Textile dye dermatitis.

The literature concerning textile dye dermatitis published during the last decade was reviewed. Sixty-one cases of dye-allergic contact dermatitis in which the presentation or course of the dermatitis was unusual or the dye allergen was one not previously reported have been described. The four new dye allergens discovered were Disperse Blue 106, Disperse Blue 85, Disperse Brown 1, and Basic Red 46. The incidence of dye dermatitis varied from 1% to 15.9% depending on the country, patient sample, and number of dyes in the patch test series. The 10 new dye allergens discovered in these studies we

Hypothyroidism in textile workers.

Four cases of overt hypothyroidism, three of whom were men in their early forties, had occurred over a period of 6 years at a textile factory where thiourea and resorcinol were used in the finishing departments. A follow-up survey of 189 men and 48 women (44 per cent of employees) revealed 12 new cases of varying grades of hypothyroidism, categorized after the system proposed by Evered. These included a case of mild hypothyroidism in a male worker, who subsequently received thyroid hormone replacement therapy as a hospital out-patient. A full occupational hygiene survey was carried out to dete

Atomic-Precision Heterojunction Textiles Enable Sunlight-Powered Self-Disinfection.

Cotton fabrics are prone to harboring pathogenic microorganisms due to their microporous structure, leading to material degradation and potential health hazards. While conventional sterilization methods in medical systems such as autoclaving, UV irradiation, and chemical disinfectants are constrained by equipment reliance, restricted applicability, and possible hazards, this study introduces a sunlight-driven antibacterial solution. By constructing a pg-C3N4/ZnO heterojunction photosensitizer on the fabric surface, a Schottky barrier was created at the interfaces of ZnO and pg-C3N4, which enha

Discovering giant magnetoelasticity in soft matter for electronic textiles.

We discovered a giant magnetoelasticity in soft matter with up to 5-fold enhancement of magnetomechanical coupling factors compared to that of rigid metal alloys without an externally applied magnetic field. A wavy chain analytical model based on the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and demagnetizing field was established, fitting well to the experimental observation. To explore its potentials in electronic textiles, we coupled it with magnetic induction to invent a textile magnetoelastic generator (MEG), a new working mechanism for biomechanical energy conversion, featuring an intrinsic wat

Silver-coated textiles in hidradenitis suppurativa: A case report.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic and debilitating skin disease of apocrine gland-bearing areas. The mainstay of treatment usually includes topical and systemic antibiotics. These agents can be used as monotherapy or combination therapy. The therapeutic role of functional textiles with antimicrobial activity has been recently emerging in the treatment of other skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and epidermolysis bullosa. The pathologic processes involved in the development of atopic dermatitis and hidradenitis suppurativa are still incompletely understood, but these two diseases share

Aqueous Zinc Compounds as Residual Antimicrobial Agents for Textiles.

Textiles, especially those worn by patients and medical professionals, serve as vectors for proliferating pathogens. Upstream manufacturing techniques and end-user practices, such as transition-metal embedment in textile fibers or alcohol-based disinfectants, can mitigate pathogen growth, but both techniques have their shortcomings. Fiber embedment requires complete replacement of all fabrics in a facility, and the effects of embedded nanoparticles on human health remain unknown. Alcohol-based, end-user disinfectants are short-lived because they quickly volatilize. In this work, common zinc sa

Textiles and human skin, microclimate, cutaneous reactions: an overview.

This article overviews research in the interdisciplinary area of textile/skin interaction and related cutaneous intolerance. Microclimate in the skin/clothing system and especially the skin responses relates to the moisture and heat transfer within this system and plays a critical role in skin irritation from textiles. A discussion is then given on skin irritation reactions to textiles, including intolerance caused by chemicals (dyes and finishes) and physical contact/friction. Finally, two skin injuries, blisters and pressure ulcers, which are caused by physical contact, pressure, and frictio

Hygienic relevance and risk assessment of antimicrobial-impregnated textiles.

The antimicrobial impregnation of textiles is intended to provide protection of textiles against microbial corrosion, prevention of malodor or prophylaxis and therapy of infections, respectively. For every biocidal product a careful risk assessment for humans and the environment has to be performed. The advantage of antimicrobially active textiles has to be documented for every agent as well as for every application, and a balance has to be found between a textile's quality rating and the potential risks, e.g. sensitization, disturbance of the ecology of the skin, toxic side effects by means o

Enhanced bactericidal performance of textiles through compound antimicrobial agents.

