Tibialis anterior tendon entrapment after ankle tightrope insertion for acute syndesmosis injury.

Ankle syndesmotic injuries often require anatomic reduction and fixation. Syndesmosis screw fixation is commonly used; however, this prevents physiological motion at the joint, often requires a second operation for screw removal, and may limit postoperative weight bearing. The Ankle Tightrope (Arthrex, Naples, FL) was introduced to allow physiological tibiofibular micromotion, early ankle range of motion, and weight bearing, and did not require a second operation for removal. For Maisonneuve injuries, or more severe syndesmosis instability, a second tightrope is required. This is advised to be

Anatomical considerations of posterior tibialis tendon entrapment in irreducible lateral subtalar dislocation.

Irreducible lateral subtalar dislocation is associated with posterior tibialis tendon entrapment. Mulroy and Leitner have proposed conflicting theories regarding the exact mechanism of tendon entrapment. Cadaveric analysis of lateral subtalar dislocation supported Leitner's contention that tearing of the flexor retinaculum promotes posterior tibialis tendon entrapment. Retinacular disruption allowed tendon subluxation over the medial malleolus and talar head to the entrapped position. Entrapment of the flexor digitorum longus only occurred in the Leitner model. When the flexor retinaculum and

Complex dorsal metacarpophalangeal joint dislocation caused by interosseous tendon entrapment: case report.

We report a patient with open complex, dorsal metacarpophalangeal joint dislocation of the index finger with interposition of the first dorsal interosseous tendon and the transverse ligament of the palmar aponeurosis. To our knowledge, entrapment of the first dorsal interosseous tendon has not been reported to be the cause of irreducible dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint.

Galeazzi-equivalent fracture in children associated with tendon entrapment--report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: This is a report of 2 consecutive cases of the Galeazzi-equivalent fracture in children. CLINICAL PICTURE: In both cases, the mechanism of injury was falls onto the outstretched hand. Radiographs showed fracture of the radius with separation of the distal ulnar physis. TREATMENT: Initial treatment by closed manipulation failed; hence, open reduction and internal fixation was required. The cause of failure of closed manipulation in both cases was interposition of soft tissue into the ulnar fracture site. OUTCOME: Both cases showed good functional outcome after open reduction an

Index extensor digitorum communis tendon entrapment in a growth plate injury of distal radius.

BACKGROUND: We report a rare case in which an epiphyseal injury of the distal radius caused entrapment and rupture of the index extensor digitorum communis tendon during conservative treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old girl suffered epiphyseal injury of the right distal radius with palmar displacement during playing judo. Closed reduction and application of a short arm cast were performed. 4 weeks after injury, movement of her index finger was limited. Extensor tendons adhesion at the fracture site was suspected. It was found that the index extensor digitorum communis tendon had becom

Irreducible Lisfranc Injury Caused by Tibialis Anterior Tendon Entrapment: Surgical Strategy and Literature Review.

Lisfranc injuries are difficult to treat, particularly when reduction is blocked by soft-tissue interposition. Tibialis anterior tendon entrapment is a rare cause of irreducible Lisfranc dislocation, with only nine cases reported since 1950. We report the tenth case in a 65-year-old woman who sustained a Lisfranc fracture-dislocation after a trampoline accident. Emergency treatment consisted of closed reduction and temporary percutaneous fixation, followed by staged open reduction and internal fixation after soft-tissue swelling subsided. At definitive surgery, the tibialis anterior tendon was

Beyond Nerve Entrapment: A Narrative Review of Muscle-Tendon Pathologies in Deep Gluteal Syndrome.

Deep Gluteal Syndrome (DGS) has traditionally been defined as a clinical entity caused by sciatic nerve (SN) entrapment. However, recent anatomical and imaging studies suggest that muscle- and tendon-origin pathologies-including enthesopathy-may also serve as primary pain generators. This narrative review aims to broaden the current understanding of DGS by integrating muscle and tendon pathologies into its diagnostic and therapeutic framework. The literature was selectively reviewed from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, PEDro, and Web of Science to identify clinically relevant studies

Proximal median nerve entrapment caused by a distal biceps tendon cyst: an ultrasonographic diagnosis.

