Text Messaging to Extend School-Based Suicide Prevention: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the third-leading cause of death among US adolescents aged 10-19 years, and about 10% attempt suicide each year. School-based universal prevention may reduce youth suicidal behavior. Sources of Strength uses a peer leader network diffusion model to promote healthy norms across a school population. A key challenge within schoolwide programs is reaching a large and diverse array of students, especially those less engaged with their peers. Motivated by this challenge, we developed and field-tested Text4Strength-a program of automated text messages targeting help-seeking att

Direct-to-adolescent text messaging for vaccine reminders: What will parents permit?

BACKGROUND: Direct-to-adolescent text messaging may be a consideration for vaccine reminders, including human papilloma virus (HPV), but no studies have explored the minimum age at which parents would allow adolescents to receive a text message. METHODS: We distributed a survey to parents of 10-17 year olds during any office visit in two practice based research networks in South Carolina and Oklahoma. We asked about parental preference for receiving vaccine reminders for their adolescent, whether they would allow the healthcare provider to directly message their adolescent, and if so, what wo

Positive Psychotherapy for Smoking Cessation Enhanced with Text Messaging: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) aim to enhance well-being and have shown promise in improving mental health and augmenting behavioral interventions. Although pilot studies have suggested PPIs may support smoking cessation, no full-scale randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have tested their efficacy in this context. METHOD: In this RCT, 271 adults who smoked > 5 cigarettes per day (55.2% female, mean age = 49.2 (SD = 12.0); average cigarettes per day = 16.9 [SD = 7.0]) were randomized to six sessions of Positive Psychotherapy for Smoking Cessation with text messaging (PPT-

Innovative monitoring of therapeutic adherence in children with persistent asthma through text messaging.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of children with asthma experience uncontrolled symptoms, leading to frequent exacerbations, emergency visits, systemic corticosteroid use, unnecessary antibiotic prescription, and increased mortality risk. Poor treatment adherence is a critical factor hindering asthma control. This study aimed to implement and evaluate therapeutic adherence in children with persistent asthma through a technological solution based on short message service (SMS) reminders sent to patients' mobile phones and receiving their responses to optimize disease management and follow-up. Mobile phone text messaging for medication adherence in secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally, accounting for almost 18 million deaths annually. People with CVDs have a five times greater chance of suffering a recurrent cardiovascular event than people without known CVDs. Although drug interventions have been shown to be cost-effective in reducing the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events, adherence to medication remains suboptimal. As a scalable and cost-effective approach, mobile phone text messaging presents an opportunity to convey health information, deliver electronic reminders, and encourage beh

Development of a text message-based headache diary in adolescents and children.

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend diaries in migraine trials for prospective collection of headache symptoms. Studies in other patient populations suggest higher adherence with electronic diaries instead of pen-and-paper. This study examines the feasibility of a text message-based (texting) diary for children and adolescents with headache. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of data from a study validating a pediatric scale of treatment expectancy. We developed a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant texting diary collecting headache characteristics, med

The impact of emojis on perceived responsiveness and relationship satisfaction in text messaging.

Partner responsiveness is a key predictor of likability and overall relationship quality, yet its role in digital communication remains insufficiently studied. This study examined how the inclusion of emojis in text messages influences perceptions of responsiveness and, subsequently, likability, closeness, and relationship satisfaction. A sample of 260 participants viewed 15 text-based conversations in which they assumed that they received responses from their friends. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (e.g., text-only responses or responses that combined text and em

Can text messages encourage flossing among orthodontic patients?

OBJECTIVES: To assess the extent to which text messages on WhatsApp play a role in patient awareness of the importance of proper oral hygiene and flossing on a daily basis and to test the null hypothesis that daily text messages do not influence the flossing habits of orthodontics patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliances with a mean age of 14.3 years participated in the study. Patients (male and female) were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 22): group 1, text messages sent via WhatsApp daily during the study period, and group 2 (control), n

Use of text message abbreviations and literacy skills in children with dyslexia.

This small-scale study compared 10 to 13-year-old dyslexic children's use of text message abbreviations with that of reading age- and chronological age-matched controls. There were no significant differences in the proportion of textisms used between the dyslexic children and the two control groups, although a preference for non-phonetic text abbreviations was observed in the dyslexic group. Unlike the controls, there was little evidence of an association between phonological awareness and textism use in children with dyslexia. These results are discussed in relation to strategy use by dyslexi

Clinician-Patient Asynchronous Text Messaging Communication in Hospital-at-Home Care: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-at-home (HaH) care models are increasingly being adopted as a strategy to treat older adults with acute care needs and reduce strain on health care systems. Technological innovations, particularly digital communication platforms, have become essential in enabling care delivery beyond traditional hospital settings. Among these, asynchronous messaging tools have the potential to facilitate safe, timely, and coordinated interactions between health care providers, patients, and caregivers. Despite growing interest, little is known about how the content and relational dynamics

Aftercare intervention through text messaging in the treatment of bulimia nervosa--feasibility pilot.

OBJECTIVE: Even with the best available treatment, most bulimia nervosa (BN) sufferers are not symptom free at the end of therapy and, for those who have achieved remission, risk of relapse is high. Thus, there is a need for aftercare or relapse prevention interventions after therapy. It is not yet known what type of intervention should be delivered, and how to suit patient needs while being mindful of cost and time constraints of service providers. This pilot study was conducted to explore the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a text messaging (short messaging service [SMS])-based i
