one case and failure of hypnotherapy to relieve the pain in a sec

In a group of patients with pain syndrome associated with the dysfunction of temporomandibular joint positive results of combined therapy and rehabilitative treatment including remedial gymnastics persisted significantly longer than in controls (p < 0.01). Results of long-term follow-up confirmed the desirability of rehabilitation based on therapeutic exercises. This approach permits to enhance the effectiveness of therapy and rehabilitation of patients with pain syndrome associated with the dysfunction of temporomandibular joint, reduce the number of the patients' visits for repeated treatmen

Among 500 CT scan of temporomandibular joint (TMJ), examined since 1982 by bilateral direct sagittal method (Department of Radiology, Pr. A. Treheux, C.H.U. Nancy-Brabois), the authors have retained 14 cases of patients with symptoms related to TMJ's dysfunction cured by surgery (Department of Maxillo Facial Surgery, Pr. Stricker, C.H.U. Nancy). These cases were chosen among a hundred of patients annually examined by CT scan, for various diseases (TMJ's dysfunctions, traumatisms, infections, inflammatory diseases...) These correlations between radiology and surgery about 26 TMJ (2 patients und

Forty-five patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and otalgia together with other aural symptoms (deafness, tinnitus, pressure/blockage and vertigo) were evaluated clinically and audiometrically. The theoretical mechanisms by which aural symptoms may be produced as a result of temporomandibular joint dysfunction are outlined and discussed in the light of the patients under review. The wide diversity in the incidence of additional aural symptoms apart from otalgia reported in the literature is noted, together with the general lack of full objective audiometric assessment. In 37 pati

Seventeen patients were asked to make a subjective evaluation of their condition after having had a mandibular condylectomy performed. Fourteen of seventeen felt that the surgical procedure had cured their symptoms of pain and limitation of motion. Surgical procedures on the temporomandibular joint are valid when there is organic disease of the temporomandibular joint. However, care must be taken to differentiate between organic disease and the so-called myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome, since surgery is considered inappropriate for the myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome. Even in cases o

The results of treatment of 67 patients with septo-maxillary syndrome and associated temporomandibular joint dysfunction are reported. Five case histories are described in detail. The features of the syndrome emphasized are the maxillo-septal facies, ipsilateral deficiency of facial mesenchyme (mesectoderm) and condylar displacement. Associated with condylar displacement was early osteo-arthritis of the temporomandibular joint complex. It is suggested that Costen's syndrome needs restatement.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a complicated problem requiring interdisciplinary cooperation for diagnosis and treatment. Functional problems including bruxism and psychological disorders frequently occur with joint dysfunction making evaluation more difficult. Many new diagnostic modalities are now available to supplement the history and physical examination to provide an accurate assessment of the joint. Although conservative treatment is successful in a majority of the patients, some form of surgical treatment remains the only option for those who do not respond to conservative mana

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a prominent reason for visits to medical providers. The presentation of headaches within this population remains a challenging diagnosis, given the prevalence and overlap of symptomatology of both conditions. The literature demonstrates an undeniable association between headaches and TMD. Regardless of causality and etiology, the literature supports that prompt diagnosis and treatment results in improvement or resolution of symptoms, including headaches. Treatment of TMD headaches should begin with conservative measures, including medical management with

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) represents a multifactorial disorder that extends beyond the articular complex to include neuromuscular, postural, and psychosomatic dimensions. This literature review analyzes the integration of osteopathic medicine into the multidisciplinary management of TMJD. The study explores five osteopathic models-biomechanical, neurological, metabolic-energetic, respiratory-circulatory, and behavioral-psychosocial-emphasizing their clinical significance for functional rehabilitation within the cranio-cervico-mandibular system. Evidence suggests that osteopath

UNLABELLED: Etiologic and pathogenetic aspects cause the most contentious issue in the study of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome in childhood and adolescence. Some researchers have linked the emergence of this group of diseases with abnormal occlusion, others have more emphasis on the age characteristics of a growing organism, or rather on a number of morphological and psychomotor processes arising and ending at puberty and cause physiological abnormalities in the growing organism. The aim of the study was to improve the method of complex treatment of TMJ dysfunction in adolescence by ex