A 60-yr-old woman reported severe pain in the proximal part of her left forearm. The pain was also radiating toward the median nerve-innervated areas of the arm, especially during elbow flexion. Ultrasonographic imaging showed a well defined ganglion cyst around the distal biceps tendon close to the median nerve. Under ultrasound guidance, the cyst was aspirated and corticosteroid injection was performed. The patient's complaint improved 1 wk after the injection, and she started to flex her elbow without any pain. This case highlights the role of ultrasonography as a useful adjunctive tool not

Irreducible Monteggia Fracture-Dislocation Secondary to an Entrapped Brachialis Tendon: A Case Report.

CASE: A 7-year-old boy sustained a Monteggia fracture-dislocation. Corrective osteotomy of the ulna was performed to restore proper forearm anatomy and achieve radial head reduction. Recurrent radial head instability was noted postoperatively, and magnetic resonance imaging indicated recurrent dislocation of the radial head with, notably, an entrapped brachialis tendon and annular ligament. Open reduction of the elbow was performed. Anatomic reduction of the radiocapitellar joint and full range of motion without instability was achieved. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the f

Deep Flexor Tendon Entrapment in a Diaphyseal Fracture of the Proximal Phalanx - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The proximal phalanx fracture is a common fracture of the hand in pediatric ages. Most of these fractures can be treated conservatively with immobilization. There are only few cases reporting tendon entrapment in literature and most of them refer to epiphyseal fractures with only one case reporting tendon entrapment after diaphyseal fracture. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old boy went to the emergency department after suffering trauma in his right hand caused by a fall. He complained of pain in his second finger of the right hand which was swollen. An imaging study was performed and a

Entrapment of the extensor pollicis longus tendon in a pediatric Smith fracture: A case report.

RATIONALE: Most pediatric distal radius fractures are effectively treated nonoperatively; however, operative intervention is indicated in patients with open and highly unstable fractures, in those with concomitant neurovascular injuries and in patients whom soft tissue interposition between fracture fragments precludes anatomical reduction. Notably, soft tissue interposition between fracture fragments is diagnostically challenging. Surgeons must be mindful of this rare complication for early detection and prompt treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 14-year-old boy presented to the emergency departm

Tendon entrapments and dislocations in ankle and hindfoot fractures: evaluation with multidetector computed tomography.

The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of tendon entrapments and tendon dislocations associated with ankle and hindfoot fractures in patients studied by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). Additionally, we describe particular tendon injuries associated with specific fractures. This was a retrospective review of all individuals with a trauma-protocol CT for suspected ankle and/or hindfoot fractures during a consecutive 41-month time period at a single Level I Trauma Center. Each patient's images were evaluated by two radiologists and an orthopedic surgeon for tendon entrapm

Risk of tendon entrapment under a dorsal bridge plate in a distal radius fracture model.

PURPOSE: To determine the risk of iatrogenic damage to the extensor tendons and sensory nerves under a bridge plate along the second versus third metacarpal. METHODS: Using 6 paired (left-right) cadaver forearms-wrists and via a volar approach, we created a distal radius fracture with metaphyseal comminution. We then applied a dorsal distraction plate to either the second or third metacarpal. We next performed dorsal dissection of the hand and wrist over the zone of injury to determine the position of the plate relative to the extensor tendons and sensory nerves. RESULTS: The bridge plate on

Hallux flexion deformity secondary to entrapment of the flexor hallucis longus tendon after fibular fracture.

This article presents a case of entrapment of the flexor hallucis longus tendon after open reduction and internal fixation of a Weber C ankle fracture resulting in interphalangeal joint contracture of the hallux. Pathology involving other tendons at the foot and ankle associated with ankle fractures is reviewed. Other scenarios of flexor hallucis longus pathology are discussed. Flexor hallucis longus anatomy, as related to distal fibular fractures, is outlined, and a recommendation is made to consider flexor hallucis longus entrapment as a cause of hallux dysfunction after open reduction and i

Posterior tibialis tendon entrapment as a complication of posterior malleolar fractures in complex ankle fractures.

AIMS: Posterior malleolar (PM) fractures are commonly associated with ankle fractures, pilon fractures, and to a lesser extent tibial shaft fractures. The tibialis posterior (TP) tendon entrapment is a rare complication associated with PM fractures. If undiagnosed, TP entrapment is associated with complications, ranging from reduced range of ankle movement to instability and pes planus deformities, which require further surgeries including radical treatments such as arthrodesis. METHODS: The inclusion criteria applied in PubMed, Scopus, and Medline database searches were: all adult studies pu