This study aims to explore the essential functional requirements associated with controlling the proliferation of microbes in the domain of textiles used in public health areas. Herein, three antimicrobial agents, specifically iodopropylbutylcarbamate (IPBC), 1-hydroxypyridine-2-thioketone zinc (ZPT), and 2-octyl-3-isothiazolinone (OIT), were chosen for fabric finishing based on their notable effectiveness, minimal toxicity, cost-efficiency, and chemical stability. Therapeutic textiles: A promising approach for human skin dysbiosis?

The close interaction between skin and clothing has become an attractive cornerstone for the development of therapeutic textiles able to alleviate skin disorders, namely those correlated to microbiota dysregulation. Skin microbiota imbalance is known in several skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, acne and hidradenitis suppurative (HS). Such microbiota dysregulation is usually correlated with inflammation, discomfort and pruritus. Although conventional treatments, that is, the administration of steroids and antibiotics, have shown some eff

Highly stable, antiviral, antibacterial cotton textiles via molecular engineering.

Cotton textiles are ubiquitous in daily life and are also one of the primary mediums for transmitting viruses and bacteria. Conventional approaches to fabricating antiviral and antibacterial textiles generally load functional additives onto the surface of the fabric and/or their microfibres. However, such modifications are susceptible to deterioration after long-term use due to leaching of the additives. Here we show a different method to impregnate copper ions into the cellulose matrix to form a copper ion-textile (Cu-IT), in which the copper ions strongly coordinate with the oxygen-containin

Contact allergy from disperse dyes in textiles: a review.

Several disperse dyes (DDs) are still considered to be the most important allergens in textile dermatitis, but there are sparse data about their current use in textiles. The aim of this review was to evaluate published studies and reports on contact allergy to DDs published in PubMed during the last 22 years (1990-2012). Prevalence data are provided by study and by dye, as well as by the described clinical peculiarities of DD dermatitis. We reviewed 54 studies. In total, 26 DDs were tested. The average prevalence in screening studies was >1% for Disperse Blue 106, Disperse Blue 124, and Disper

Silver-coated textiles in the therapy of atopic eczema.

Atopic skin is mainly determined by a disrupted skin barrier, resulting in a higher susceptibility to external irritants in affected and nonaffected skin. Apart from many other irritant and allergic influences, skin colonization with Staphylococcus aureus is one of the major factors triggering and maintaining atopic eczema (AE). Adequate textile protection with low irritant potential can be helpful in reducing the exposure to exogenous trigger factors. Until now, cotton fabrics have been the state of the art of recommended textiles for patients with AE. The combination of antimicrobial therapy

Microstructured Reflective Coatings on Commodity Textiles for Passive Personal Cooling.

As the effects of climate change become more severe and widespread, maintaining personal thermal homeostasis becomes necessary for survival. In principle, advanced textiles and garments have the ability to leverage light absorption, transmission and/or reflection, in addition to straightforward convection, to heat or cool bodies in extreme temperature conditions. For cooling, in particular, surfaces adept at selectively reflecting or refracting high-energy incident light (200 nm-2.5 mm) from the sun while transmitting or emitting infrared light (8-13 mm) from radiant body heat boast the abilit

Characterization of silver release from commercially available functional (nano)textiles.

Silver, both in the nano as well as in other forms, is used in many applications including antimicrobial textiles. Washing of such textiles has already been identified as an important process that results in the release of silver into wastewater. This study thus investigated the release of silver from eight different commercially available silver-textiles during a washing and rinsing cycle. The silver released was size-fractionated and characterized using electron microscopy. In addition, the antimicrobial functionality of the textiles was tested before and after washing. Three of the textiles

Use of textiles in atopic dermatitis: care of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease which usually starts during the first years of life. In the management of AD, the correct approach requires a combination of multiple treatments to identify and eliminate trigger factors, and to improve the alteration of the skin barrier. In this article we try to explain the importance of skin care in the management of AD in relation to the use of textiles: they may be useful to improve disrupted skin but they are also a possible cause of triggering or worsening the lesions. Garments are in direct contact with the skin al
